Things that will refocus the world back to Israel and Jerusalem till He comes back.
Fair use:

Backed by Fatah´s formidable machine, Abbas was nearly assured of victory well before the vote when his toughest competition, jailed uprising leader Marwan Barghouti, pulled out and the largest opposition group, Hamas, declared a boycott.

FU&FW:

DEBKAfile’s intelligence sources report real exit figures estimated in Washington and Jerusalem as 49-52% win for Abbas, 30-32% for runner-up Barghouti and no more than 45-48% turnout rather than 65%, largest proportion of which cast in two hours added to end of balloting to pump up figures. Barghouti claims to emerge as head of second largest Palestinian faction after Fatah and before Hamas.

Orderly vote count broke down, some ballot boxes never counted or reached Ramallah central election center. Final results will be announced Monday.

It´s interesting news, but available on any major news site. And your title is rather... lopsided.

However, I´m glad to see you´ve finally hit upon the actual meaning of "fair use." :) Kudos!

Saudi, Egyptian Leaders Pull the Democracy Rug from Under Washington

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report

January 9, 2005, 7:44 PM (GMT+02:00)

Iraq`s interior minister Falah Hassan Naqib gets brushoff from Arab colleagues in Tunis

Moderate Arab leaders aimed a damaging broadside at key US-sponsored election ventures, the more painful for its timing in the month when ballots were scheduled both in the Palestinian Authority and Iraq. It was fired inconspicuously by 21 Arab interior ministers gathered in Tunis last week and acted as a rude snub to the Bush administration’s diplomatic efforts to recruit Arab friends for help in bringing reluctant Iraqi Sunni voters to the January 30 poll.

Present at the conference from Sunday to Wednesday, January 2-5, in addition to the ministers, were Middle East and Persian Gulf chiefs of intelligence, police and domestic security in the Middle East and Persian Gulf, as well as outside counter-terror experts, including Americans.

DEBKAfile’s Washington sources report that, ahead of the event, Saudi and Egyptian governments promised Washington and Baghdad to initiate motions expressly condemning Iraqi terrorism and throwing a supportive mantle over the two January elections. What happened in Tunis left the Americans astonished and outraged by what they saw as a betrayal by their purported Arab friends. The key resolution said: “Arab interior ministers condemned all terrorist acts in Iraq targeting Iraqi security agents and the Iraqi police, as well as businesses and public, economic, humanitarian and religious institutions.” There was not a single cross word for the acts of violence against American troops or coalition allies.

This omission went down with Bush administration officials as not far short of a pan-Arab license to kill non-Iraqis, namely Americans and its allied forces.

Sunday, January 9, US embassy officials met with Iraqi’s supreme Muslim Council to ask them to revoke the order to Sunnis to boycott the election. The clerics offered to grant this wish on condition that the United States set a date for its departure from Iraq.

Adding fuel to the fire, Saudi interior minister Prince Nayef called a news conference after the event to pull out the old chestnut of another intractable conflict: “The Palestinians are not engaged in a war of terror,” he said, “but self-defense.”

This absolution for Palestinian terrorism could not have come at a worst time for American plans. An end to the Palestinian terror campaign against Israel is the key to a return to the peace map and the success of Mahmoud Abbas, whose election as Arafat’s successor, was expected Sunday, January 9, in negotiating a path to Palestinian statehood. Authoritative endorsement of Palestinian violence from a purportedly pro-American, moderate Arab League leader put the lid on the already faint prospect of the new Palestinian leader dealing with the violence.

Iraqi interim interior minister Falah Hassan Naqib tried reminding Prince Nayef and Egyptian foreign minister Habib al-Adli of their commitment. He was brushed aside. The independent draft he tabled denouncing terrorist attacks on US and allied forces was vetoed.

DEBKAfile’s Washington sources add that the administration views the performance of its Arab friends at Tunis as one of the most painful contretemps it has suffered in the war on global terror and a grave setback to its aspirations to lead the Middle East to stable democratic government, starting with the Palestinians and moving on to Iraq. President Bush and vice president Dick Cheney are reported fuming as never before, their ire directed at Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the powerful Saudi interior minister and the Egyptian foreign minister. They are now trying to find out in Riyadh if Nayef acted with or without approval from Crown Prince Abdullah in spearheading with Adli an Arab League measure that adds up to the virtual legalization of terrorist acts that are not directed against fellow Arabs.

