Depressive personality disorder

Depressive personality disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis that denotes a personality disorder with depressive features. It is a controversial disorder described in an appendix to the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-IV-TR as worthy of further study. It is not listed in the manual's personality disorder category.

Diagnostic criteria (DSM-IV-TR)

The DSM-IV-TR, a widely used manual for diagnosing mental disorders, defines depressive personality disorder as:

A pervasive pattern of depressive cognitions and behaviors beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated as five (or more) of the following:

* usual mood is dominated by dejection, gloominess, cheerlessness, joylessness, unhappiness

* self-concept centers around beliefs of inadequacy, worthlessness, and low self-esteem

* is critical, blaming, and derogatory toward self
* is brooding and given to worry

* is negativistic, critical, and judgmental towards others

* is pessimistic

* is prone to feeling guilty or remorseful

* does not occur exclusively during Major Depressive Episodes and is not better accounted for by dysthymia.

ISTJ Under Stress

When their skills at maintaining the structures that they believe hold up society fall short of achieving the security they are striving toward, ISTJs become tired and weary. If the stress becomes overwhelming, ISTJs become immobilized and cannot fill the responsibilities that they consider necessary for rightful membership within their community. They become incapacitated by concerns of a bankruptcy. ISTJs may then further increase their attention on the details of the situation that is causing them stress. This sometimes results in accusations by those around them that the ISTJ is becoming over-demanding, irritable, inflexible, and impatient with others.

Fearing the breakdown of a trustworthy system and dreading becoming an outcast, the ISTJ may feel like energy is being drained from their bodies. Fatigue will set in and it will be exacerbated by a loss of sleep and of appetite. Depleted of their resources, ISTJs will be unable to meet many of their obligations or fulfill their duties to their work and to others. Not being able to fulfill this basic need, the ISTJ becomes further stressed and almost incapacitated by listlessness -making it all the more difficult be responsive to others.

I don't think that's my personality. I am a self-diagnosed manic depressive (my mom has been diagnosed as manic and bipolar) and I am usually a fun person, always making jokes, making the best of any situation. Never been told I seem depressed.

It doesn't mean that you are depressed

It means that if you were to lose your mind and go nutz, or if you were under extreme stress; that is what would happen to you.

Cyclothymia is a mood disorder. This disorder is a milder form of bipolar II disorder consisting of recurrent mood disturbances between hypomania and dysthymic mood. A single episode of hypomania is sufficient to diagnose cyclothymic disorder; however, most individuals also have dysthymic periods. The diagnosis of cyclothymic disorder is never made when there is a history of mania or major depressive episode or mixed episode (as told in "Blueprints in Psychiatry" - "mood disorders"). The lifetime prevalence of cyclothymic disorder is 0.4-1%. The rate appears equal in men or women, though women more often seek treatment.

Symptoms

* During the first two years of the disorder, the patient has not fulfilled enough criteria to qualify as having either bipolar disorder or major depressive disorder.

* Symptoms are present for at least two years: periods of hypomanic symptoms and periods of low mood that do not fulfill the criteria for major depressive disorder.

* The longest period the patient has been free of symptoms is two months.

* The disorder cannot be better explained as schizoaffective disorder, and it is not superimposed on schizophrenia, schizophreniform disorder, delusional disorder or psychotic disorder not otherwise specified.

* Symptoms are not directly caused by a general medical condition or the use of any substances such as prescription medicines.

* The symptoms cause the patient clinically significant distress or impair work, social or personal functioning.

* A person with this disorder may experience euphoric highs, boosts of energy and require less sleep in one phase, followed by a severe mood swings into a depressive state coupled with negativity & sadness for no particular reason.

* These mood swings are not as severe as bipolar I disorder or bipolar II disorder.

* Cyclothymia is to bipolar disorder as Dysthymia (a mild form of clinical depression) is to major depressive disorder.

ISFP Under Stress

ISFPs can be over-accepting of others and need to be more skeptical at times. Their need to please everyone makes them reluctant to critique any one but themselves. This excessive desire to trust others makes them targets for hurt feelings and disadvantaged relationships. Long-range planning and adherence to policies can be their downfall. When the freedom to act on their instincts is limited, ISFPs become bored, restless, and passively defiant. They are skilled at seeming to comply with regulations while annoying those who cause them distress.

If stress continues to build, ISFPs will penalize others through self-degrading behavior. This behavior has the tendency to divert accountability away from themselves and onto others who they blame for their plight. This restores the excitement back into ISFP's lives while at the same time getting even with their accused oppressors. Rationalizing their responsibilities, stressed-out ISFPs attempt to find their way out of unstimulating circumstances through seeking inappropriate thrills.

