Seeing the powerful earthquakes such as the December 26th, 2004 event that triggered the tsunami disaster, people are looking for possible causes for the apparent instability of earth's crust. "End-times" alarmists and backyard researchers believe that the predicted imminent reversal of the earth's magnetic field may be a significant clue to these eschatological-scale events.
Scientists have been observing changes in the direction of earth's magnetic field which took place recently as well as in the distant past. NASA’s website features a map showing the gradual northward migration of the north magnetic pole in the past century and a half. Since more than double the time interval has elapsed since the last reversal, compared to the time lapse between the previous two pole reversals, some believe we may be overdue for the next north-south flip. (1,2) However, though the interval between reversals of the Earth’s magnetic field can be as short as 5,000 years, it can also be as long as 50 million years. There does not seem to be any logic or rule governing the planet’s behavior.
It is not only the direction but also the strength of this magnetic field that is a concern. In the time of dinosaurs, at an estimated 2.5 gauss, it was eighty percent stronger than it is now. This may have been one of the reasons such gigantic life forms thrived. It is now accepted that a catastrophic event ended the reign of giant reptiles. However, they did not re-evolve to equivalent dimensions. And the disappearance of mammalian “mega-fauna” in more recent times is still considered to be a mystery. The mastodons and mammoths would have towered over modern elephants. Why are there so few large terrestrial animals today?
The smaller average size of modern animals may be due to the gradual decline of Earth's "steady state" (as opposed to “pulsed”) magnetism. Thousands of years ago the Chinese, with their astute discovery of bio-electrical energy flows known as “meridians”, learned that magnetism promotes vigor in biological life. They used magnetic rocks in medical treatment. In the past century there has been a further decline of earth's magnetic field by another five percent down to only 0.5 gauss. This has led Dr. Dean Bonlie to identify a "magnetic deficiency syndrome" resulting from the biological stress caused by the weakening of this "energy base" for life. (3)
The weakening of earth’s magnetism is one of the factors believed to be predictive of a pole reversal. That magnetic field reversals have occurred in the past is confirmed in the geological record. What is unclear is how precisely the transition occurs, and what happens to life forms extant at the time of this pole flip.
Does the magnetic field drop to zero gauss? Dire predictions follow upon the heels of this theory. Electronic devices would all be at risk: there may be damage to, or complete loss of, all near-earth-orbiting satellites and possibly the space station itself. Effects on life forms could range from migrating birds losing their sense of direction to immune system decline and even widespread die-off from radiation-induced cancers.
Losing its protective magnetic envelope, the atmosphere would expand and become thinner, possibly leading to altitude sickness near sea level. No longer filtered out, deadly cosmic rays would kill most if, not all, living creatures on the surface. Only those living in deep caves would be safe. This scenario has prompted some to build underground bunkers in hopes of surviving.
Countering this frightening vision, NASA predicts that, rather than declining to zero gauss, the magnetic field would become disordered. Thus we might for short time have more than one north and south pole on the planet. This official scientific stance says that the magnetosphere which shields us from cosmic radiation would not entirely disappear either. Thus, while communications would be erratic and perhaps at times completely inactivated, humans would find ways to survive. However, there are dissenters in the ranks, pointing to the vast South Atlantic magnetic anomaly and radiation damage to satellites over that region attributed to weakening of the protective magnetosphere. The Earth's magnetic field is caused by motions in the ball of molten iron that lies at the centre of our planet. Electrical currents in the outer part of the core result in the planet-wide magnetic field.
The magnetic field not only shields us from harmful cosmic rays but also funnels charged particles shed by the Sun towards the magnetic poles, where they can produce beautiful auroral displays.
The field is also an invaluable aid to navigation. Even though today we have the pinpoint accuracy of the satellite-based Global Positioning System, many still rely on their compass needle pointing to magnetic north.
But as all who use a compass know, the position of the magnetic pole changes and there is evidence that it is changing at an increasing rate.
Working for the Canadian Government-funded Geolab, it is Larry Newitt's job is to track the wandering north magnetic pole.
Every few years he undertakes a seven hour flight from his base in Ottawa to Resolute Bay, the closest inhabited spot to the magnetic pole.
Then it is a three-and-a-half-hour flight north in a Twin-Otter aircraft which will land on ice. Today the pole is at sea and the expedition can only be done at the end of the winter when the sea is frozen.
Placing magnetic sensors on the ice the expedition attempts to surround the magnetic pole and triangulate its correct position. But each time they go back it's moved.
"We're following it across the ice," Larry Newitt told BBC News Online. "It jumps around from day to day and year to year and we have to keep track of it."
Measurements of the magnetic pole's position in 1904 by explorer Roald Amundsen put it in roughly the same place as an earlier though less accurate measurement made in 1831 by the British explorer John Ross. Since then it wandered slowly northward until about 30 years ago when it started behaving differently.
"There was a slow drift northward but it then started to move faster. It is now moving northward, away from Canada to Siberia, at a rate some four times faster than it used to," said Dr Newitt.
Soon, he added, expeditions to the magnetic pole would become more difficult as it moved out of range of the Twin Otter aircraft.
Pole reversal
The reason for the wandering of the magnetic pole is twofold. One cause is from beneath our feet, the other from above our heads.
Short-term jitter is caused by the influence of the solar wind on the Earth's magnetic field high in the atmosphere. But the steady drift reflects what is going on in the Earth's core.
But something else is happening to the Earth's magnetic field: it is getting weaker.
David Kerridge, of the British Geological Survey, told BBC News Online: "There is strong evidence that the field is decreasing by about 5% per century."
Some researchers suggest that it could be the start of a geomagnetic reversal, when the strength of the Earth's magnetic field decreases and then returns a few thousand years later with the north and south magnetic poles reversed. |

