It was one of hundreds of bills expected to be filed today, the initial day that lawmakers can file proposed legislation for the 2009 session, which begins Jan. 13.
Sen. Juan "Chuy'' Hinojosa, D-McAllen, filed Senate Bill 105, which also would limit future increases after the two-year moratorium to the inflation rate, measured by the Consumer Price Index. Additionally, it would require fees not specifically allowed by law to be imposed only if approved by a majority of students.
Tuition and fees at public, four-year universities have increased 53 percent since lawmakers deregulated tuition in 2003, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. |