This pan-Arab seal of legitimacy extends well beyond the bruising day-to-day conflicts to the dangerous erosion of authority developing in the three terror-bound arenas struggling for stability: Afghanistan, Iraq and the Palestinian Authority.

In those places, two-headed power bases are emerging. The US-approved central governments, which are too feeble to come to grips with the terrorists, and the hostile paramilitary forces which have dug their claws into the country and control it by violence.

The pattern of this emerging mortal symbiosis varies according to local conditions:

Afghanistan: Elected president Hamid Karzai rules sections of the capital Kabul. The rest of the country is largely in the grip of tribal leaders and paramilitary militias who are in semi-overt league with Taliban and al Qaeda elements.

Iraq: Prime minister Iyad Allawi lacks the military muscle or even the prospect of a local army capable of fighting hostile guerrilla and terrorist enemies and asserting control of Iraq. His regime is completely dependent on US, British and other coalition armies and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Neither the interim government in Baghdad nor the Americans can guarantee elections will take place in all of Iraq’s 18 provinces. Therefore, the prime minister and the Americans have engaged Sunni leaders in exile in covert negotiations, among them guerrilla chiefs, to get them to lift their boycott against the January 30 vote. These talks do not even begin to reach the point of demanding a halt of the attacks. If anything, their effect is to exacerbate the violence besetting Iraq and prejudice the election. Wooing the insurgents’ Sunni supporters rewards them with legitimacy and correspondingly reduces their incentive for coming to terms with elected government. Hence, the negative response from the supreme Muslim council of Iraq to the American bid to waive the voting prohibition.

Terrorism will therefore most probably persist after the elections too. The effect of pan-Arab endorsement for the Sunni opponents of the regime will be to harden and radicalize their resistance to central government and their refusal to enter into any accommodation.

The Arab League ministers in Tunis put paid to any hope US diplomats might have entertained of mobilizing even a partial Sunni vote.

The Palestinian Authority: It did not take Washington, Jerusalem or European governments long to discover that Mahmoud Abbas, aka Abu Mazen, is not made of the stuff needed to take on the Hamas and al Aqsa Brigades terrorists or impose a drastic reform program on the corrupt, shambolic Palestinian administration.

Fatah, Tanzim, al Aqsa Brigades and Hamas tacticians know him much longer as the late Yasser Arafat’s long-serving deputy. They opted for the reverse strategy to Iraqi insurgents; instead of boycott and assault, they enfolded Abu Mazen in a bear hug which binds him hand and foot, the while carrying on with their attacks on Israel undisturbed. His three weeks of campaigning saw the Fatah candidate ground down to acceptance of their ways.

As a result, whereas Iraqi insurgents do everything in their power to destroy the Allawi regime, Palestinian terrorists cherish Abu Mazen and will hold him to his pre-election promise to shield them from the “Zionist enemy.”

The Palestinian election is therefore expected by DEBKAfile’s counter-terror and Palestinian experts to produce the Palestinian version of the two-headed power-base: one head engaged in diplomatic bargaining with the Americans, the Europeans and, from time to time, the Israelis – after squeezing out concessions for every meeting; the second head, the Palestinians’ terrorist wing, will continue to strike Israel, egged on by an updated pan-Arab blessing from Tunis.

Your other charges sound rather jesuitical to me, perhaps you charge me with your own offense? Or maybe you seek to get a rise out of me, whatever, you will not stop me or change the personal relationship i have with my Friend , Lord , Saviour God and Master, YHVH/Yah/shua(called by many jesus) and the fact of His word.

"Anti-Semitism, the Church, and the Last Days"

Anti-Semitism, the Church, and the Last Days

With anti-Semitism continuing to rise throughout the world, the outlook for tiny Israel for the next year is, at best, bleak.

Increasingly, Israel is being portrayed as an aggressor and occupier of stolen lands -- and that criticism comes from Israel´s friends. Israel´s enemies are nowhere near so kind in their assessment.

According to Israel´s former Chief Rabbi, Meir Lau, anti-Semitism is on the rise in nearly every European country - expressed, among other ways, via extreme anti-Israel sentiments, cemetery desecration, and physical attacks on Jews.

