Is sexual repression a serious problem?
I once heard a college professor say that, "most of the problems in the world are caused by sexual repression."

I'm not quite sure whether he was joking or being serious but do you guys think sexual repression is a serious problem? Can it really drive people mad?

Here's some quotes from a good article I read:

Some of the side effects of sexual repression as observed in human beings include lack of self-confidence, low self-esteem, depression, suicidal tendencies, and higher aggressive behavior. A child who has been taught to believe that sex is dirty and bad will often mature to become an adult who is self-conscious about his body and overwhelmed with guilt when the natural desire to breed arouses him. Adults who are restricted in their sexual inclinations will often experience frustration that can result in either suicidal actions or violence towards others.

It should come as a surprise to no one that societies that have more relaxed legislature over sexual matters enjoy a lower violent crime rate and are not often seen butting heads with other societies on the war field. This phenomenon was best documented in a study of one of our closest relatives, the Bonobo ape.

Bonobos, closely related to chimpanzees and also sharing more than 98 percent of the human genetic profile, are a species of primate which uses sexual activity not only for reproduction but also for social bonding. Bonobos have been observed to be indiscriminate in their sexual relations in regards to age or gender, and also are considered to be one of the more peaceful groupings of animals on the planet. Unlike chimpanzees and other animals that have a dominant-male or a strictly monogamous structure, the Bonobos are not often observed being aggressive towards one another over food, mates, or territory.

Death threats from christian conservatives? I feel for you.
I once dated a girl in high school who's dad was a pastor. He made her go to bible camp every summer. Eventually she stopped seeing me because her dad found condoms ("contraband") in her bedroom.

From my own experience, hardcore christians are some of the most closedminded and irrational people on this planet. Not much different from the radical muslim terrorists overseas.

I agree with all the symptoms of depression etc. R/T the inability to find a beautiful women to make passionate love to.it has been over a year for me, and I tell you! It is quite a humbling experiance. It truly effects you mentally, physically, and emotionally. I believe I am an attractive man. But I just seem to have this black cloud over me. Although it does not help when I have no social outlet and all I do is work and lay low. I really wish I could find a "companion" to interact with. But that's for another thread.

I feel the same way man! I been a loner most of my life and I have social anxiety disorder so it sucks bad for me. I plan on seeing a therapist soon, so hopefully I can change myself for the btter.

About the sexual repression thing, my parents were both members of the LDS church and they tried to hammer into my head that sex was only for reproduction. and not for anything else. By the time I reached age 20 and left home, I was finally free from their warped view of the world. Now I need to see a therapist to repair the samage they did.

I agree, sexual repression stems from religion and has really messed up society. Religion is typically administered and run by ultra-conservatives.

AC, better save your money and hire a hooker. If you have a sex problem, sitting on someone's couch talking all day long isn't going to solve it.

BTW sex is for reproduction. It is not a "talking point" contra what some would like it to be.

Re: Is sexual repression a serious problem?
Ever since i started my medication in february this year my sex drive has become zero. I don't ever feel the need to masturbate or have sex. In some ways this has been a really good blessing for me as my mind is free to think about things other then sex and it makes thing a lot less complicated when interacting with women as the thought of sex doesn't enter my mind.

Is this a bad thing? Should I be worried? I've never been so content and satisfied with things as I am nowadays.

I disagree. It looks to me like, historically, societies have grown to their peak of power while sexually repressed, and went into decline when social pressures for sexual repression were released.

Going by that, the islamic world should be the most powerful on the planet today and America should have collapsed in the late 1960's with the sexual revolution.

I think sexual repression can defenelty cause social isolation, low self esteem, a ligth depression and obssessions. I think there has to be a balance as to your sex life. It is also important to feel attracted to the object of your desire, in my case it's important for me to feel a connection and attraction to the woman I'm with for the healthy liberation of energy to take place during orgasm.
Therapy con help but eventually you need the intercourse.

I'm no doctor, but I don't believe it is. I asked a psychiatrist once, and he said it physically was completely fine, and I'm not sure, but I don't think mentally it is. However, it's more about what you find helpful/hurtful and the benefit/side effects of the med. It's worth looking into if you're concerned about the long term, but my first instinct is to say you'll be fine.

Every person is unique, so I can only speak from my own personal experience. First, is it just me, or are all the worst criminals and perverts in movies, stories, etc impotent? Pure connotation, but I would believe it if there was something behind it.

Anyway, I grew up in a ridiculously conservative Christian home and community.
*Let me interject for a second and say that there are extremes to every group, culture, and religion. Jesus, God, the Bible is twisted and extremely misrepresented by most out there, and it's a shame that Christians themselves are the biggest turnoff to Christianity.

