Another 70's New Age Guru dies..... Adi Da / Bubba Free John.

Controversial 70s guru Adi Da (aka Bubba Free John etc etc) died on Thanksgiving.

My main connection to him is his strong early influence from my erstwhile guru Swami Muktananda. I have a little familiarity with Da from attending programs run by his devotees here in Berkeley; these included some readings from his books, and watching him on video.

I've always been intrigued by how Da was accepted as a super high-class teacher by major writers and philosophers like Ken Wilber and Alan Watts... since his teachings on the whole had so little resonance for me. I've previously posted about Wilber here and here. It was this curiosity about Da's popularity that inspired me to start this blog with a post about Adi Da over a year ago.

I've joined some discussion about Adi Da at the Nonduality Blog and elsewhere. Nonduality.org may be the most lively forum on the topic; Guruphiliac has also added a Da post.

Zen Master Seung Sahn used to say "A bad situation is a good situation." If someone is attached to money, and it's working out well for him, it's very difficult to see and examine and question the underlying attachment. But when a financial crisis hits, the bad situation is an inspiration for inquiry, for looking to the roots of the suffering in our own thinking. Likewise, when a guru dies, the bad situation may be the best time to wonder about our tendency to seek external authority above believing our own experience. That's generally what I've been saying in those discussions.

I happen to have been present in the Ganeshpuri India ashram when Swami Muktananda died. As I saw the devotees scrambling for a new way to project their belief and devotion during those days, it made me wonder about how the needs and wants and expectations of the followers may be the most fundamental part of the equation. (If authoritarian gurus didn't exist, we'd have to invent them.) I've always thought that being in the midst of Muktananda's death-drama was a key experience in pointing me toward a more independent path, which is likely why Da's passing is interesting to me today.

Didn't Adi Da promote himself as God Himself to his students, and as the ultimate object of all their spiritual aspirations?

What is your take on this?

How can this really be the real deal?

Shalom!

I was not that familiar with him... I did notice over the last 20 years he was constantly changing his name. The Love Guru at one time.

I understand that his devotees are WAITING for the 3 DAY for him to RETURN to his body... this was going to be his ULTIMATE PROOF of himself as God.

But really... it is AMAZING that we all follow and listen to these DEAD GURU's.

I am into the TRUE STORES that they are Mythology.... now those stories are when Men were truly GOD's.

The Mind and weave great DEPTHS of s T O R I E S.... but the APPLICATION of truing THOSE into a REALITY has never been provem..

I remember in the early days of the channels they were PROMOTING IMMORTALITY. yea right... now they are promoting ways to DIE the body consciously.

Over time.. they ALL change their story..... as we look back over the NEW AGE PRODUCTS prsented by Guru's and channels... I would say they have NOT DELIVERED the goods... and of course... it is the STUDENTS FAULT.

yea yea yea...

Smile.

This is the point... and as the TEACHER... they always point the finger at the student... so that cover their ass for taking the millions of dollars. It is AMAZING the amount of money that is given to these groups... I know, I got all caught up it in years ago... 70K later I woke up.

Smile.

My take: take whatever spiritual energy your guru may offer and become like him, if that is really attractive to you.

Back when Rajneesh was leaving America, in disgrace and under a legal cloud as his Oregon super-commune was collapsing... he said something like: If all these people chose to worship me as God, that was their mistake. Whatever difficulties it's causing them, it's the result of them making that mistake.

The irritating part was that Rajneesh was taking no responsibility, even though it was his own words and actions that inspired so many people to blind devotion. And the most irritating part is that Rajneesh had a point. Ultimately, we do make our own choice when we believe in and follow an authority. If we're ready to make the leap to more independent thinking, no one else is going to do it for us. (Congrats on making the leap, ListenUp... even if it took you $70K to do so.)