Many Jewish families he had met said that they live in fear. "I´ve met parents who tell me that when they send their children to Bnei Akiva (a religious-Zionist youth movement) for evening activities they are in constant fear that something terrible will happen, G-d forbid, until they return.

"Once Jews had no choice but to live with anti-Semitism. Now they do."

Lau noted recent polls conducted throughout Europe that say the majority of Europeans consider Israel the "greatest danger to world peace in the world today."

Not the Arab countries that are dedicated to its annihilation, but Israel.

It is an equivalent absurdity to convicting an assault victim of assault and awarding the perpetrator a crime victim damage award for having scraped his knuckles on the victim´s teeth.

This can only happen to Jews.

The Germans gassed more than six million Jews during the Second World War, in camps throughout Europe, with the enthusiastic cooperation of many of the countries it occupied during the war.

But a recent poll conducted in Germany found that 62% of Germans are tired of hearing about the Holocaust and that 70% get angry when the subject comes up. Half of those in the German survey believe Israeli treatment of the Palestinians is similar to Nazi behavior towards the Jews during the war.

51 percent of respondents said that there is not much of a difference between what Israel is doing to the Palestinians today and what the Nazis did to the Jews during the Holocaust. The survey also found that 68 percent of Germans believe that Israel is waging a "war of extermination" against the Palestinians.

In a recent London Telegraph poll, Israel won first prize for being the country Britons would least like to visit. Israel swept the board, showing up among the five countries Britons identified as the worst place to live, the least democratic, the least friendly, the least beautiful and the least safe. Overall, the only place worse than Israel in all categories was Russia.

(In the category of ´least safe´, Israel came in second. The United States came in first.)

Less than half of Britons queried could identify the significance of Auschwitz. An Irish Nobel Peace Laureate compared Israel´s nuclear arsenal to Hitler´s gas chambers during a recent visit to the Jewish State.

There are just over a million Jews left in Europe, sixty years after the camps were liberated. Rabbi Lau said he expects that number to dwindle down to nothing.

"I see the end of the Diaspora of Jews in Europe," said Lau, himself a Holocaust survivor. He called on Israel "to prepare for a new phase of the spiritual and physical absorption of European Jewry before they consider emigrating to the Unites States or Australia."

"In the past months I´ve traveled to Austria, Britain, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands, and I´m telling you there is no future for European Jewry," said Lau in a telephone interview with The Jerusalem Post.

Coming to America won´t necessarily protect Jews from anti-Semitism. Columbia University is investigating charges of anti-Semitism leveled against a number of its professors, including one who told students that the word ´Zion´ was Hebrew for ´penis´. (´Zion´ means ´signpost´).

Columbia´s Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures Department chairman, Hamid Dabashi, teaches that Israel is a racist state that does not have a right to exist.

He teaches American students that Israel does not represent the Jews and has called for a "one-state solution" to the Middle East conflict.

Palestinians have lost international support, he wrote in 2003, because Yasser Arafat has made too many concessions to Israel and has tried to suppress the intifada.

Students who object to such propaganda are shouted down by the prof, who questioned his portrayal of the Battle of Jenin as an Israeli ´massacre´.

According to witnesses, he shouted down one female student saying, "I will not have anyone sit through this class and deny Israeli atrocities. "

During his campaign, former presidential candidate Ralph Nader branded the Bush administration and the Republican majority in Congress as ´puppets of the Israeli government´, saying, "The days when the chief Israeli puppeteer comes to the United States and meets with the puppet in the White House and then proceeds to Capitol Hill, where he meets with hundreds of other puppets, should be replaced."

In Melbourne, Australia, a government-funded art exhibit displayed a large Star of David painted on a wall. Red text over the emblem of Israel reads:

"Since the creation of Israel in 1948. 200,000 Palestinians have been killed. 5,000,000 refugees have been created. 21,000 square kilometers of land has been annexed. 385 towns and villages have been destroyed. 300 billion military dollars have been spent. 100+ Wad’s have been manufactured. 65 UN resolutions have been ignored."