To my point:
I basically had sexual repression all growing up. It was a combination of social pressure, religious commands/expectations, and my desire to be the best I could be. My "purity" had a profound effect on my life, and my guess is that much of it wasn't beneficial. I have no way of proving it, but I believe it played a role in my chronic pain that literally debilitated me, took me out of college, and plagues me with hell while I carry a part time job. It relates to muscle tension and nervous system, and when I finally started releasing, boy was it 5 seconds of heaven! (compared to my normal pain anyway). I know it wasn't the only contributor, but it did play a role in my physical and mental tension.

Contrary to many suggestions, maybe I'm just an anomaly, I had a lot of confidence, well, more like I was a cocky prick. I have a good self image. Even though I'm pasty white, and skinny as a rail, I've always been athletic and from an objective standpoint, don't have a whole lot to be ashamed about.

It amplified my naivete on sexual matters, relationships, and intimacy. There were definite benefits, as I kept all the blood in my regular head and never lost it to my other, my dragon. I was confident and great around women because of it, but I never "cashed in" on the physical aspect. And relationships don't get terribly deep in high school, IMAO anyway, so there wasn't much fulfillment there. Mixed bag.

When it comes down to it, no statistic covers the whole population. Everyone is different, and everyone will handle and react to things differently. I'm going to learn what I can, make the best decisions that I can, and observe the results as I go and act accordingly.

Thanks for bringing up the topic!

Really? When was the last time millions of Christians sanctioned the beating of their wives? Or stoned a person to death, for any reason? Or killed their daughters for going out with a man not their relative? Or cut someone's head off for burning the Bible? Or killed someone for defaming Christ? Or blew themselves up in a cafe full of Jews for no good reason than that they were Jews? Or killed thousands of American soldiers?

Most generalizations are tired and show a lack of foresight and thought.

I apologize for the pastor who made you stop dating his daughter... that is unfortunate. However, I really disagree with your post. I do believe sex is sacred and I am not an ultra conservative person. Sex is the most passionate expression you can give to a person. It really becomes meaningless if it's not in the context of commitment.
I have chosen to not have sex until I find a good guy who will be committed me and I am not depressed...nor do I have low self esteem.... It's foolish to think that sex should be an answer for all of those negative symptoms you described as sexual repression.
sexual repression is a state in which a person is prevented from being able to express their sexuality. Abstinence is not sexual repression in the right context. It's actually really beautiful.... abstinence out of moral obligation is though... and that's the problem.
Each person should be able to choose and be not be hfcalled close minded for their choice. You sexuality is your choice... everyone has desire and no one should feel guilty for it.

I think calling the sixties the sexual revolution gives the decade too much credit. Yes, more people became open, but few stopped thinking of sex as dirty. They feel guilty, then break taboo after taboo looking for something they'll never find... a real connection.

Shame at "weird" fantasies and thoughts drive the innocent thought to the dark and there it festers and infects the libido with sickness (perversion). Adults corrupt children by treating innocent play with kids their age as dirty making them targets for pedophiles. Men and women approach their relationships as adversaries instead of partners. I could go on, but won't... just makes me sad, that's all, lol.

Healthy committed relationships should be commended where partners aren't afraid to share, learn and grow without shame or guilt. I'm not advocating promiscuity, mind you... but I don't think sex education's a bad thing as long as both the good/bad are addressed in terms spiritual/physical/emotional consequences.

Yes, well not being able to bond with a woman attractive enough can cause certain frustration. I think if there isna ral attraction the satisfaction and feeling of fulfilment, the discharge of stress is much more profound, and if there is an emotional connection is even better that combination of attraction and emotional connection is what really balances you out. That is why sme guys who have to go to a prostitute tend to do so with the same one. Its the emotion and the physical in combination. But you also have to consider that the media has distorded the concept of beauty a little bit lifting the expectiations ever higher up tothe point where what we seek is only found in a photoshpped picture of the hottest models. It may sound corny, but in the end is only love, and in this case I specially refer to romantica love, that can heal the frustration, the depression, the obssessions, the low self esteem, the lack of confidence, tey to find that, but in the mean time do the best you can with what is available. Hope this helps.

...so this ape, are they attracted to human types? Seems like a better, more natural alternative to the typical human female. Do these apes respond well to human sexual contact? Do they suffer from gender identity syndrome?

Would they try to steel all my bananas and force a slow sadistic death upon me if I could provide no more?
