Please help: Smells like cat litter - NO CAT
I had the same problem in August (no cat in house) A/C broken, as a result the smell worsened and it was obvious something had died in the wall. Due to the extreme heat the decomposition process was accelerated and the smell was gone in a few days. I am now having the same problem in 2 different locations and outside temp is in the 30s so I have the heat on. The smell is really making me nauseous but even if I crank the heat I don't think it will work because the space behind the walls to exterior is uninsulated (freestanding rental apt. smell is in attic bedroom) Any suggestions?? I can't access the space of death and the cold weather has probably slowed the decaying...UGH!

get some really strong incense - Nag Champa or something may help but unless you want to open the wall you're pretty much stuck with it.

go to grocery store, buy a bag of charcoal [ to absorb smell ] and a bag of cedar chips or other wood chips. Put charcoal in mesh bags like produce comes in and place in every room, along with a bowl of the wood chips used like Potpourri.. Cheap, easy air exchange..

Just a thought..

Call the law, tell them you suspect the previous tenant left a body plastered up into the wall - they'll take the wall out for you.

Re: Please help: Smells like cat litter - NO CAT
In a stage of deterioration SOME organic materials will
smell like cat spray due to the spores of a mold/fungus.

it is also POSSIBLE there was no dead creature and simply
back up of fluids from what caused the A/c to stop operating

the A/C fluids themselves CAN smell like a cats spray

if its a mold it moved it is now in a larger area and can
keep growing, maybe along wood beams

sorry to tell you but you will need to get into
the walls where the smell is
somehow the fungus got tracked from the A/C to other spots
it will smell till the area is disinfected with peroxide
and hot air pumped until its dry again.

If you wait till weather warms up it will eat along all your wall beams and whole house will become a health hazard

go to your local Agway and ask who to speak to about how to handle it

there will be a couple of guys locally who can give you advice before you get into a huge expense

Good luck to you.

the A/C fluids themselves CAN smell like a cats spray

Is your place carpeted? If so, how old is the carpet? Some of the older carpet had a clay mixture in the latex glue used to glue the primary and secondary backing together. When it gets wet it will smell like cat litter. Cats have been known to become so attracted to it they would shit and piss all over the carpet even though their litter box was readily available.

That would be funny shit, for like Reno 911 or Cops....

Paranoid mice with sores on their faces and a distant, haunted look in their eyes. Will rehab work for them? And will this spill over into the chipmunk community?...This week on Oprah.....

connecting bathroms in apts sometimes transfers orders..or steam clean carpets and wash everything over time...swiffer mop your walls and baseboards..and clean out air ducts that could be connecting to the source of foul smells..doing all this should solve problem unless neighbor keeps litter box in connecting bathroom....

after cleaning up then open window turn off heat and place a fan on the window sill pointing to the outside to draw all stale air ""out"" of your inviroment to the outside ...do this again in several days..over time it will rid the smell..swiffer mop your ceiling ...wood furniture ..damp mop your sofa table legs..etc..ajax works good to rid urine smells from table legs sofa legs floors ..woodwork....rinse well with damp paper cloth

If you have mice, one may have gotten into the drip-pan at the bottom of your refridgerator and drowned. That happened to me once. The smell was ugly, even uglier was cleaning the pan.

Seriously? I was going to say that it might be mold or mildew, since the OP posted about the air conditioner during the summer.

Thank you LifesReflections* I am already doing the charcoal brickets which helps a little. However, LOL at the reply after yours! It may actually come to calling 911 bc landlord doesn't do a thing (hope it is some fungus eating the structure it will be Karmatic justice for him and I'll be out of here soon enough).

In response to other questions:
No carpet
no adjoining apt (cottage connects to a garage)
no cats
mice yes
meth no (rich landlord only uses garage to store sports cars;
(did not use AC) using forced air heat (smell not in vents, just walls not near vents)
not cat urine or spray, more like dirty litter box x100!
note previously same smell in Aug which progressed quickly from dirty cat litter odor to definite dead vermin.
Right now it is 29 degrees out and the room in which is is the worst doesn't have windows that open, just high skylight which won't fit a fan.
Thanks to all, if any further ideas lmk

Wow, I have a very similar problem but I haven't moved in to the apartment yet, I'm suppose to move in this Friday but here's my problem.

The guy that is living in the apartment I'm about to move into does not own any cats and neither do I. So he along with my friend invited me to my future apartment to watch some football and hangout. After drinking 3 coronas naturally it was piss time, I got up to take a piss and noticed a really strong smell of Cat litter piss and shit in the bathroom (and its a REALLY NICELY DONE BATHROOM AT THAT!). It was rainy outside and humid so that might have "enhanced" the smell by about 10 fold. I was kinda pissed off cause the guy didn't tell me what the problem was before I gave the deposit and he didn't really confront the neighbor downstairs about the problem. So I find out that the neighbor owns the cat. Now after speaking with a few property owners there are one of two things or maybe even both that could be creating this issue. Either he lives like a slob and doesn't clean up after his cat and the smell of the litter box is coming up to the bathroom OR he is emptying the cat litter poop into the toilet and its clogging the septic tank or getting stuck in the plumbing system somehow backing into my (future)apartment bathroom. Now I haven't signed a lease yet for this apartment and just called the landlord this morning to let him know he's got to get this fixed before I move in. So I would suggest taking a look into the plumbing system/septic tank or check if your neighbors are slobs, simple as that.

Thanks,
Los