Anti-Semitism is also on the rise in Canada, which has some of the strongest hate-speech laws in North America. In Canada, one can be charged with hate-speech for saying homosexual conduct is wrong and violates God´s law, for example. The Bible itself qualifies as ´hate-literature.´

But Statistics Canada surveyed Canada´s 12 largest police forces and determined that ´most likely victims´ of hate crimes continue to be the Jews. Fully one quarter of all hate crimes investigated are anti-Semitic in nature.

Canadian Foreign Minister Bill Graham admitted in an interview with Canada´s ´Jewish News´ that, "Canada has had to confront the reality of disgraceful attacks on our Jewish community, including hateful graffiti, vandalism, the desecration of cemeteries and the firebombing of a Jewish elementary school," calling attacks against Jews and Jewish interests a growing ´trend´.

The Canadian government, as noted, vigorously prosecutes hate crimes. Yet, even in multilingual, multiculturalist, immigrant-friendly, ethnically diverse Canada, anti-Semitism is a GROWING trend.

And Kofi Annan´s top advisor, Lakhdar Brahimi, recently compared Ariel Sharon to "an assassin" and urged the Europeans to "increase their pressure on Israel."

Brahimi called Israel´s position on peace with the Palestinians "cynical and ridiculous" forcing Kofi Annan, through a spokesman, to ´distance himself´ from his top advisor.

In a non-statement that explained nothing, the UN spokesman said Brahimi was speaking in ´his personal capacity´ and that Annan´s views on the Middle East are ´well-known´.

Indeed they are. Annan is decidedly anti-Israel.

As noted in a previous issue of the Omega Letter, there isn´t a dime´s worth of difference between the new leader of the Palestinian people, Mahmoud Abbas, and their old leader, Yasser Arafat.

For all the flowery rhetoric about Abbas being a ´new hope´ for peace, the only hope he actually offers is that he isn´t Yasser Arafat.

Israel and the United States had long since refused to negotiate with Arafat. Since Abbas is the new guy, they have to negotiate with him until he proves himself as dedicated to terrorism as Arafat was.

So Israeli citizens can expect more of the same, but will have to endure it until both they and the United States are forced to reject Abbas as well.

Assessment:

The Bible says that eventually, control of the peace process will be wrested away from the United States, who will be replaced by a European leader that will come up with a satisfactory security guarantee for Israel and seemingly solve the Arab-Israeli conflict.

In that context, Javier Solana´s ´Euromed Project´ (see "Javier Solana, Europe´s Uber Fuhrer?" Omega Letter Volume 39: Issue: 7) intends to include Israel into a EU-Mediterranean ´free trade zone´ for the specific purpose of affording leverage over Israel in the peace process.

When Ariel Sharon objected to European ´interference´, Solana told the world, "We play a role, whether our good friend Mr. Shalom would like it or not."

Among the most remarkable prophecies in the Bible concerning Israel is the constant theme of anti-Semitism.

The prophet Hosea prophesied that the Jews would become ´wanderers among the nations.´ (Hosea 9:17), 2,000 years before Shakespeare coined the phrase ´wandering Jew´.

"Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us. Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people." (Psalms 44:14-15)

God told Solomon, "But if ye shall at all turn from following Me, ye OR YOUR CHILDREN, and will not keep My commandments and My statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them: Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for My Name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:" (1st Kings 9:6-7)

Deuteronomy 28 is divided into blessings and curses. The blessings are conditional upon Israel keeping God´s commandments, and the curses are pronounced on Israel for violating them.

"And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone."

"And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:"

"And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life:" (Deuteronomy 28:65-66)

The purpose for Israel´s cursing is not to punish Israel so much as to prove God to the Gentile nations.

"And at this house, which is high, every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and to this house? And they shall answer, Because they forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil." (1 Kings 9:8-9)

The nation of Israel is called ´God´s Chosen People´ because God chose to reveal Himself to us through the Jews. God spoke to mankind through the Hebrew prophets. God chose to manifest Himself in the flesh as a Jew named Jesus Christ.

God chose His people to suffer affliction, so that we would realize that no nation could be so cursed apart from Divine sentence.

And God chose His people to serve as His ensign in the last days, to prove Himself to the heathen by restoring them to their ancient land in the last days, as He promised.

The Jews are an unspeakable gift to the Gentiles, directly from God. The Church owes them a profound debt of gratitude.

Allow me to offer a profound challenge to conventional wisdom concerning Israel and her relationship to God, the Church, and Israel´s national salvation.

