Why aren't there any black Santas in the malls?

I know it is bad form to reply to a 4 year old post, but since I stumbled upon this in my google search for a black santa to bring my son to visit, I thought it might be reasonable to chime in with a little information that others who come upon this page may find interesting.

Most scholars believe Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) to have been a Moor. Early iconography depicts him as being very dark skinned. He lived in Asia Minor, present day Turkey, in the 4th century AD where he was most likely a bishop. Saint Nicholas was celebrated for his generosity. One of the most popular stories of Saint Nicholas is his paying the dowries of three young sisters who would have otherwise been sold into prostitution. Early Christians celebrated his birthday on Dec. 6 by giving presents. This tradition spread throughout Europe and eventually became interlaced with pagan midwinter Yule festivals and the combination of these two traditions was co-opted by the Church and rebranded as Christmas to celebrate the birth of Christ.

I've never seen one? Why can't Santa be black?
