Was California named after a Black Amazon Warrior Queen?
Califia (aka Calafia) is the name of a legendary Black Amazon warrior queen, associated with the mythical Island of California. The U.S. state of California is thought by some to be named after Queen Califia (see Origin of the name California).

The legend of Queen Califia appears to date back to the novel Las sergas de Esplandián (The Adventures of Esplandián), written around 1510 by the Spanish writer Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo: "It is known that to the right of the Indies there exists an island called California very near the terrestrial paradise; and peopled by black women among whom there was not a single man since they lived in the way of the Amazons. They had beautiful robust bodies, spirited courage and great strength. Their island was the most impregnable in the world with its cliffs and headlands and rocky coasts. Their weapons were all of gold
. . . because in all the island there was no metal except gold. And there ruled over that island of California a queen of majestic proportions, more beautiful than all others, and in the very vigor of her womanhood. She was not petite, nor blond, nor golden-haired. She was large, and black as the ace of clubs. But the prejudice of color did not then exist even among the most brazen-faced or the most copper-headed. For, as you shall learn, she was reputed the most beautiful of women; and it was she, O Californias! who accomplished great deeds, she was valiant and courageous and ardent with a brave heart, and had ambitions to execute nobler actions than had been performed by any other ruler — Queen Califia."

This document helped to precipitate the Spanish hunt for gold in North America. In 1536 when the explorer Hernán Cortés landed with his crew in what is known today as Baja California, they believed that they had arrived in Califia's land. A portion of the original of this document Las sergas de Esplandián was translated by Edward Everett Hale for The Antiquarian Society, and the story was printed in the Atlantic Monthly magazine in 1864.[1] By 1770, the entire Pacific coast controlled by Spain had been given the name California, and the Spanish speaking people who lived there were called Californios.

California Amazons

Dora Beale Polk, The Island of California,: A History of the Myth, page 126: "In describing his California Amazons as "mujeres negras" Montalvo was following the color prejudices of the period. In his time, and in some places still, black describes any complexion other than white. John Mandeville describes a tribe neighboring his Amazons as "black enough and more than black . . . and they be clept Moors. When the explorers met the inhabitants of what they believed was "Ind," they lumped them automatically into the dark-skinned category of their crude "we/they" classification. Attitudes from the New World, the Crusades, and the invasion of the Moors were fused in Montalvo's California Amazons."[2]

Mural of Queen Califia and her Amazons in the Room of the Dons at the Mark Hopkins Hotel, San Francisco, CaliforniaA 1926 portrayal of Queen Califia and her Amazons is found in a mural in the Room of the Dons at the Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco, California. It was created for the opening of the hotel in 1926 by Maynard Dixon[3] and Frank Von Sloun.

The Spirit of California

Golden Dreams is a 23-minute film narrated by Whoopi Goldberg as "Califia" showing the history of California through several recreated scenes. The attraction is at Disney's California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. It opened with the park on February 8, 2001. It stars Whoopi Goldberg as Califia, the Queen of California.

The meaning of the word california in spanish is a wide bay.

The novel referenced is a romance novel from 1510 called The Adventures of Esplandian in english. It is a work of fiction whose queen is named califa.

Did the island in the novel ever exist? Who knows. People still search for atlantis.

Completely lost me with the idea of Whoopi Goldberg starring in anything as "the most beautiful of women". Unless it was an episode of The Twilight Zone maybe.

I agree and it was done by Disney who usually have overly cute singers, dancers, and characters. They must have used allot of makeup.

The toponym California is currently used by three North American entities — in the United States, by the state of California; and in Mexico, by the states of Baja California ("Lower California") and Baja California Sur ("South Lower California") (collectively, these three areas constitute Las Californias) — and shared by many other places in other parts of the world whose names derive from these.

Alta California ("Upper California") was the name of the State of California when it was still part of Mexico, and the Sea of Cortés is also known as the Gulf of California.

Several origins have been suggested for the word "California," including Spanish, Latin, South Asian and Aboriginal American origins. All of these are disputed

The meaning of the word california in Spanish is a wide bay. In Spanish exist four words to name these kind of orographic formations: ensenada (very small bay), bahía (bay), california (wide and bigger bay), and golfo(gulf).

However, the origin of the word california, is believe that comes from the Spanish word cala that means ensenada and the latin formix that means vault. It refers to the natural arched structure that still is seen in Cabo San Lucas.

Some suggest that the word California may signify that a place is "hot as an oven" (cali > hot, fornia > oven). It may be derived from calor de forn, Catalan for hot furnace, expression attributed to the explorer Gaspar de Portolà, or it may come from calida fornax, Latin for hot furnace.[5]

Another possible source may be kali forno, an indigenous phrase meaning "high mountains".[6] There is no agreement among scholars.

I do not see how you get Wide Bay in Spanish out of California!

"Bay" in Spanish is Bahia

and "Wide" is Ancho

How do you get California = "wide bay" out of that?