Were it not for the Jews, there would be no salvation for the Gentiles, neither would the Gentiles know a perceived need FOR salvation.

As Paul writes; "For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died." (Romans 7:9)

Without the Law, there would be no way to measure sin, and no need to seek redemption.

Paul, himself a Pharisee, explained a new ´mystery´ concerning Israel, writing:

"For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in." (Romans 11:25)

The ´mystery´ revealed by Paul is that God has deliberately blinded Israel to the true Identity of their Messiah so that the Church might have their chance to be adopted into God´s forever family.

Many in the Church resent Israel´s designation as God´s Chosen People, instead claiming that title was transferred to the Church.

They missed the ´mystery´ and instead, became ´wise in their own conceits.´

Paul notes that this blindness will continue through to the end of the age, at which time, Paul notes,

"And so all Israel SHALL BE SAVED: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:" (Romans 11:26)

God says of Israel´s national salvation: "For this is My covenant unto them, when I SHALL TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS."

Paul explains, "As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are BELOVED FOR THE FATHER´S SAKES. For the gifts and calling of God are WITHOUT REPENTANCE."

Note Paul´s next words carefully:

"For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: Even so have these [the Jews] also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy."

And here is the blockbuster passage: "For God hath concluded them ALL in unbelief, that He might have mercy upon ALL." (Romans 11:25-32)

When one considers these passages, it makes anti-Semitism all the more cruel when it comes from within Christianity.

Consider the actions of the Jews at the Crucifixion. What if they HAD accepted Jesus as Messiah? Would the Church Age have ever happened? Would YOU have had a chance to be eternally saved?

Clearly, the Crucifixion was part of God´s Plan, and as such, so were its participants. It HAD to happen, and it HAD to happen at the hands of the Jews who lived at that time and place.

So, also did twenty-five hundred years of anti-Semitism, pogroms, persecutions and unspeakable atrocities committed against Jews in the Name of God. Jesus knew that.

"They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service." (John 16:2)

At the Cross, looking down at those who were unwitting participants in a Divine Plan, He said, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." (Luke 23:34)

Paul says that Christians are extended mercy and forgiveness BECAUSE of Israel´s unbelief, and that, in the last days, ALL Israel shall be saved as a consequence, that ´through your mercy they [the Jews] also may obtain mercy.´

Note the distinction. We are forgiven when we come TO the Cross, but Jesus forgave the Jews AT the Cross, by His own Sovereign Act of Divine Will, because they are "beloved for the Father´s sake".

Israel has suffered mightily on our behalf, so that we might have our opportunity to be saved. But God has not forgotten His people.

The Tribulation Period is the time of ´Jacob´s Trouble´. It is the time when God passes judgment on a Christ-rejecting world and uses the unrestrained global persecution of Israel to bring about the national salvation of Israel.

Since the Church is neither Christ-rejecting nor, by definition, in need of further salvation, the Church has no role to play during the Tribulation Period.

The Church´s role is to restrain the tide of evil until that time when "that Wicked shall be revealed" as part of God´s plan for Israel´s national redemption. Then comes the Rapture.

And after that, the Tribulation. And finally, the national redemption of Israel and the beginning of the Millennial Kingdom.

"And so all Israel SHALL BE SAVED . . . For this is My covenant unto THEM, when I SHALL TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS. . . For the gifts and calling of God are WITHOUT REPENTANCE."

Praise the Lord! Israel´s national redemption is at hand. So is the Rapture.

"And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh." (Luke 21:28)

Jesus came back over a hundread years ago and called the whole world to accept him but they refused and have attacked him. That´s why God will establish the truth he proclaimed over a hundred years ago with powerful assults.

You who believe that the first Jesus will come back. I inform you that he died a natural death and was buried and will never come back because it would contradict the laws of God. A person came a hundred years ago made the claim and powerful miracles were witnessed by people around him. Two top British Bishops went to India and challenged him. And as the English papers printed "the bishops were utterly defeated and came back to England like two dogs with their tails between their legs".

It is time you stop following Paul and come back to the TRUTH. One GOD not THREE. Read the first commandment!!!!

Believe in all the prophets of God, if you reject one then you have rejected the lot and God will reject you!

