Underground Explosions in Indianapolis
Now is just me or is the news getting weirder?!

Third explosion in eight days injures three

Alex Sanz/Eyewitness News

Saturday´s blasts marked the third such incidents since New Year´s Eve last Friday. The explosions occurred underground on West Market Street where it meets Capitol Avenue, and sent three people to the hospital with minor injuries.

"We had what I consider a major explosion. It sounded literally like a sonic boom." said Indianapolis firefighter John Harding.

The force of the blast shattered store-front windows, ripped gashes in concrete floors and shook buildings for blocks.

Witness Jack Bayt recalled, "You can see the glass and the door frame laying on the street."

Tonight, the city´s third underground explosion in eight days is raising serious questions. Why has it happened again? The power company maintains its system is safe. But the city´s fire chief is demanding answers. And he wants them before more people are hurt.

"This many, close together, we need to take a look at that and assess what´s going on." state Indianapolis Fire Chief James Greeson, "I mean, if this had been a weekday, it could´ve been much worse."

The explosion destroyed a long-standing West Market Street bookstore. And made a mess of things at next-door businesses.

It came three days after a series of explosions blocks away forced I-P-L to cut power to hundreds.
No one is sure, but there is speculation heavy rains contributed to a short circuit in underground power lines.

And who can forget that New Year´s Eve blast on East Market Street that filled the Downtown skyline with columns of smoke? The culprit there, according to officials, was an underground transformer fire.

That is not a "short cicuit" or a "transfomer fire"!! They sound like stories for children out of a comic book.

That is an EXPLOSION and must be caused by SOMETHING.

You must wake up and come back to reality before it is too late for god´s sake!!

Yes things are getting weird. Last week downtown Detroit had an underground explosion. City officials said it was caused by underground electric cables on fire. Explosion was so foreful it blew alot of manhole covers high into the air.

This line:

Utter nonsense, electricity does not explode like this. It can trigger an explosion, like gas fumes, but by itself even at very high voltages, you´ll get sparking and popping at best. Transformers are another story, but still the blast was sizable. And the official statement is: We don´t know?

Sorry...this was the 2nd snip from the star article I wanted to post:

"Residents standing on the street said they learned of the explosions when the building´s alarm went off, but for Cindy Mavrick, who lives on the second floor on the building´s north side, the blasts seemed frighteningly close.

"I heard a loud boom, and the building shook," she said. "There´s construction down here (at the Hilton Hotel), but this I knew was different."

When firefighters arrived, smoke was coming from three manholes, said engineer John Hardin. Two manholes emitted medium-brown smoke, and the third, black smoke, he said."

Re: Underground Explosions in Indianapolis
I don´t think this is any kind of conspiracy. I think it is one of two things.

1. Very old and poorly maintained underground infrastructure is falling apart. This has now developed into a gas leak(s). Electrical short circuit(s) at the wrong place and time have resulted in explosions. The local gov´t officials are doing their best to keep a lid on it to avoid a public panic.

2. Gang punks are running "meth" labs in a rathole environment beneath the city.

I´m betting it´s door #1

Re: Underground Explosions in Indianapolis
With the events that happened in Asia with the tusnami and subsequent earthquakes I don´t think you can rule out magma activity as being the cause.

That part of Indiana is in the New Madrid Zone and earth fractures could be allowing water seeping down from the surface (most of Indiana is being flooded at this time because of massive storms)to mix with magma welling up from a cracked fissure.

Not saying this is so but it´s something that sould be considered.

Here´s a map that shows the New Madrid Zone.

Found it:

Underground fire blows off manhole lids

January 3, 2005

At least a dozen cast-iron covers blew off manholes along Congress in downtown Detroit on Sunday after a fire began beneath the street.

Officials with DTE Energy and Michigan Consolidated Gas said the blaze, under the intersection with Cadillac Square and Randolph, started about 4 p.m. Its cause wasn´t known Sunday night.

As underground cables burned and melted, the heat intensified, said Lorie Kessler, spokeswoman for DTE and MichCon. Pressure built up beneath the street and forced off the manhole covers.

"Between 15 and 20 blew off," Kessler said.

No one was hurt. About 100 feet of cable must be replaced beneath the street. One building near the intersection appeared to have lost power, Kessler said, but none seemed to have lost gas service.

MichCon workers said they didn´t detect any natural gas leaking in the area.

Authorities couldn´t say how far up the covers flew, but workers at the scene said some were discovered feet away from their holes.

The covers, some smashed into pieces, were piled beneath a streetlight as MichCon workers inspected the open holes Sunday night.

The manholes, which allow workers access to pipes and cables beneath the streets´ surface, allow access to several utility companies, including Detroit´s Public Lighting Department.

The utilities worked with Detroit fire officials to put out the blaze. Smoke poured from some of the open manholes, leaving the lingering stench of burning wires.

Detroit police officials said they blocked off the area to vehicles, though several motorists drove through the yellow police tape, toward the uncovered manholes. MichCon workers redirected them.

Kessler expected work at the site to continue today.

This kind of thing happens in NYC all the time.
They put salt on the roads when it´s icey. Then the weather warms up and it rains. The rain mixes with the salt and goes down into the under ground utilities. Gets on a transformor, builds up and boom.
