Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack’s name has been tossed around for a week as a potential Cabinet appointee in the new Obama administration, but now a Washington, D.C., publication says he’s the “frontrunner” to be agriculture secretary.

Congressional Quarterly reported Tuesday that Vilsack “has emerged as the frontrunner” for the post. It cited congressional aides, interest groups and people close to the transition.

Congressional aides said Wednesday they have heard the talk that Vilsack is in the running. But none could gauge his chances.

The Obama transition office declined to comment Wednesday. And Matt Paul, Vilsack’s former spokesman, said Wednesday “this is all speculation.”

Talk about potential Cabinet appointments has run rampant since Obama’s election last week, much of it citing anonymous sources — or other media reports.

Vilsack, who launched his own brief bid for the presidency in 2007, backed Hillary Clinton before the Iowa caucuses. After, however, he campaigned for Obama in the general election.

He is now a resident fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics. Vilsack couldn’t be reached Wednesday.

Others mentioned as possible appointees are Tom Buis, the president of the National Farmers Union, and former Rep. Charles Stenholm of Texas.

If Vilsack were to be picked, he would be the first Iowan to be appointed agriculture secretary since Henry Wallace in the 1930s.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, said Vilsack would be an excellent choice.

“Gov. Vilsack has a strong record in Iowa on building opportunities in agriculture, renewable energy and conservation,” spokeswoman Kate Cyrul said. “Sen. Harkin has been a supporter from the time Tom Vilsack ran for governor to the time he ran for president and believes he would be a strong secretary of agriculture.”

Harkin chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee.

I was just thinking about absolute evil and Monsanto came to mind. Because the terminator seed (seed that grow plants that cannot reproduce) are the work of the devil and Monsanto is what evil is all about.
