To understand why the discussion is so hysterically funny, here are the facts about how water freezes, in general, and in lakes. Water does not behave like other liquids do, there is an anomaly at 39 F (4 C), and also solid water floats rather than sinks.
The fact that water has a maximum density at about 39 degrees Fahrenheit, or 4 degrees Celsius, has further significant consequences for living things. When cold water cools the surface of a freshwater lake, the water at the surface becomes denser and sinks. New water takes its place, gets cooled and sinks. This goes on until all the water in the lake has had a chance to be cooled to its maximum possible density—at 39 F (4 C)—and to sink. Only then can the surface water be cooled down those last seven degrees to form ice at 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

By the time a surface layer of ice can form on a lake, then, all the water in the lake will already be at a temperature of 39 degrees (4 C). No matter how cold the weather becomes, any water that stays colder than 39 degrees stays at the top (because it's lighter), and the fish below can never get any colder and freeze. That's another reason that water's peculiarities are responsible for permitting the existence of life on Earth.
Water gets lighter as it cools from 39 F to 32 F and is lightest as a solid: ice floats as we all know.

Freezing makes water float because it expands, heaviest density of wate is at 4C, so the 4c water falls to the bottom and cannot freeze.

Whatever you would like to believe. There are multiple reasons for why Lakes don't freeze. The concept that most bodies of water have movement which makes it tougher for the water to freeze, or you can talk about the mass of molecules that must reach the freezing point of water. But I guess you are all knowing, so who am I to question you.

Air cools faster then water does Helen, this coupled with the facts that ice floats, and that it works as an insulator keeping the enthalpy level relatively stable under neath the ice. The reason the water below the ice does not freeze is because it is being heating by the Earth's core, hence the reason why mountainous regions do not freeze completely.

you are no scientist if you can't remember the amazing anomaly of water to expand when it freezes. Most other chemicals shring in volume thus getting dense and will fall to the bottom. If water would behave like other molecules, the lakes would freeze from the bottom up

You asked about lakes, and how they do not freeze through. And I provided you with the correct answer. You merely gave the statistics for something I have already said. That Ice floats. Any idiot with 2 ice cubes and a glass of water could have figured that out. Clearly someone forgot that the Earth IN ALL AREAS gives off heat. And why don't you explain why the water at the bottom of lakes is so much cooler then the water towards the top? Maybe because it is not exposed to the elements, and the ice acts like a buffer, keeping the heat within the body of water. You really are a piece of work.
And the reason why water behaves differently then the majority of other molecules is due to its relatively high specific heat rate. Like you are trying to argue with me, and I have a chem book sitting right in front of me. It is pretty useless.

Those are not STATISTICS they are physical properties of water under normal atmospheric pressure at sea level.

How deep you have to go into the earth's crust to find head depends on the plates. Like hawaii boils water with lava flow at sea level.

I guess you guys just have never been anywhere near a person who knows a lot especially about natural science which was my hobby since I was 4 and able to read books on my own. In Finland, normal kids went to school when they were 7. My brother and I started school just before we were 5.

And I am sure you have heard the concept of insulation? That the top layer of ice insulates the underlying body of water? Again, the temperature of the Earth regulates the temperature of the water in between the Ice and the land underneath the water.

That was your only explanation for the occurrence we were discussing. Then you when you were wrong, you decided to change the conditions we were speaking of. Look online and you will see many things that back up exactly what I am saying. You merely touched on one aspect of the characteristics of water. Ice floats creating an insulated layer that keeps heat from dispersing out of the lake. And if there is motion, which most lakes have because they are fed by rivers, the fact that molecules are moving further decreases the chances of freezing. There are also aspects of the earths heat that gets dispersed into the water layers. You were pretty much correct. So is Helen, she just does not see that we are saying the same things regarding water's solid state. And she is ignorant to believe that that is the only thing that keeps water from freezing. Because given low enough temperatures water will freeze, water will also freeze if the temperature remains low for long enough periods of time. She is just acting like a 50 year old baby and needs to yell at everyone in order to try to get anything accomplished.
Helen seems to think she is the only person in the world who has had a successful life. Yet she shows no signs of an intelligent or well raised individual. She shows the signs of a spoiled brat who was never told that they were wrong. Who's "specialties" vary from day to day, always switching in accordance with the topic at hand. Honestly people like Helen don't bother me. I am just amazed that there are people who are that arrogant regarding some things. I will always admit it when I am proven wrong (though sometimes I make my last ditch effort last a little longer then it should) but if there is something I do not know, I will not hesitate to ask. Most Maine lakes are shallow enough and winter is long and cold enough, so that they freeze over. During some really cold winters, some lake ice can be as much as six feet thick!

This simple description does not give the technical description of how 4C water is heavier and will circulate to the bottom. As the water cools from 4C to 0C the water gets lighter and will freeze at the top. And you did know ice floats but I ADD IT HERE BECAUSE YOU MAY HAVE FORGOTTEN BY NOW.
