Interesting that in contemporary society Sparta is idealized while Athenian culture is largely ignored. Viva Athens! |

People can dream of it and pound their chest all they want, but it'll never happen. Military and police are so well organized in the States; if we ever did grow some balls, they would be swiftly cut off. Here in Greece, THE GOVERNMENT FEARS THE PEOPLE. Gotta admire that... |
Cosmic Bee (OP) User ID: 575589 Greece 12/19/2008 10:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | i dunno. I guess it depends on how many "unfit" babies they threw off cliffs or left to die of exposure. I was also thinking about disciplined formation lines in battle...ha! If a Spartan could jump out of his grave and see that. |

Ok, as regards discipline the decadent Athenians could have learned a thing or two I suppose. |

Cosmic Bee (OP) User ID: 575589 Greece 12/19/2008 10:27 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is prophetic Quoting: Anonymous Coward 574150Greece is the birthplace of western civilization What is happening now in Greece, will eventually spread all over Europe Prophetic and even romantic. But I don't think it'll spread all over Europe, granted there are and will be copy cats here and there. There is something much deeper at work, Greece is being conquered by division and she will destroy herself in the end. I get the feeling that the average Greek is starting to wake up to this. There is so much more to this, people however are too lazy (or maybe even stupid) to look deeper. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 377938 United States 12/19/2008 10:31 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There are some easily thought out tactics for line fighting with riot cops that would result in minimal casualties and maximum disruption. These guys appear to be on the path to it. I guess it's all about motivation and what kind of consequences they're willing to accept. Recreational vs. serious rioting and all that. The Spartans would have either broken that line of cops like it wasn't there or, if they were the cops, killed every one of the protesters to make their point. Everything I've read about them tells me they were hard, hard men who would have viewed this as little better than their first training exercises with 8 year olds. |

I've read Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield and was amazed at how the Spartans trained, thought through their tactics and such. Been trying to learn and understand more about it ever since. |

And we are not divided in the way you probably think. We all agree that we need a better state we can check and make them serve the societys values. But first there is a deep need for different values. We know them and talk about them but we dont have representatives to formally express them. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 372008 Canada 12/19/2008 10:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Holding formation (and the gladius) allowed the Romans to conquer tribes of warriors who on an individual basis were stronger and superior "fighters" Forget 300 for a minute. In a one on one fight against a "Persian Immortal" any Greek solider would likely have their ass cut off before they could blink twice. However, 20 Greeks (most were farmers remember) holding formation could kill hundreds enemies taking very few causualties. Better yet, it takes a life time to train a skilled warrior with a bow or sword, so can you never have all that many around, and each one you lose is a BIG loss cause you can't recover it quickly. Whereas you take a farmer, give him a spear and instill the discipline to stay in formation and you can raise a HUGE army with relatively little cost in comparison. The large armies of the East had lots of room and were very mobile. Battles were short, fluid, and often indecisive. It was more like to continous series of skirmishes and ambushes. The greek invented the idea of "battlefield" warfare. Where two sides line up and go at it until one side quits. The idea was to get it over with in a day or so, even though causaulties were generally much higher this way. Greeks made war "rational" and "total" . Warrior cultures saw warfare in ritual terms - whereas the greeks realized that you didn't have to stop killing on the battlefield if you really wanted to conquer someone - you just kept on going until the other side was more or less completely decimated. |

So, are you riot fatigued yet? I'm so depressed from all the tension and negative energy flying around this city. In a way yes. It is not nice to constantly live under stress in a way or another. But I m glad because we are transforming again into political entities. I would be very scared if there was apathy in the society. |

Many times the armies just watched their leaders fight one against the other and waited to see who was to win the war. Imagine this happening today! |
