Any of this is oversimplifying it, but "the kabbalists" view is that humanity has lost track, that the Jews are slightly more "tuned" to the spiritual, and a guide to help correct mankind's "broken-ness".
Jesus' role in that was to remind them that they weren't meant to hide in Israel and congratulate each other on their holiness, but to spread their teachings. He never left, but "masters" are there to teach their students, who them teach their students, etc., until all those willing learn. He had plenty of work to do in Israel, there was no real need to travel around the world. I'm sure there were a fair number of outsiders listening, too.
Keeping "the secret" is part of the problem Jews have been dealing with forever. Some folks just prefer feeling special, and they didn't spread the word, they weren't the shining light. As a result, every so often god gives them a boot to the head, and reminds them.
God did/does come to the others. The idea that there's one "best" book is a little goofy when most of these folks believe the same thing. There are some core teachings that go way back, and have been distributed throughout the world, from hinduism to islam.
Working back, you can trace virtually all religions to the same core. Of course, few people talk about it, to tell a christian or muslim their history ties into the hindus makes them go nutty.
We could do with less of the stupidity and ignorance, though. Without a doubt.
