The reason why the number of stabbings is different per person is because one was stabbed first to scare the other in to talking. It's what I would do if I were evil - stab them both back and forth until it appeared one knew more than the other and then in front of him stabbed the other guy quite a lot more times so as to scare him in to talking.
They were torturing them to make certain they didn't have back up copies of their DNA / Virus work.
All across the globe...9 out of 10 microbiologist have or will die by "accident" over the past 10 years and coming 10 years. One would be better off working as a 7-11 clerk on the graveyard shift than learning how to cure humans.

Back before September 11, 2001, when we had many good message boards on the net, the deaths of the microbiologists was a big topic. At that time, boards such as glp, peanuts gang, and enterprise mission, kept a running list of the dead microbiologists, and added the name each time a new death occurred.