Cyclothymic Personality Disorder

PTypes Personality Types proposes Cyclothymic Personality Disorder as a pervasive pattern of pronounced periodic changes in mood, behavior, thinking, sleep, and energy levels, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by seven (or more) of the following:

* has depressive periods: depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities and pastimes alternating with hypomanic periods: elevated, expansive, or irritable mood (American Psychiatric Association, 1980, pg. 220);

* becomes excessively involved in pleasurable activities with lack of concern for the high potential of painful consequences alternating with restriction of involvement in pleasurable activities and guilt over past activities (pg. 220);

* alternates between over-optimism or exaggeration of past achievement and a pessimistic attitude toward the future, or brooding about past events (pg. 220);

* is more talkative than usual, with inappropriate laughing, joking, and punning: and, then, less talkative, with tearfulness or crying (pg. 220);

* has a decreased need for sleep alternating with hypersomnia (Akiskal, Khani, and Scott-Strauss qtd. in Jamison, pg. 264); 1

* has shaky self-esteem: naive grandiose overconfidence alternating with lack of self-confidence (pg. 264);

* has periods of sharpened and creative thinking alternating with periods of mental confusion and apathy (pg. 264);

* displays marked unevenness in the quantity and quality of productivity, often associated with unusual working hours (pg. 264);

* engages in uninhibited people-seeking (that may lead to hyper-sexuality) alternating with introverted self-absorption (pg. 264);

* frequently shifts line of work, study, interest, or future plans (pg. 264);

* engages in occasional financial extravagance (pg. 264);

* has a tendency toward promiscuity, with repeated conjugal or romantic failure (pg. 264);

* may use alcohol or drugs to control moods or to augment excitement (pg. 264);

* has irritable-angry-explosive outbursts that alienate loved ones (pg. 264);

* makes frequent changes in residence or geographical location (Akiskal, 1995, pg. 1143).

This test is very accurate

I gave it to my family members, and it is very accurate

All my life I never knew what mental illness my father had. I guessed that he was schizophrenic

I gave him this test and now I know that he suffers from:

Schizoid personality disorder

He is an INTP

Albert Einstein was an INTP

Schizoid and Schizotypal are personality disorders and are both very different

They are different from schizophrenia, which is not a personality disorder, but a mental illness

Schizoid Personality Disorder (SPD) is a personality disorder characterized by a lack of interest in social relationships, a tendency towards a solitary lifestyle, secretiveness, and emotional coldness. SPD is reasonably rare compared with other personality disorders. Its prevalence is estimated at less than 1% of the general population.

INTP Under Stress

INTPs lack follow-through and this can isolate their ideas from practical examination. Their notions become over-intellectualized and too abstract to be of practical benefit. With their sharp critical thinking and analytical abilities, INTPs tend to nit-pick, hair-split, and generally overdo simple issues. Their desire for accuracy and precision exacerbates any error they may perceive in themselves or in others - they are, in other words, highly self-critical. Wanting to be competent and know everything, their standards grow increasingly higher. When fear of failing becomes overly pronounced, INTPs are quick to feel unintelligent, slow, and powerless.

If stress continues, the INTP's mind seems to freeze and block out the vital information it has worked so hard to accumulate. Their creative juices stop flowing and they suffer from stage fright, writers block, and a general inhibition of their ingenious thinking and fluent language skills. Preoccupied with performance failure, INTPs become self-consciously distracted in anticipation of their failure. If the stress becomes too overwhelming, the fear of blanking out prevents them from taking risks in areas they desire to succeed in. Attempting to avoid incompetence, they fail to gain the expertise and mastery they so desperately need.

LOL - I was sorta joking.

I've taken that same test and others like it administered at work so that they know what cubby-hole to put you in and how best to manipulate you. LOL

What you have to remember is that not everyone HAS a personality disorder. This test shows you how you react when under stress and the FEATURES of which personality disorder you would be most likely to exhibit. It doesn't mean you have a personality disorder.

Balance is the key to mental health.

ENJF? - I think I got those in the right order. I've been knowing that for a while. I took this online test a few days ago, and it showed the same thing that I've seen before...Tests like this can help you learn how best to interact with other people and what elements of yourself need to be held in check to achieve better balance.

I find the Enneagram types much more useful to determine
personality disorders.

The Enneagram measures internal motivation and is centuries old.

Check out the book "Personality Types" by Risso & Hudson.
It's my favorite book.

INFP Under Stress

INFPs feel internal turmoil when they find themselves in situations in which there is conflict between their inner code of ethics and their relationships with others. They feel caught between pleasing others and maintaining their own integrity. Their natural tendency to identify with others, compounded with their self-sacrificial dispositions, tends to leave them confused as to who they really are. Their quiet personalities further feeds their feelings of depersonalization. The INFP's quest for self-identity then seems even more alluring - but increasingly impossible to attain.

As with all NFs, the INFP will feel lost and perplexed at stressful times. As stress builds, INFPs become disconnected from their own personality and perceived place in life. They will lose sight of who they are in relation to time and place. They may not make basic observations, while instead they will focus on the more abstract and symbolic meanings of a particular interaction. This can sometimes baffle those who expect more direct communication and a fairly concrete relationship.
