Re: I Want To Help A Family This Christmas
I am looking for a family I can help this coming Christmas.

Last year I helped a young woman with 4 kids.
It was more of a blessing to me then I could have imagined.

Last year I asked for donations or gifts from my friends and local businesses. I had a car load.

I urge you to find someone you can help. Go to your local foodbank or all a local womans shelter.
There are plenty who need help.

If you are still looking for someone to help out this Christmas, I have a 13 year old daughter. She loves anything that is for her age. Really not a picky girl at all. As with MANY families this Christmas just ain't looking all that promising as far as gifts. If you would like more information about me or my situation then please email me. I don't like to put it out there for the whole world to see because people are so quick to judge:)

Re: I Want To Help A Family This Christmas
That is very sweet. I don't know about Akron but there are tons of people in Youngstown who are in trouble. My family is one of the severely financially challenged as well :).

I think it's sweet you want to help one family, but can I give you some advice? Take the same amount of money and effort and stock up on clearance toys and generic food staples. Clearance toys will go further and generic food will too. Then make a big donation to your local food bank and Toys for Tots. By the way, most people don't know this but you should make your donation to the neediest county within driving distance. Especially with Toys for Tots. Toys for Tots does NOT distribute past the county the toy was donated in (most people think it's all spread out evenly) so rich counties help fewer families and poor counties end up getting the shaft.

By the way, if you only want to help a family, go heavier on the toys than the food. Families can sign up for food stamps which generally go further the bigger the family is (buying in bulk and all). Toys are allot harder to come by around Christmas time.

Our family has done this for the last couple of years, as well as taken a car load of gifts to The Samaritan House Shelter in Denver.

It means a helluva lot more to me than any material possessions could!

Last year we helped a family who had moved here from Atlanta with nothing but what they had in their car; a single mom & 3 teenage kids. We gave them bedding, lamps, food and I collected from some of my friends and business associates and bought the mom a chest freezer, which was all she wanted. We even took Christmas presents to them (clothes, etc.) on Christmas Eve (we always "doorbell ditched" them, except for the freezer, so we were truly "anonymous"). It made our whole family feel good and we got feedback through the "grapevine" that they said it was the BEST Christmas they had ever had!

We are planning to do something similar this year...

Re: I Want To Help A Family This Christmas
I am a struggling mother this Christmas. My problem is that it is too late to call on organizations for help. There is a reason that I waited and I would be more then happy to explain it to you in a private email or phone. I have a 12 year old daughter. Just a couple of small gifts would mean so much to her. Please email me. If you know of any body else please tell them about me.

if you contact the salvation army they would have leads too, as well as most any church in your area
 Quoting: malu

speaking of salvation army, I was in there the other day and they have those prices hiked so high up! The poor can't even afford it. People donate things thinking they are helping the poor, but the Salvation Army is getting greedy on donations for the poor. I was in there and there was a dresser they had piced 350.00. They had an old stained t shirt for 6.00. You can get a new one at walmart for 5.00 on clearance. There was a frame I liked, priced $6.00, and when I turned it over, the price said 2.00 at walmart. I think this is greedy of them, and I told them so.

I started thinking of a way to help the poor, and also everyone else. I thought about opening up a place big enough to take in donations of cloths, furniture, food, ect. The only difference would be that people could come and get what they need for free, and people could donate their things there, but also get things they may want or need for free as well. We could take in donations for money to pay the bill for the price of the rent for the place, if the whole communities chipped in. If there was extra money, it would be to feed the poor. That way there would be no needy at all, and everyone would have what they really need to be happy.

You are so right. Some of these thrift stores just get greedy. On donated crap no less. There's usually at least one good thrift store with decent prices in driving distance. You're idea is a good one but I have seen thrift stores try something close and it never works. You can't count on donations to pay the bills month to month or cover other overhead reliably. Thrift stores have to charge something, just out of sheer necessity, but many turn that around into something good. There's a nice local one that uses their proceeds to fund a food bank and Toys for Tots distribution near here.

It's easy to find someone poor, they are all around you. Buy gift certificates to local grocery stores, and hand them out when you recognize someone that appears to have less. Or give them out in the store!

Whoever found the thread thanks ... I searched

I volunteer at a free clothes place. It's open year round.
I also give food away to friends who are out of work.
I try to do anything I can to help people.

I picked 2 people both with kids who need help. They didn't ask for toys or xbox no they asked for hair conditioner and personal items for their kids.

It broke my heart someone asking for basic things. Things I don't think twice about buying for myself.

Thanks Again ...

Re: I Want To Help A Family This Christmas
OP, helping "A FAMILY" IS a good thing. Here's another suggestion; Find a church that provides free 'sit down' lunches in their buildings and donate food or money to help them keep their programs going. They'll really appreciate it and you don't have to be religious or anything to feel good about it. The ones in our town, there are four that do it, rotate weeks. They feed a LOT of people who wouldn't ordinarily have access to a good hot meal. They are having the same problems that the food banks are having, more and more demand for less and less supply.

We do that at the place I volunteer plus give away free clothes and household goods.

I like helping the kids and getting to know them. I have photos from the kids I did this for last year. I left their house in tears and decided that is what christmas is all about.

I told my family not to get me anything and to help put the packages together.

The last 2 years I have have suggested to my family for us to sponser a needy family (food, clothing and heat) instead of exchanging gifts. They tell me that they get pleasure out of giving to each other. We are talking frivilous stuff that none of us need. And these are hardcore Christains that think Christmas is about Jesus. This year Im out. I am hoping to find the right opportunity to give where it is needed

Re: I Want To Help A Family This Christmas
Personally know someone that is struggling this year?

we have a neighbor that is an employed single mom and she never complains, she just keeps going... her son is a teenager with special needs.

we will help them this season but they will never know it was us.

we'll pay their electric bill... it's easy to go into the office and give the address and last name and tell them you want to pay the bill... pay cash, no paper trail.

gift cards to clothing stores will appear in their mailbox.

gift cards for the grocery store will come in a card with no signature...

many people are too proud to ask for anything and my neighbor would be mortified if she knew help was coming from us... but we see first hand her struggle and we would not want to cause her any shame... but in our world we don't know anyone more worthy of a little relief...

we don't celebrate cmas because it's a vatican scam, but because I try very hard to follow the teachings of Christ I know I can work my own miracles in the life of others. There is no better time than when the pressures of the holiday season coming bearing down on others.
