Citigroup collapses! Banking Shutdown Possible
It pains me deeply to announce that, despite the massive government rescue, yesterday’s collapse of Citigroup could ultimately lead to a shutdown of the global banking system.

For many years, I hoped this would never happen, and I thought we might be able to avoid it.

Indeed, that’s why, my firm, Weiss Research, first began rating the safety of the nation’s banks in the early 1980s, and why I later founded Weiss Ratings, a separate subsidiary dedicated exclusively to safety ratings — on thousands of banks, insurance companies, brokerage firms, mutual funds and stocks.

That was several days ago, prior to a gigantic bailout.

So, you're a little behind on your news.

Why is this pinned? Citigroup was *bailed out* by the federal government several days ago.

This crisis is several days old, and it has been resolved (at least for now).

e.g., Citigroups's stock has more than doubled since then.

Old/obsolete news.

you have not read the article, it says, eventhough there was a bailout, citigroup will shut down.

it's not that they aren't awake to this... yes, I saw some of this a few days ago... it's that Congress WILL NOT stop doing what it's been doing.

Re: Citigroup collapses! Banking Shutdown Possible
I saw Congressman Tom Latham Tuesday at Staples in Ames. I asked him what he thought of the bailout of Citigroup & the bailouts in general. He said "they are crazy".

I then told him how Citigroup was riping off the mortgage holders with convenience fees of $10 to pay our mortgage online.

He said this was definitely something he was going to check into.

I was reading Monday WSJ and they said Citigroup has 1.2 trillion no-declared assets beyond the 2.2 trillion official assets.
what are those $1.2 trillion all about ?? derivatives ?? hedge fund investment ? who knows ??

Apparently, fearful that congress might make these folks stop giving themselves bonuses with the bailout money, they're calling them "retention fees" these days.

I guess when you're making hundreds of millions a year, you really need an incentive to stick around...even though you helped get the company into this mess in the first place...

Re: Citigroup collapses! Banking Shutdown Possible
How can they explain it when the bailout equals the national debt?

I mean, if they could create 9+ trillion over a year, then they might as well just print another and pay off the debt. Wait, I always thought that the debt was in the hands of the banks like citigroup., So if we pay them back their money that we owe, doesn;t that give them the money they need to survive?
