From John Seach's website:
Volcanic Eruption in Ethiopia
The large eruption in Ethiopia is most likely have originated from fissures between Dalaffilla and Alu volcanoes in the Erta Ale Range. Satellite images contine to show a large amount of lava covering about 300 sq km, and a sulphur dioxide plume extending over the Arabian Peninsula, Pakistan and northern India.

Hard to run that far with a herd of goats, ten kids and an AK-47. Now that's good doom.

Why does this always happen to the poorest?

Maybe because they are the only ones stupid enough to live close to an active volcano

We are about a year into solar cycle 24 and it has been preternaturally quiet. We had hurricanes much deeper into the year last year, one in January of this year, I think????

that eruption sent 100-200 ktonnes of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. that's A LOT

Indeed it is.

I don't imagine this will be pinned much longer, so have a good weekend everyone.

Perhaps, by the way ... what a large stat deviation!

Thanks op for the links, the plumes are quite impressive too, they even reach IndoChina and the Himalayas!

The Eruption has continued at least up to 7th November.

Curious, on 9th november 2008 a large, massive hotspot appeared in the modis detection system over the waters of the south atlantic ocean, off shore Brasil. What is this, how could it be? Is this a failure or is it real?

So the Eruption in Ethiopia is over? Anyone reading?

I saw the thing off Brazil the other day. Very curious, but I've seen no explanation. Yet another reason to take MODIS images with a grain of salt.

As far as the Ethiopian eruption, John Seach says this:
"Dalaffilla Volcano, Ethiopia
Satellite images have shown that the sulphur dioxide plume from the eruption of Dalaffilla volcano in Ethiopia has dissipated over the Pacific, after traveling half way around the world. Some SO2 persists over the northern Indian Ocean, southern India, and Bay of Bengal. Hotspots continue to be recorded on the NW flank of Dalaffilla and up to 6 km NE of the volcano."

I've got no other info, but post it if you find some. hf

This is a really interesting area geologically. Just some cursoury research shows that the Afar Depression is a rift valley formed by the divergence of three plates. This is one of the few areas that are land observable oceanic rifts. It looks like it is essentially creating new seabed on land.

That's my understanding too. Some day those volcanos will be islands in an inland sea.

Hi Op, well as i think you understand about... i would suggest the possibility for the strange phenomena spotted on 9th november being real ocean floor activity from the "Grande dorsal" which happens to be just some tens of kms north of the massive (mostly longitudinal) hotspot. There is an oceanic current that would be drifting hot waters and vapors south, and the pattern in which the allegedly massive hotspots break down seems to correspond to the main features on the sea bed. This seems quite likely, but of course it could be a failure in the system or perhaps other phenomena or an artificial test. Isn´t it... strangely suggestive?

Certainly suggestive, but I don't know what it suggests. LOL

As I understand the MODIS images, it accumulates the marks as the day goes on, so what appears to be a large hotspot may just be a small one moving. Moving fast in this case.

I also think this is approximately the area where Brazil intends to start deep drilling for oil, though I can't imagine why that would cause such a large hotspot, or series of small ones.

And then, there's always the military...

Oh i forget to mention that this region happens to be within the South Atlantic Anomaly, from which i never heard before... it´s a real anomaly in the magnetic field in which it is somewhat weaker/different than in most areas. Really strange indeed.

As i get intrigued on this phenomena i try to found some related evidences or explanations/informations in existence... and so far there seems that nothing happened at all... so if it was ocean floor activity it´s either being uninformed/downplayed or it has been quite gentle/prgressive and not sudden/harsh.

Perhaps modis might be taken with a grain of salt... but

What you think about the coincidences toward these spots?

Yes, a test might be also a likely explanation as there were some navy there following some news...

still it´s seems so large?

Thanks.

I know nothing about the SAA except what I just read here:
[link to en.wikipedia.org]
but it is interesting.

Before someone says "pole shift" I'll quote - Some scientists believe that the anomaly is a side effect of geomagnetic reversal.[citation needed] This may result from a misunderstanding of the extant literature, which mentions a slow weakening of the geomagnetic field as one of several causes for the changes in the borders of the SAA since its discovery. What is true is that as the geomagnetic field continues to weaken, the inner van Allen belt will get closer to the Earth, with a commensurate enlargement of the SAA at given altitudes.

I love a good coincidence, and remind you that one definition of coincidence is that you weren't paying attention to the rest of what is going on.