-----------------

Know that on the right hand from the Indies exists an island called California very close to a side of the Earthly Paradise; and it was populated by black women, without any man existing there, because they lived in the way of the Amazons. They had beautiful and robust bodies, and were brave and very strong. Their island was the strongest of the World, with its cliffs and rocky shores. Their weapons were golden and so were the harnesses of the wild beasts that they were accustomed to domesticate and ride, because there was no other metal in the island than gold.

– Las Sergas de Esplandián, (novela de caballería)
by García Ordóñez de Montalvo.
Published in Seville in 1510.

--------------------------------

California is East of the Indies (Asia).

California has a rocky coast comprised of cliffs.

California was populated by dark (black) skinned Natives.

California has tons of gold.

Alot of simliarities IMO.

No of course not.

California was named by the great Spanish Explorer Senior Underwear when he noticed hordes of Africans inhabiting what is now South Central Lost Anrgles. California means RUN LAPD is comming.

Of course it is not. It is named after a plant. And Los Angles means of the Angels. The names in California go back to the Spanish land grant days and before when they had Missions. And trust me, the Spanish were NOT naming anything after any African. They considered the Aficans lower than the Indians. At the Peak of their world was GOD, hence Los Angeles. Or San Fancisco = Saint Francis...etc...

Why is it that everytime we try to tell a wonderful story about Afrikan Women ( all other races get outraged ).?

When all races come from Afrikan Women anyway. Afrikan people ( THE MOORS) were all over the world and the " SO CALLED AMERICAS ". before any other race. In fact the Incas/ or what ever you want to call them where Afrikans

The Mexican is the newest race mix at this time. They are a mixture of Asian, Spanish and Afrikan bloodlines. Just like blue and yellow make green. Lets face it angry ass uneducated people out there just dont want to except the fact that Afrikan where here in the Amerikas for thousands of years before any other race.

My bloodline was here, millions of us did not start as a slave. Dumb ass spanish Columbus thought his dumb ass was in India and named everyone he saw a Indian. Even Cortez chriminal ass documented that the first persons they saw were the ( MOORS ).

*Her surname is Goldberg.

* She has a wide gap between her front teeth.

* Her lower face projects forward.

* Look at the shapes of the heads of those Amazons in the Queen California mural at the Wiki link...

* Disney produced it.

I'm willing to bet that not a single poster on this board (except me, of course) can correctly connect the above dots. OK, the challenge is on. Anyone?

Calm down, please. What upsets people is when history is REWRITTEN from the Afrocentric (or ANY-centric) perspective.

That is propaganda/myth/lies you are repeating about Columbus and India. Columbus, as a Knights Templar, knew *EXACTLY* where he was.

Re: Was California named after a Black Amazon Warrior Queen?
Lets not mince words here.

Queen Califa was a black woman belonging to one of the last indigenous tribes of North America.

I'm saying that the Americas were once populated exclusively by black people.

This was before the Greco-Roman word Africa came into usage.

There is substantial evidence that black tribes preceded red skinned hybrids in the Americas; the so called Native Americans are really the result of an infusion of non-black blood, which took place while the global sea level was still low enough for people to travel from the Old World to the New.

Those black tribes were chased out of Eurasia in two directions and arrived in the Americas from two directions.

When the sea level rose sufficient to impede travel from the Old World, the black tribes and their pursuers were isolated. Waters deposited in the newly formed oceans and sinking continents (all results of a global flood) caused the post diluvian sea level rise.

White Europeans later arrived in the Americas to find red skinned and straight haired hybrids dominating the continents and actual (black) natives living in isolated shelters such as Chaco Canyon, or the Dariente forest. Califa's tribe were confined to Baja California.

This is why white European invaders thought nothing of wiping out the "Indians." When they excuse their actions by stating the Indians had internecine wars long before whites arrived, they simply neglect to add that those wars were between hybrids and blacks.

They also neglect to admit that many of the so called African Americans alive today are actually descendants of the first Americans, and were not taken directly from Africa as slaves.

There is also evidence that like actual West African slaves who were taken to the Americas, the first Americans (indigenous blacks) were of ancient black Hebrew stock, or at least from a people who spoke and wrote a form of Proto-Hebrew.

The African slave story is a convenient excuse to keep disenfranchised: a people whose ancestors were labelled African slaves in order to destroy their true identities.

Indeed, the term African itself is used also for this purpose. The African continent is actually the world's largest reservation, created by the Greeks, the Romans and others who forced blacks out of the lands they conquered, and INTO the desert wasteland those same Greeks and Romans named Africa.

Re: Was California named after a Black Amazon Warrior Queen?
california name is probably from the mystic queen califia and also from the arab word khalīfah.

it could also be related to cali like caliente (hot) + forno/fornia (oven).

the word california doesn't exist in spanish, it means nothing like coast or wide or whatever.

meanwhile los angeles means the angels, sacramento means sacrament, san francisco means saint francis, monterey means mount king, colorado means reddish etc
