I had a cat that used to hang out with the Feral cats in my old hood also. Hunted and all. Never was attacked. It was pretty cool. Everyone else said what I was going to. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. That being said, some people can't afford it. The poster that fussed about feeding it without sterilizing it, you're an ass too. If you want to feed strays, I'd say go for it. Be careful getting too close, even if they are friendly, as cats can carry diseases that are contagious to humans. If you do want to take it in, then take it immediately to the vet to get it checked out. If you ust want to CNR, a medium sized animal trap can be used to humanely catch it to transport it to the vet. Are the cats just strays, or are they feral? |

I fed a feral stray cat for over two years before I finally adopted her. I went down the block twice a day for all that time. It was a whole year before I could even touch her at all. She got so she would let me brush her while she was eating, but it was all on her terms. She needed brushing so badly, she had a lot of severe skin problems. Just after Christmas last year she turned up sick and about broke my heart, so I managed to capture her , I don't think I could have done that before, she was really weak. Ran up a bunch of vet bills, got her cleaned up, she has been inside here for almost a year, and is extremely contented even in my tiny apartment. She basically lives under the daybed and comes out to eat and do what she has to, then goes back under the daybed. But she lies under there and purrs - She won't let me touch her at all and runs under the couch every time I get up and walk across the room. But she finally worked out her problems with her skin and coat, that was a long process, she had a lot of severe itching for a long time, it seems like it's healed. Maybe someday she'll let me pet her! A couple of months ago I felt so sorry for her itching, I thought I'd put my foot down and make her let me brush her, so I withheld food for a couple of days, I offered it too her (salmon!) about five times a day under the conditions that she come right up to me to get it, like she used to when she was outside, but she wasn't having any. I caved after 48 hours. Coaxing wasn't working, she stood her ground. She's come a long way. Oh by the way she doesn't have any teeth. I knew that all along. She was starving to death when I started feeding her, they must have all fallen out when she was starving. I think she's probably been abandoned like ten times. |

It breaks my heart. Serious questions: Do you think stray cats are happier outside? And, should I be feeding them? Empathy f@#king sucks! Oh, I feel for you. EMpathy sucks. I fed a feral. Quoting: mercury2Yes, indeed - clean water is also very important. And if there are many cats drinking out of same bowl - change as often as possible. Also - in winter the water and food freezes rapidly. In the winter and colder times I warm their food - which helps greatly in the cold. This can be done simply by leaving the food out (on counter, etc) a couple hours before feeding. Or place bowl in larger bowl of hot water for a bit before feeding. I don't like using the Microwave for this - for it kills the goodness in the food. Water also is on warmer side for them. |

The last straw that got everybody on board with us (yes, we were the lone assholes that had a problem with the feeding station from the beginning) was the daytime confrontation between one of the neighborhood toddlers and a raccoon. The kid wasn't hurt but everybody finally got together and made her stop. And guess what? No more nocturnal pests. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 536224All this stuff people are saying about how more and more of them show up, that's what happened down the street, now for sure they weren't all strays, a lot were neighbor's well fed cats, but they would come and eat the food I was putting out for the pathetic stray one, and she wouldn't fight for it, so I had to put out more and more food to make sure she would get some, and yes giant raccoons came every night to get the rest. it got really expensive, I totally couldn't afford it at all. I could go on about this long story, how there was another one living in the blackberry bushes that I didn't really know was there til the end, ended up taking him too and finding a place for him with some friends who have a cat rescue. What an awful dilemma though when I took him in sick and knew I for sure couldn't keep him, thank god that got solved, these people I know have 50 cats. He was a nice little guy too, but no way was I taking another on top of her. My life got better when I didn't have to get dressed, put on my shoes, and go down the block on all my days off no matter what, and arrange for her for when I went out of town, and worry worry worry all the time. I washed my hands of that situation down there when I got those two out of it. They cleaned up the thorn bushes too. The neighbors cats can hang out somewhere else. I took care of her down there for two and a half years. |

That's why as hard as it is, you should not be feeding strays. They'll breed like crazy. If there is any other way such as calling animal control, that would be much preferable. At least they can end the suffering of the cat. |

I think it is called Alley Cat Allies! That stops the females from being permanantly pregnant and it stabilises the population. You would be surprised at how much birds and mice etc that they will catch and eat by themselves. Without cats we wolld all be overrun with mice and rats! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 269870If you really want to care, practice what is called CNR: capture, neuter, release. Of course that envolves committment and expense. Easier to throw down that scoop of food and let them breed more misery. This is the best suggestion, OP. Here's an organization that knows all about trap, neuter, return: [link to www.alleycat.org] You might be able to get some neighbors to help work something out with the area vets about starting such a program. At the very least, Alley Cat Allies can send you blueprints to build cat shelters that even your area boy and girl scouts could build so that they'll have a warmer place this winter. The VERY LAST thing you want to do is to take a feral cat to the Humane Society. They are feral and have never been socialized. Therefore - they are un-adoptable - which means they WILL have to be put down. There's a myth that killing neighborhood feral cats will "get rid of the problem", but when cats die, more stray cats join the "pack". By maintaining the colony, you are keeping other strays OUT of the colony. The only way to reduce the population is to trap the colony dwellers, spay and neuter them, and return them TO THE COLONY. This has been proven OVER and OVER again so don't let anyone tell you that killing cats is the answer. Thanks for caring for the babies, OP (all cats are "babies" to Kat Mama, LOL!). Kat Mama User ID: 502623 United States 11/08/2008 12:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have read that it is good to have an few feral cats around because they help to keep the mice and rat population down. Quoting: i is that which i isHowever it is also good to try to capture and spade or neuter as many as possible because they will breed too fast and decimate the bird population which catch insects. Good post, but did you know that it's also been proven that cats keep the bird population healthier? The Audubon Society was on a rampage in the 1990's to kill all feral cats because the felines preyed on birds. Come to find out when studies were done, cats tend to kill the weak and sick birds which made the overall bird population stronger and healthier. If we leave nature alone, it really does tend to keep itself in check. That said, we still need to do trap, neuter return with cats (and yes, there is a way to trap them that is safe so you won't get bitten) - because we humans are the ones causing such an over population of cats. Thousands of cats are simply abandoned by their owners every year and yes, they can turn feral. Thousands of pet cats are NOT spayed and neutered and they go outside and breed. I don't care what anyone says about it not "being natural" to get a cat "fixed", it is wrong to NOT do so. Even if you could guarantee your cat never got outside to breed, it is horribly inhumane to stop your cat from doing what comes natural. And cats who are NOT fixed have a higher incidence of developing cancer. Alley Cat Allies is a GREAT place for wonderful education on anything about cats.
