For a large sum of money? I did today. It's not a scam either.

I've been researching the check all night and am finding out it's totally legit. For a big ass sum of money.

I'm seriously debating to myself to just cash this in tomorrow morning right away.

Oh ya it was sent to me Fed EX Express Priority overnight. So whoever sent it to me in my name signed and everything had to fork out at least 30$ for mailing it...

if you cash it make sure not to spend it for at least a week to see if it clears, otherwise you will owe it back to the bank if it bounces...also, you will get fees too.

No No No Scam works as such.. you go cash check..check bounces weeks later and your out the money.. usually invloves paying for something on sending something back though. Go to craigslist and look at fAQ about scams it will sound familiar. I was selling an item on craigslist for 1500 dollars and guy sent a check and everything via fed ex priiroty etc., emailed sounded was going to pay fo shipping all sounded legit. ended up check was fake as crap. I of course did not attempt to cash it. Do this.. take it to a bank and DO NOT CASH but see if they can verify the funds. Usually only the bank it is drawn on can do this. i.e. name of bank on check. If it sounds like some BS bank you can bet check is BS..

Take it to the bank, they'll check it out and confirm it's real. If it is deposit it. And leave it there for a while in case it was an accident. Earn interest on it, if nothing happens over the next 12 mths, I guess it's yours.

It takes 21 business days for a check to clear. That is what our credit union told me the last time I deposited a personal check for payment of eBay items.

In small detail, the check is from Wachovia from a software company that I've never heard of, but they do have a legit website/corp. on the west coast.

Yes, I had one Fed Ex'ed for $4800. Contacted FBI and was told it wasn't worth the paper it was printed on.

You can contact your local FBI office for advice. They were very helpful to me and know about this all too common scam.

True!...I got some of this money and took it to the US Postal Service who showed how they were fake. Took them to FBI and they are the one's who said go the Postal Service since they were sent that way and they'd do the investigation. The scam works like the person above says. They get their money and you get holding the bill. You most likely are to send most of it back to them and keep 10% but you will really pay for all of it in due time, assuming you do cash the money orders, but don't tell anyone what you are doing is their final request.

Hey Priority,

I know this situation happened a while back, but can you tell me what happened? Did you end up cashing it? Was it a scam?

I just received a check today, fed-ex priority overnight. The bank is legit and so is the University it was sent from. I did notice that the sender's return address was Texas, but the tracking number showed it was shipped from California. Anyway - that's a lot of info. I was hoping you could tell me what happened with your situation.

Thanks!

1- call them

or

2 - Cash it and leave in the bank for a month.

I agree. The part that gets me is the cost of the fedex that they were willing to pay. Perhaps they are willing to pay the cost because it will look more legit than an email, however what is their gain? In other words say you deposit the check, start spending the money, and it bounces. What did the sender gain. Perhaps I am being slow today.

Re: Anybody ever have a random check sent Fed ex to you?
First of all, if you cash a check that is not honored, YOU get charged a fee by your bank. So don't cash these checks, without first having your bank verify that the funds are there.
Second, the scammer is using a stolen FedEx account to ship out these bad checks.
We haven't figured out how the scammer is benifiting yet from this, but wonder if they have a link into the banking system to get the account number of the person who has cashed the check.

We own a vacation rental. I was contacted via email with request to book for a honeymoon. Then it got weird. Via email the person requesting said their employer was paying for the honeymoon as a gift. We require a security deposit of $200. They said they would have their employer make the check out to me for the full amount of their honeymoon "gift" and would I please cash the check, and return the remainder minus the deposit and cost for a week?
I never said yes or no... but a check for 4,800 dollars arrived via fed ex with the check and a printed slip of paper with the address I was to return the balance to...

knew it was bogus the moment I saw it but I checked with the bank just to verify and they said throw it away... and that it was a shame that there is no one to report this kind of thing to because it "happens all the time"

It's a scam.
Throw it away.

Now the scammers have your bank account number from the returned check so they can wire all the money out of your account.

The check will be accepted by your bank, you will send them money and it will be bounced by the bank in 1 week-10 days. Happened a lot in my industry.

YES!! You are passing a counterfeit check. Mine is a "work from home" scam. Got the same FED-EX package today and an email telling me to cash the check keep $300 and send the rest to an address in the UK. I don't think so!!

You guys are getting your scams confused!
In OPs case, and any identical scenarios, take the check to the bank on which it was written-not YOUR bank!
If Wachovia cashes it, I would have to assume that it is legit.
You could always try to find-out why they sent you the check.
There could be a good reason, and you may not even want to cash it if it means that you are giving-up rights to sue or something.

I was in an accident one time and I forgot all about it. Right before Christmas, an insurance company sent me a check for $250. but said that if I cashed it, I would not be allowed to sue for the accident.

and sent it to my bank, it was counterfeit!! I

Something similar happened to a friend of mine.
Couple days later he got a call from a out of area number
telling him how he is to earn that money. Lets say it was less then legal. He consulted a professional and discarded the check.

Well, by postal mail, not FedEx and about 20 years ago...

I received an unexpected check for $225,000. It was made out correctly (name, address, etc) but it should have been sent to someone else (in another state as I eventually tracked down.)

It took two weeks of calling the source to get things straightened out. No one wanted to admit that he or she had screwed up.
