1774: Louis XVI (Obama) ascends to the throne in the midst of financial turmoil. The previous King Louis XV (Bush) fought many wars and brought France to the brink of bankruptcy.

The only way out of bankruptcy was to repeal the tax exemptions of the first and second Estates (today's rich elite)

Directly from wikipedia:
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

"The social burdens caused by war included the huge war debt, made worse by the monarchy's military failures and ineptitude, and the lack of social services for war veterans.

The inefficient and antiquated financial system was unable to manage the national debt, something which was both caused and exacerbated by the burden of a grossly inequitable system of taxation. Another cause was the continued conspicuous consumption of the noble class, especially the court of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette at Versailles, despite the financial burden on the populace."

The anti-clerical sentiment of that time, which persists to this day as France is the most secular of all Western democracies, parallels today's repudiation of the bankers.
In 18th century France, the Church controlled the economy as they owned all the land. Today, the banks are the Church.

It's coming folks... all that remains is a 21st Century version of Bastille Day.

As Louis XVI was unable to solve his nation's problems, so too will our King.

I meant Presidents now are essentially kings in scope and power. I'm not an Obama fan.

The only difference between a Monarchy and Democracy is that the King's advisers rule instead of the King.
Countries switch back and forth every now and then to maintain the illusion of progress.
Policy is the same.

the poor and middle class didn't run up an absurd national debt threatening our currency.

The elite set up a highly leveraged system where only a small fraction of foreclosures could topple the entire system. The rates of foreclosures that started the crisis weren't even that high.

The people who set up this system and profited from brokering deals are the Marie Antoinette's and the Court of the King, driving Maserati's by making a killing creating credit derivatives that wrecked our economy.

And like the 3rd Estate in 1789, J6P is burdened with all the bailouts and taxes and loss of liberties to keep the failed system from imploding while the 1st and 2nd Estates get our money.

Wall Street is going to get stormed one of these days.

Yes. I have noticed some amazing similarities.

Along with that "edge of the precipice" feeling.