behalf of the Swift UVOT team.
Continued observations by the Swift UltraViolet/Optical Telescope
(UVOT) of the field of GRB 081109A (Immler et al., GCN Circ. 8500,
Kuin and Immler, GCN Circ. 8504, Immler et al., GCN Circ. 8509)
confirm that a weak source is present close to the REM position
(D'Avanzo et al, GCN Circ. 8501) and also close to the refined
XRT position (Beardmore et al., GCN Circ. 8506).
We detect a constant source in 166 images totaling 54.4 ks of exposure time
over a period of 544 ks (~1 week) in the UVOT white filter at position:
RA = 22:03:09.579, Dec = -54.42.40.49 (J2000)
with an uncertainty of 0.8 arcsec (90% confidence). The source
magnitude in the summed image is wh = 22.86 +/- 0.09 mag (11.5 sigma detection).
The values quoted above are on the UVOT Photometric System
(Poole et al, 2008, MNRAS 383,627). They are not corrected for the
expected galactic reddening of E(B-V) = 0.019 in the direction of
the burst (Schlegel et al. 1998).
We interpret this image as the possible host galaxy. In that case the
REM position offset suggests that the GRB took place on the edge of the
host galaxy. The source we detect is also just outside the XRT error
circle. |

NEWRY - Ed and Loretta Powers were sipping coffee at their kitchen table at about 5:30 on Thursday morning when they heard a loud explosion.
They jumped from their chairs and each looked out a different window. Ed thought their wood stove had blown up; Loretta looked to the sky for falling debris.
"It got us out of the chairs real quick," Newry Administrator Loretta Powers said Thursday afternoon at the town office.
What the Powers and others from Hanover to Newry heard and felt was a minor earthquake that hit at 5:26 a.m., about 6 miles west of Rumford Center, according to a report from the Maine and U.S. geological surveys.
There were no immediate reports of damage from the quake that measured 2.2 on the Richter scale, which measures the magnitude of an earthquake based on seismogram records.
The quake's epicenter appeared to be in Newry's Plumbago Mountain area north of Hanover's Howard Pond, based on enlarged maps of the site. Its depth was 8.7 miles, according to the New England Seismic Network in Boston.
The Powers live near Bear River, a few miles west of the epicenter.
"It was rumbling and then there was a bad explosion. It was weird. My son said it shook his bed," Powers said.
"It sounded like someone had blasted at Mount Will. All I heard was a huge blast," Newry Deputy Clerk Anita Clark said inside the town office on Thursday afternoon.
Clark, who lives farther west along Sunday River, said the quake rattled plates on walls inside her home.
"Some people who called us said they thought it was a plane crash, some thought their roof had caved in or their woodpile fell over," Clark said. "I looked around at my neighbors' houses because I thought it was a propane tank explosion." |

Yup, in SC that is what an earthquake sounds like. A big "booomm" and everybody thinks "What was that?" The last one, a couple years ago, knocked a guy off his ladder where he was climbing to the roof of his house to clean gutters. |

MYSTERY MOON OF VENUS: The second planet from the sun has no moon, yet last night, Nov. 17th, Venus did have a companion. John Stetson photographed the duo shining through the cobalt-blue twilight skies of Portland, Maine:

There is a lovely pic of Venus with its companion. There is no explanation of where this companion came from nor where it is going, but it does say that Venus eclipses it. Is it stationary or is it moving or what!

Whats up with all these planets i been reading about picking up more moons/companions?
Where the hell they coming from?
Saturn/jupiter/venus....what the hell else is going happen?
Read a story about earth is gonna pick-up a rock in the near future,circle us for a while then shoot back out.
Last year we had a small rock in our orbit but they didnt say crap about until it was shootin back out,and thats the one i kept seeing that would come-up around 9pm and looked like a dang second moon.It didnt stay up long,maybe about 20 mins or so,so it must have been moving really fast in our orbit. |

There's no real moon mystery here. Venus' temporary sidekick was 3rd-magnitude star λ Sagittarii located 77 light years from Earth. Venus passes by λ Sagittarii from time to time. In 1984 Venus completely eclipsed the star; last night the separation was a relatively spacious 0.1o. |

i think most US quakes (such as recent cluster in nevada) are tptb using explosives to soften the earth around their underground bases to reduce shock when the mushrooms start sprouting above. |
