Re: Where's the BEST place to hide a car about to be REPO'D??
Swapping cars with a friend won't help. The repo guys will run the plate of the car that IS in your garage and go to that address next! (They're not dumb!) A three way swap- sometimes will work. Just be sure the car that you're driving is not the plate (registered) locating where they can find your car.

I've also known people who did swaps with friends out of state. I let a guy "take over" a lease once that was on a car I had. I got transferred to Europe and couldn't get anyone to take the remaining two years on a Mercedes. So this guy wanted it and I trusted him. Eight months later MB Credit couldn't find it! I finally gave them his address and let them pick it up. He'd never made even one payment - the bastard!

But without my help, they'd be looking for it still, I'm sure.

However, this guy lived in another county, had no known connection to me, and drove it to and from work for eight months. H e lived in Orange county and my address was in LA. No one would have thought to check his area for the car because I had no known connection there at all.

They do not report them stolen however. That may help. Just send the repo guy looking for it. If your garage has windows consider foil or paint to black them out from the inside. No use letting someone see what's in there at will.

In a basement freezer. No one EVER looks there for a car!

The ones big enough for this run about $40,000 and will require a second electrical setup. Good luck!

refering back to the post about a storage facility,
Does the manager report the vehicles he/she sees comming in and being stored in a garage? And even if the repo man does know its in a facility, he cant cut a lock to get into the garage( that seem to be a unversal law.

My sister in law's car was about to be repo'd four years ago, and she called me in a panic. I wired her the $600 to pay off past due payments. She went to the repo place, paid the money, got a receipt. Next day they came by her house and took the car anyway. Bastards.

I never saw my $600 again either... We barely speak now.

Re: Where's the BEST place to hide a car about to be REPO'D??
In my poor years, I hid my car a few blocks away in an apartment complex parking lot.

Lots of other cars to hide with.

Sucked walking home, but better than walking everywhere.

I seen the tow truck case my place a few times, but they never found the car.

The irony is, I needed my car to get caught back up. If they would have taken it, I'd have been double screwed.

I didn't bother reading the replies so sorry if this has been mentioned.

I used to work in the repo dept for a financing company...

If your car has ONSTAR (or onstar like system), don't bother hiding it. Even if your onstar isn't activated with an account, all they have to do is disable it so the car doesn't drive., then track it using the onstar and pick it up. You cannot hide it from them if you have onstar type technology on the vehicle.

If your car does not have that, the safest place is a storage unit, INSIDE a locked storage unit. Make sure you make paymjents on the storage unit though. If it's parked in an outside lot at a storage unit-- they can still get (sneak) in and repo it if they know it is there. Harder to find if it's inside a locked unit.

If you park it in your garage-- many states, they can just show up with the police and demand you open up the garage. You will have no choice but to let it be repoed.

They will call the neighbors, relatives, ec.. They pay cash to family and friends to rat you out.

bluewings You guys are so out of date. Nowadays they all have a GPS transmitter in them so hiding it on Uncle Joe's back 40 ain't gonna work. Either get something you know you can make the payments on, or get a good used vehicle.

Oops, I see Joyfullheart beat me to it.

If you don't want to go to the trouble of hiding the car and would rather just let them take it, I say just remove the engine and sell it off for parts - not much they can do about that, huh?

Lemme say this, I despise repo men with all the hate I can muster - I can only hope that some of them are forced to eat lead in the near future - perhaps that'll keep these vermin of society in check.

Yep, use a U-HAUL car carrier, at your address, remove battery from on-star car/truck tow to area w/o cell coverage. Find area without Sprint telecom service and park it in some guys barn. Important to remove battery before you tow to not pass cell towers on the way.

Re: Where's the BEST place to hide a car about to be REPO'D??
I've been going thru it for almost a year now. The house I live in is out in the boonies. It's a 45 minute drive just to get out here and then it's two miles up a dirt road. The guy who built the house built it with garages on two opposite sides. One at street level that's obvious and the other on the opposite side, is on the lower level and hidden by gates and a fence. The only thing going down there is a drive that stops at a parking pad at the lower level on the outside of the 8' fence. When the gates are opened, they allow you to drive to the lower garage, but when they're closed the doors for the lower garage are all but invisible.

I usually park the car in the lower garage and keep two other cars in the upper one. There are no windows in the lower unit and it's a two car tandem (deep) garage. By the time I pull the first car in, you have to have the door open and the lights on to see the back end of it. I'm thinking about putting in a framed wall (aluminum studs and lightweight gypsum board) and then using it as an "interior garage door" in the tandem garage. Another opener, and some door track would do it. The wall would actually be a garage door inside the tandem garage. When that interior "door" was down, the garage would look like it was only one car deep. And the "target" vehicle could easily be parked behind the other door deep in the tandem. I mean if you see a wall at the end of the garage, complete with a bike hanging on it, and some gardening tools mounted to it - who in hell is going to think it could open upward like another door? I bet that $500 or so in materials and a weekends' labor could allow me to hide the target vehicle there for months!

I have had these repo assholes at the house at 3 AM once. They rang the bells and looked in the windows. We didn't answer and we're comfortably ensconced in our bedroom with the shutters down and the lights turned down. The assholes walked around the house until the dogs start after them - then they got back in their car and left in a hurry.

I don't need the car but since the bastards charged it off when I got three months down once, and I've got a huge charge off on my C/R now - I will play cat and mouse with them for a year or two. The longer they don't have the car, the less it is worth when they do get it. They fucked me, now it's my turn to return the favor. BTW: I offered to make up the back payments, and offered to buy the car for cash. They would not allow me to do either. So fuck em! I've got enough cash to pay for any car I want to buy and I have two other cars that are paid for. Credit or not having it is not much of a threat for me these days. So the repo jerks that work for GMCC will have plenty to do for a while. I also understand that a lot of the big auto finance places are taking so many vehicles back that they're now getting negotiable on the deals they will cut. They've got so many thousands of repos that they're not selling at the auctions and the finance people end up having to store them, or sell them for pennies on the dollar. So they'd rather cut a deal with the original buyer and see if they can 'rehab" the loan and get some of their money out of it, even if it takes several years to do so. Better than an 80% loss at the auctions, plus the recovery and storage and insurance expenses until it goes to auction.

May be worth a try in a few months. I'll have my lawyer call them. I don't speak to them and that way I never have to lie to them! Nice, eh?

If your property is fenced in, simply inform them they are trespassing and to get off your property.

They are not allowed to break the law to repossess it.

Start taking it apart and sell off the parts.
Probably worth more in pieces than it is as a unit, and the advantage is that it is difficult for them to repossess.