Re: Things that will refocus the world back to Israel and Jerusalem till He comes back.
Last week I spoke by telephone with a Polish journalist recently returned from the former Soviet republic of Ukraine. “I have to tell you that a closer look helped me to discern the process better,” he said, noting that the pro-Western candidate, Victor Yushchenko, “served in the KGB of the Soviet Union in a military camp on the Turkish-Soviet border (1975/76).” My Polish correspondent also noted that: “Yushchenko is surrounded by many people of Soviet thinking who block media access to him and do not want to be involved in any discussion.”

Sharansky realized that the warden of the KGB prison at Lefortovo was lying to him about the punishment cells. And this is not the only lie. It is not the only deception. Recent elections in Ukraine, like the 2004 elections in Georgia and Russia, were not as advertised: “I came back [from Ukraine] as a pessimist,” my Polish friend explained. “It seems to me that sweet grapes may become sour very soon.” Candidates are not always what they seem. Elections are not always free or fair. And yet, all too often the West is willing to accept sham democracy in place of the real thing. It is shameful, indeed, that the West believed Stalin’s lies in the 1930s. It is equally shameful when a former American president, like Jimmy Carter, declares that the aspiring communist tyrant of Venezuela was fairly elected. Now Carter heads the committee overseeing the January 9 Palestinian election, cynically placing the West’s stamp of approval on yet another candidate of dubious distinction, Mahmoud Abbas (a.k.a. Abu Mazen) – the newly elected president of the Palestinian Authority. Abbas does not favor freedom in the Western sense. He got his Ph.D. from a Soviet university. His doctoral dissertation was published as a book, subtitled “The Secret Relationship Between Nazism and Zionism.” It is a book that casts doubt on the claim that Jews were exterminated in Nazi gas chambers, putting the number of Jews killed by Hitler at less than a million.

At least six Israelis have died and several others have been wounded in an attack by Palestinian militants at a crossing point between Israel and Gaza.

A truck was rammed through a wall and three militants charged through the gap, the Israeli army says.

Israeli security guards returned fire and the three militants were killed.

Joint responsibility for the raid was claimed by three Palestinian groups, including one linked to the Fatah movement of President Mahmoud Abbas.

It is the first big attack since Mr Abbas was elected on Sunday and could be his first major test as leader.

Israel has called on Mr Abbas to go after those responsible for the attack.

Blow for Abbas

Mr Abbas has said previously he would not take on Palestinian armed groups by force, and instead wanted to persuade them to agree to a mutual ceasefire with Israel.

Following the attack, Israeli Transport Minister Meir Sheetrit said the crossing, which is the main commercial entry point for the Gaza Strip and vital for channelling supplies to the 1.3 million Palestinians who live there, would be closed until further notice.

The BBC´s Alan Johnston in Gaza says the involvement of Fatah-linked al-Aqsa Martyrs´ Brigades in the latest assault will be a blow to Mr Abbas.

It shows that even some of the militants in his own political camp do not agree that it is time to halt the violence, our correspondent adds.

Shortly after the incident, an Israeli helicopter fired two missiles at a building in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, said to belong to the Islamic Jihad militant group.

The Israeli army says in Thursday´s attack, the truck was rammed through a wall at the crossing and then three Palestinian militants ran through, firing their weapons and hurling explosives.

Israeli security guards returned fire and the militants were killed.

The heavy exchanges prevented ambulances from reaching those wounded in the bomb attack.

Some reports say the Israelis killed were all civilians.

Withdrawal

As well as the al-Aqsa Martyrs´ Brigades, the Islamic militant group Hamas and the Popular Resistance Committees said they were involved in carrying out the attack.

Karni is the main crossing point for farm produce and other goods entering and leaving the Gaza Strip.

It was said to be relatively quiet when the attack took place, at around 2300 local time (2100 GMT).

The attack followed Israeli raids in the Gaza Strip earlier on Thursday in which two Palestinians were killed.

One man died as he drove his pregnant neighbour to hospital in Beit Lahiya. The other was killed in an Israeli raid on the Bureij refugee camp.

Israel, which has occupied Gaza since 1967, is planning to withdraw its troops and settlers from the territory this year.

But our correspondent says groups like Hamas are very keen to portray the Israeli withdrawal as a retreat under fire.
