I have a wild hair to pick up the good book after 20 years. Which version or translation is the best?
I notice now there is english standard version, ESV.
I read the NASB book years ago and found it poetic yet still easy to follow unlike King james.
whats the scoop?
I don't go to church, not exactly religious either. But I enjoy reading the Bible sometimes Quoting: Anonymous Coward 546967
Read the books that were excluded or deleted from the bible. They are a much better read and if they were censored by being removed you've got to know they are the ones with information that the religions don't want you to have...
that is my suggestion. or, just get a bible with the words of Christ in red and read only the red words... a MUCH more clear and accurate connection with what He came to teach us. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 387487 11/20/2008 2:06 AM | | Re: which Bible version? | Quote | NIV is so corrupt that moslems use it to disprove Christ's divinity.
King James is usually attacked by people that are simply homosexuals or religion haters. Oh, they've got every excuse in the book. Pun intended.
New American Standard has several errors that actually prompted one translator to disavow it, but if you are aware of those errors ahead of time it is still the most mature translation. The heresies it contains are more prominent in other translations, things like saying "his mother and father" instead of "Joseph and His mother", which if quoted from 500 years from now will spawn sects using it to debate Christ's divinity. The point is, you will have problems if you still believe the bible is 100% infallible Word Of God, which is not very mature, considering that the bible itself says "the lying pen of the scribes hath falsified it". So if you accept that it is NOT infallible, New American Standard is probably the best.
My favorite bible I ever had was "The Parallel New Testament And Unger's Bible Handbook". Nice bible, KJV and NASB side by side, with Ungar's interpretation for when you can't seem to make your own.
RSV is too dumbed down. Living Bible is a joke, deliberately misinterpretting that homo king david's story to make him look straight, saying that he "shook hands" with the other man when it clearly says he *kissed* him, etc.
biblegateway.com
plug in your favorite scripture passages, then view various translations, and pick the one you like. |

No, that would be the King James Version.
Sorry mopar but NIV is part of the edition that took place at the council of nicea 364AD.
But don't fret, I'm sure those catholics know what they're doing, little boy lovers usually do. Take for instance all the knowledge we got from the ancient Greeks. Quoting: Frank Rook 554525
The KJV and NIV are both Protestant translations.
The old KJV (the old Authorized version) is a very good literal translation. |

it feels strange reading bible online. I like to hold it in my hand.
I was looking at one with lambskin but it's expensive 60 dollars.
it's the esv version which I read is very easy to understand, yet retains alot of the meaning. It was commissioned in 2001
I think I might go with a newer book, since I read the newer translations often have the new documents in the past 30 years that have been discovered. Then added to the text
but part of me doubts the whole thing...who wrote all this stuff over the last 600 years? seriously..it could have been a satanist for all we know in some of the books, altering things. |

NIV -New International Version is the easiest to read
Hi Mopar,
they have turned the NIV into virtual hamburger. There is alot of stuff missing from it. However, we were warned this would happen as it is written "If any man adds to or subtracts from the words of this book, so also shall his name be subtracted from the book of life". Many people ask "is once saved always saved" and there is your answer. A loud resounding no.
The best bible versions you can use are as follows
Tyndale 1534
Geneva 1560
Geneva 1599 - Preferable. Both Geneva's used Tyndale for their foundation - In their notes they identified Pope Boniface who proclaimed himself to be God with Unam Sanctum and reestablished the Jubilee in 1302
King James Version 1611 - Great translation but notes are government endorsed
The Life Application NIV is published by Zondervan who is owned by Harper Collins and Rupert Murdoch. Harper collins publishes the Satanic Bible and the teachings of Anton Lavey. Do some research but here is just one link to get you started.
Go with the Geneva 1599. Read the notes and your view of where we are in the prophetic timeline will never be the same...
In Yeshua,

Would you please you provide my-self and others any supporting materials? I am interested learning this point of view. Do you have the means of further elaborating for us regarding the latter points made in your statement for the intellectuals in the crowed?

Myself I read the OT in the original Hebrew. My Stone Edition has, besides an English translation, an Aramaic translation because that was the first translation and hence closest in time to the original sense of the words. Some of the ancient Hebrew usages were already lost even in Jesus day.
Even the Hebrew is in a sense a translation because the original Torah at Sinai was given without breaks between the words - like this:

The spaces were added later.
The last time I was in Jerusalem I used to visit with a madman who live in a cardboard box outside the Prime Ministers residence. He could read the Hebrew and pull the most surprising things out by changing the word spacing. owner of an extensive collection of curios from the exotic orient |
