Before now they have just put on that site earthquakes at YNP not volcano activity so maybe something is now starting to bubble. Something must of changed for them to change the status.

It is common for the lake to be iced over by now. Sometimes up to 3 feet thick.
I wonder if the ice is cracking due to the waves.

yes it is saying 'activity' but if you go to their main page, they have an icon of a volcano which is active (the quakes) but is NOT erupting (yet). if you look on that main page you should see the yellowstone icon in the shape of a volcano but with NO eruption on it, whereas if you look at africa you will see another volcano icon, but the africa icon has an 'erupting top'.
seems the volcano IS active but NOT erupting (and hopefully won't).
that's the way i'm reading that site right now. hope it helps |
