You guys are getting your scams confused!
In OPs case, and any identical scenarios, take the check to the bank on which it was written-not YOUR bank!
If Wachovia cashes it, I would have to assume that it is legit.
You could always try to find-out why they sent you the check.
There could be a good reason, and you may not even want to cash it if it means that you are giving-up rights to sue or something.

I was in an accident one time and I forgot all about it. Right before Christmas, an insurance company sent me a check for $250. but said that if I cashed it, I would not be allowed to sue for the accident.
