I thought the movie had a negative message.
Yeah, he wanted to "atone" for his wrongs,
but he could have served the needs of others much more effectively and less gruesomely WITHOUT committing suicide,
Thou shalt not kill refers to one's own self as well !

Even if his intentions were good,
he tried to play God from a very limited human ego persepctive, and that's not the way to do it.
