let me get this straight they want to spend US taxpayer money to bail out gm, then re-sell the cars they make with taxpayer money back to the tax payer? all while they spend 100's of millions on nascar? so in reality we have a nascar tax. so shouldnt the races at least be free admission?

Probably as the NASCAR contracts/sponsorships are multi-year in nature.

Wouldn't be surprised to see these ad dollars disappear in the future

LAS VEGAS — General Motors is sponsoring an 11-acre test-driving wonderland in a parking lot of the Sahara Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

The words "drag" and "strip" may be frequently used in the racy lounges of Las Vegas, but generally they have different meanings. For General Motors, the words are combined in the sense of a test track for amateurs to play with cars.

The Sahara Hotel and Casino, under General Motors sponsorship, is transforming an 11-acre parking lot into a pair of test tracks — one off-road, one paved — that will be open to the public. The attraction, to be called "The Drive," will open this spring for a six-month trial period. GM's sponsorship will extend to the Las Vegas monorail's Sahara stop.

Contracts, the penalty for not completing them maybe higher than the cost of just completing them

I had read that manufacturer support was being cut for the lower NASCAR leagues so they already cutting back where they can.

General Motors will become the exclusive automotive sponsor of the new 24-hour Planet Green television network, which debuts in 50 million homes on June 4, and GM will sponsor the series “Greensburg”, documenting the rebuilding of Greensburg, KS as a model “green” city after being destroyed by tornado in May 2007. GM will donate several E85 cars and SUVs as part of its sponsorship, to community foundations and the city of Greensburg itself.

In addition to its flex-fuel technology, which GM says will be available in half its models by 2012, the company has completed a demonstration vehicle that uses HCCI — Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition — a diesel-like compression technology in a gasoline engine. The hybrid technology, which switches between ignition and compression, promises to increase gasoline fuel efficiency by at least 15 percent because of the higher efficiency of compression.
