Well...let me tell you what's going on from what I can see.

I took a walk down one of the main avenues, everything is burnt and scarred. My first impression was "why do people rip apart the sidewalks?" Piles of concrete and marble is everywhere. (Of course people use them as weapons...).

Many bus stops are charred. Piles of broken glass everywhere...any store that was a franchise of sort; is now but a mere burnt skeleton. Banks, utterly destroyed. Anything to do with electronics; destroyed. Pieces of cars. Strange piles of burnt plastic looking things.

I saw some rebuilding, some huge construction Spartan-like guys, clearing up rubble and looking at people daringly as if to fuck with them. That at least, brought a smile to my face. Let's rebuild.

I thought about taking pictures, but I felt it would be disrespectful. Much like walking down Manhattan after 9/11.

The atmosphere is thick with sadness.

UPDATES:

*The Communist leader has called for a gathering at 6pm.

*Students have occupied the Universities.

*Schools all over the country are at unrest.

*Greek radio reports that government is preparing to deal with provocateurs tonight.

********************************************

*THE ENTIRE GREEK GOVERNMENT IS MEETING RIGHT NOW.

*Rumors on the radio right now of Martial Law.

*Police are letting people riot in hopes they will "release all their anger" and the situation will die out. HOWEVER THEY HAVE SAID THAT IF PEOPLE DON'T CALM DOWN, THE MILITARY WILL BE DEPLOYED.

*******************************************
Government appeared on TV and said the following:

GREEKS SHOULD BE THINKING ABOUT WHO CAUSED THESE RIOTS AND WHAT THEY STAND FOR, WHAT THEY ARE BEHIND.

THE GREEK GOVERNMENT STANDS BEHIND DEMOCRACY AND WILL STAND FIRM BEHIND IT.

My Greek is not that good, so please if somebody is fluent, correct me where I am wrong.

This is a translation from a highly controversial web site in Greece.

"There is high pressure toward the ballistic department of the Police Department, to falsify the results of the firing conditions. There are suspicions of a sniper involvement to ignite the situation. It is vital for the reports to prove as to if the bullet came from the guard's gun or from another weapon"

"Verified information reports that the two special guards of the police -responsible for the death of the young boy- are threatened by several high ranked members of the police. It is said that should they reveal the truth, there will be retribution against their own families".

"A member of the group that shot 16-year-old was with, was arrested and found carrying a shotgun (Saturday night)".

"In 1985, 15-year-old Michael Kalentzas was killed by police fire. No riots and no destruction took place, due to the presence of PASOK's in the government seats".

"Whenever PASOK is not in power, and the polls show political uncertainty, violence and destruction takes place in Greece. This happens in order to shift the public opinion against the seated government and cause premature elections."

Why are they rioting?
"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their money, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them, will deprive the people of their property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered." -Thomas Jefferson

"This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or their revolutionary right to dismember it or overthrow it."

There was a shooting the other night....a group of kids attacked a police offer's car while he was patrolling the area. A cop shot one of the boys.

I keep hearing different versions of this story, I don't think anybody really knows what happened.

There is also the clashing of political parties....but that is another story.

maybe you'll relax later-just a shock to your system. Sounds like the cops have an ass kicking coming to them. You can't go around shooting people and not expect blowback, maybe even a civil war if the people have a lot of suppressed rage. That even your economy is affected by the global slow down could be one more reason for the tempers, but it doesn't alter the fact that the offense has been commited and genuine justice should have been done. In short screw the cops if they did this without appropriate cause!

Sounds like a non-NWO orchestrated spontaneous event. Nada on drudge or CNN headline news.

There's gotta be more to it than just a single killing.

Wonder if its a Rodney King riot or bona fide revolution.

I wish I could argue with you, but I'm so pissed off at seeing the self-destruction of a country I have come to love dearly as my second home.....one person gets killed so we kill ten to revolt? Logic in this? None. To solve a problem, would it not be better to cut the head off the snake?

Re: GREEK RIOTS: Greek protesters seize TV studio
ATHENS, Greece (CNN) -- Hundreds of young self-styled anarchists rioted in the streets Sunday and attacked police in several Greek cities in a fury over the shooting death of a teenager by a member of an elite police corps.

The shooting on Saturday night triggered demonstrations and violence across the country, which had not abated by Sunday.

"It at first seemed like it was calming down today, but then at 5 p.m. Athens time it kicked off again," said Joel Brown, a CNN senior press officer visiting Athens. "There are lots of burning bins and debris in the street and a huge amount of tear gas in the air, which we got choked with on the way back to our hotel."

Tourists holed up in downtown Athens hotels were told by hotel staff not to leave their rooms as police fanned out across the city, Brown said.

The U.S. and British embassies issued warnings to employees and tourists on Sunday, instructing them to avoid downtown Athens and other major cities until rioting subsides.

The police officer who fired the fatal shot has been charged with "manslaughter with intent" and suspended from duty, police said, adding that a second police officer was arrested Saturday on criminal accessory charges.

Demonstrators barricaded city streets Sunday in Athens and Thessaloniki and hurled petrol bombs as they battled with police, who fought back with tear gas in the second day of rioting. Video Watch youths riot in Greece »

Rampaging youths smashed storefronts and burned businesses, leaving shattered glass and burnt debris scattered across both cities.

Residents of an apartment building in central Athens were evacuated on Sunday after angry demonstrators torched a car dealership on the basement floor.

A police statement about the boy's death said the incident started when six young protesters pelted a police patrol car with stones. The 16-year-old boy was shot as he tried to throw a fuel-filled bomb at the officers, police said.

Other youths converged on the site almost immediately.

These young people -- often referred to in Greece as " the known-unknowns" -- use texting and Web sites to organize and communicate.

Fighting between youths and police quickly erupted in other parts of Greece, including Thessaloniki, the country's second largest city. Hundreds of youths took to the streets of the sprawling port city, and finally barricaded themselves behind the gates of a state university, where police are barred from entering.

No deaths were reported, though police say several police officers have been injured. iReport.com: Are you there? Share photos, video of rioting

Police say some protesters have been rounded up for questioning.

Government officials, fearing more violence, swiftly condemned the shooting.

"An investigation is under way and those found responsible with be punished," said Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos. "Measures will also be taken to avoid such incidents again in the future."
