Product Rating: Pros: Name recognition is international; opportunities afterwards are extensive. Cons: professors are too busy making great names for themselves to have much time for students The Bottom Line: If you want sheer prestige, Harvard is hard to beat. If you want a quality education where they care about their students, forget it! If you want something besides a name on your degree, don't go to Harvard Law. It's grossly over-rated as far as its substantive educational quality. You Call this Education?! I have consistently heard from alumni that a good number of the professors don't teach well, don't care about students and are hardly available. Finding a true mentor at Harvard Law would be quite a feat. Prof. Harold Berman (who recently went Emeritus I think) and Prof. Mary Anne Glendon, I think, are notable positive exceptions to certain undesirable norms at Harvard Law. Just in case you're wondering, I know a bunch of Harvard Law alumni although (as I say again below) did not apply there myself. A number of attorneys at Ross & Hardies (where I have a position: www.rosshardies.com) graduated from Harvard Law. In fact, several Harvard Law graduates literally have offices along the same hallway here on the 25th floor of Ross & Hardies. (hmmm...maybe I shouldn't be so candid about what I say here :-)) Many professors at Northwestern (my law school alma mater) got their degrees there. Some alumni from Wheaton College (IL) (where I received graduate and undergraduate degrees) went to Harvard Law (and the ones that I know of did very well)...and this is just a start of the Harvard Law alums that I know. The critiques are not to deny that the professors (and alumni) aren't famous for their scholarship, consulting, media/government involvements, etc. In fact, many on the Harvard faculty are among the most well-known in the legal academy. For examples, Prof. Alan Dershowitz or Prof. Lawrence Tribe might actually be recognized by someone outside of the legal realm. Dershowitz was involved in the O.J. Simpson trial (for instance) and Tribe argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore. Yet one doesn't need to pay Harvard tuition to hear them on C-SPAN or read their books. Given their travel schedules alone (not to mention everything else that crams their calendars), how much time do you think they actually spend in mentoring students?! And who's tuition is going into paying their salary?! At the same time, they make more in consulting and other outside activities at times--so it's hardly surprising that so much of their time, effort, etc. is invested NOT in students. Course Selection The course selection at Harvard Law is extensive. It's a huge buffet with a mind-boggling array of options. So if you want a wide array of courses, you'll find it at Harvard. How well these courses are run/taught is quite a different question though. Note as well that many courses have an ideological bent to them. Political correctness is alive and well at Harvard. Pro-life views for example, according to a recent article in a Boston newspaper, are not tolerated. Anti-life, which is the result if not the intent (sadly enough) is in vogue. Huge Harvard Law has the 2nd biggest student body after Georgetown. So get ready for more fellow students in your class than some schools have in the entire school. Big student bodies lead to big alumni networks. Yet big alumni networks can sometimes be less meaningful, shallower and more superficial. Harvard Law alumni have complained along these lines. With Harvard's tuition, also expect your debt load to be huge...that is, unless your parents, previous saved income, etc. are paying for it up front. HLS is definitely not cheap. Heritage/History It was Harvard's Dean Langdell that lead the popular surge of Socratic teaching in law schools. For this, his memory is either appreciated or abhorred. Many a squirming, diffident law student have suffered something approaching "intentional infliction of emotional distress" at the hands of a Socratic ogre. The well-known movie "The Paper Chase" depicts this happening at Harvard Law in popular narrative. Harvard Law has spawned numerous leaders of society. The list is long and Dean Joel Seligman (of Washington University Law in St. Louis) wrote a book on this topic. Managing partners of mongo law firms, other law school deans and professors galore, judges from Supreme Court Justices on down, etc. have come from this revered institution. Of course the question of whether these leaders have lead well or not is another question. The answer depends on which "leader" one is referring to. Also, how much Harvard Law had to do with their character formation will likely meet a dubious response at best. (Robert Coles' classes, from what I understand, are a notable exception) You see, Harvard Law used to actually care more about their students. In the past, they must had done some things educationally quite well. Previously, moral/character education was a somewhat more tangible element at HLS. There were ethical moorings that grounded the school more. Now, Harvard sits fat and fierce on top of what used to be an admirable institution of education. Harvard thinks it can get away with inadequate education for its students because it has the largest endowment among American universities and a legendary reputation. It has become too intoxicated with its own aggrandizement while too negligent towards its students. This is why the Princeton Review/National Jurist rankings of law schools has frequently ranked Harvard dead last (including 3 consecutive years) among nationally accredited ABA law schools. The Harvard Dean called them and said that their ranking must be a mistake. Princeton Review calmly told them that the statistics just came out that way. This study looked at things like teaching quality, quality of life for students and other important factors. It merely corroborates many of the assertions here. Yet at the same time, I give credit that the Veritas Forum (www.veritas.org) started at Harvard Law before it has mushroomed all over North America--and is spreading internationally. Peter Jennings of ABC News called the Veritas Forum one of the most important conversations going on in universities. PR Harvard University is very conscious of its image and wants to maintain it. They are very into public relations, publicity and whatever else necessary to maintain and burnish their magnificent reputation. When considering which law schools to apply to, I received their beautiful, glossy materials. The glorious pictures of Cambridge, Massachusetts in the fall were resplendent. Their self-descriptions were very attractive indeed. Nonetheless, I didn't join the huge herds of people who crawl over each other to apply. I had heard too much from students and alumni about the reality of the educational quality there. As the Pre-Law Director at my undergraduate/graduate institution told me, Harvard uses "smoke and mirrors" to maintain/increase its gargantuan reputation notwithstanding its sub-par substantive education. Conclusion Harvard Law School is a name that turns heads and opens doors. It still attracts a very selective cut of students. Yet I humbly hold that it has lost many of the past glories in its actual, substantive education of students. For this important reason, I cannot recommend it on the sheer merits of the education one commonly receives there. So perhaps this Epinion is one stroke at cracking the Crimson idol in people's minds. Recommended: No hmmmmm.... just sayin' |

If I want to criticize a president for being just another corporate lackey then I'll do so. I would feel a lot better about Obama if he had some real people behind him instead of all the same goddamned snakes that have run the last five presidents. Hell I'd prefer seeing Louis Farrakhan, Al Sharpton, Ice Tee, and Jesse Jackson as advisers rather than all the rich old white assholes. At least then maybe we would see some kind of change, for better or worse. |
