Well Drained Soil? Anyone have any mix ratios?
I'm growing some herbs thanks to everyones help here.

I have Oregano which is growing so slow. I heard that it needs well drained soil. I think the soil I have was just potting soil.

I cant find any mix ratios for well drained soil. Anyone got any ideas?

I have sand and perlite now...

1/3 potting soil + 1/3 pearite + 1/3 peat moss

or

1/4 potting soil + 1/4 pearlite + 1/4 peat moss + 1/4 part orchid bark

Make sure your pot is porous and has drainage holes and don't let the pot sit in water for more than 30 minutes.

Happy Growing!

Many herbs like less than perfect dirt and dryer
(drier?) soil.

I know my herbs do better when I basically ignore them and only cut them back to make them bushier and stop seed production.

Is it in the soil or a container?

The Oregano Ive had for months now and its only grown a few inches.

Ive been ignoring it for a long time now, I think after all this time, something like the soil maybe the problem.

I rarely water the Oregano.

Sand.

Just sand.

I live in Florida and have sand.

I grow many things in the sand.

Needs much water, but I don't have any problems.

Who needs mixing!>?! haha

Re: Well Drained Soil? Anyone have any mix ratios?
The ratio doesn't matter so much. Don't ever let them go bone dry and don't over water.

Let the top of the soil get dry to the touch then drench them. Should be about once a week at start and more frequently later.

Also make sure that they are sitting high in the soil. Any soil on top of the very top roots that touches the stem is bad. Keep the soil away from the stem by planting them high up in a mound.

Don't worry about ratios. Any mix will do, just get the fundamentals right.

You can use what people in the hobby of bonsai widely use. It is called turface. Retains some moisture but drains well. Mix that with some potting mix to make it not retain so much water. If you cannot find turface, you can use Schultz aquatic plant soil. Or, if the potting mix is retaining enough moisture as is, you can increase drainage cheaply by using chicken or poultry grit, but make sure the grit is the granite chips. Lastly, you can use a product called oil-dri, which is in the automotive dept in walmart or autozone, or any auto parts store. It is a calcined clay product. Good luck.

if you DON'T water it, it's not going to grow...

use miracle grow in well drained soil. Twice a week for 6 weeks..
