Better late than never...

India volcano roars back to life
A volcano has erupted and is spewing lava onto an island in India´s Andaman and Nicobar chain that was devastated by last week´s earthquake.
But officials say there is no cause for alarm, as the lava from the volcano on the uninhabited Barren Islands will flow into the sea.

The volcano has erupted three times in the last decade.

More than 800 people are known to have died in the tremor and tsunami on the islands, with thousands still missing.

Residents of Diglipur, a village on an island near the Barrens, reported seeing smoke and fumes rising from the volcano after the earthquake and tsunami waves.

A senior official of the Geological Survey of India, MM Mukherjee told the BBC that the eruption was minimal.

The volcano has been dormant since it last erupted in 1996, he said.

Submerged

A mud volcano in the Baratang Islands in Andaman also erupted after the earthquake, Mr Mukherjee said.

Mud volcanoes are the lesser known relatives of the more common magmatic variety. They are generally not considered to be dangerous.

The authorities have moved the villagers on the island away from the volcano.

The BBC´s Subir Bhaumik in the Andamans says the chain of islands have a number of dormant volcanoes.

Mr Mukherjee said some of then could become active in the aftermath of the massive earthquake - the world´s strongest for 40 years.

The earthquake and the tsunami submerged a number of islands in the Andamans.

They include Katchall, which shot into the news when thousands of tourists flocked there in the last week of 1999, to catch the first rays of the sun in the new millennium.

December chill the worst for 59 years

04.01.05
By REBECCA WALSH

Yes, it was a shocker.

Snow, frost, hail and a tornado marked the first month of summer, with the coldest temperatures recorded in December since 1945.

National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research figures for last month show it was the fifth coldest since records were established in 1853. The national average temperature was just 13.4C - 2.2C below normal and more like spring than summer.

The record-breaking low temperatures not only kept the summer clothes in the cupboard but slowed the growth and ripening of berries, stone fruit and crops.

Southerlies produced dramatic amounts of rain, with more than double normal rainfall in eastern regions from Hawkes Bay to Southland. Rainfall was also well above average in Auckland, Coromandel, Waikato, Ruapehu and Wanganui.

Despite that, less than three-quarters of average rainfall was recorded in sheltered parts of Fiordland and south Westland.

And if you thought there was a dire shortage of sun, there was.

Auckland recorded only 174 hours of sunshine - 83 per cent of the normal figure and the third lowest since records began in 1963.

Of the four main centres, Wellington was the sunniest and Christchurch the driest.

Niwa principal climate scientist Dr Jim Salinger said the above-average number of lows centred south of the Chatham Islands produced the strongest south-to-southwest airflow over New Zealand on record.

But don´t despair. Things are going to improve, apparently.

Dr Salinger said northern New Zealand could expect more westerly winds, more settled weather and warmer temperatures late this month and next. The large number of lows was unlikely to repeat itself in January.

"Last holiday period, Christmas and New Year were perfect. This year it has been the opposite," Dr Salinger said. "Each season plays itself out differently than the previous year. My expectation is that January will improve."

Cold and wet

Coldest December since 1945.

Lowest temperature of minus 3.7C recorded in Southland on the 20th.

Frost in inland areas of the North Island and the South Island.

Gale force southerlies brought hail to Auckland, Port Waikato, Hawkes Bay, Tasman and Canterbury.

Snow in the South Island to 600m and light snow on the Desert Road in the Central North Island.

Eastern regions from Hawkes Bay to Southland had more than double their normal rainfall.

Cyclone Raymond crosses WA coast
Tropical Cyclone Raymond has been downgraded after crossing the coast in the far north of Western Australia.

Cyclone Raymond skidded inland just to the west of the remote area of Kalumburu, in the Kimberley.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Grant Elliot says wind speeds reached up to 87 kilometres per hour but there have been no reports of damage.

"There are flood warnings current over much of the north Kimberley region but the tropical cyclone has now weakened below tropical cyclone strength and will gradually weaken over the next 24 to 36 hours," he said.

How animals escaped the Wave
By Annick Chapoy in Paris
January 04, 2005
MANY animals seem to have avoided the December 26 tsunami that swept the coastline of the Indian Ocean, thanks to acoustic senses that are far more advanced than humans´, say French zoologists.

Aerial pictures of Sri Lanka´s Yala National Park, broadcast on international TV news channels, show it was penetrated by surging floodwater.

But there were no signs of any dead elephants, leopards, deer, jackals and crocodiles, the species that have given the conservation reserve worldwide fame.

The footage adds to historic anecdotes about seismic waves, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, in which birds take flight, dogs howl and herd animals stampede to safety before catastrophe strikes.

If that is the case, the animals´ survival is unlikely to owe itself to some so-called sixth sense but to acuter hearing or some already known sense, experts say.

"In anything to do with vibrations, seismic shocks or sound waves, animals have capabilities which we do not," Herve Fritz, a researcher in animal behaviour at France´s National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), says.

"Elephants have infrasound communication. They can pick up these sounds at very great distances, from dozens of kilometres away."

Infrasound is the term for low-frequence noise, usually below 20 Hertz, that is below the human threshold of hearing.

Mr Fritz put forward two theories for explaining how elephants might have had early warning about the approaching wave: they could have picked up a "ground signature" of vibrations or an airborne noise, produced by the advancing behemoth, that was inaudible to humans.

Elephants are not alone in spotting a threat through vibration.

Rabbits and other four-footed creatures are able to sense early danger through the soil, and bats, which use a form of sonar, bouncing a sound signal off objects to locate their position, are believed to detect danger through the slight change in signal if an object vibrates.

Anne-Claude Gauthier, director of the Paris Zoo, points to other animals which have developed highly sophisticated, non-acoustic sensors.

They include the pigeon, which is very sensitive to changes in atmospheric pressure, and migrating birds and bees, which have a tiny but highly accurate internal compass that reacts to changes in Earth´s magnetic field.

Group animals such as elephants, deer and birds also have efficient "alarm codes" - special cries which enable the whole community to flee when a danger is spotted, Ms Gauthier said.

"Most land mammals are able to get out of difficulties in water if there is a crisis, such as crossing a flooded river," Mr Fritz added.

Just throwin out, trying to just put out I guess, some may say...

Instead of posting just the one, and maybe 4 threads that might not even get looked at, try to "save" and post all I can depending on what "digging" was done...
More in one... one for all? hehe

Just trying to see what the haps is, as ever... as ever keepin an eye on!
