Usually the Bison love hanging out near old faithful, too. But, I have only seen the humans watching. Though, they truly are near the warm parts past Old Faithful.

It is usually the bears, wolves, Bison and Elk that I see by the Yellowstone Lake & Hotel. If you ever have a chance, spend an evening drinking Long Island Ice Tea on the many Decks overlooking the Lake during a full moon and full exposure to reflective light.

It is spectacular.

Most 1st worlders don't even know food isn't grown at the grocery store, how do you think they would hunt & gather their own food? The last ice age was already in full swing 70k years ago, they had already adapted to the weather before Toba even went off. Yet even with that going for them it almost completely wiped them out. I will concede maybe only 95% of people will die.

Smaller steam explosions occur every 20,000 years or so; an explosion 13,000 years ago left a 5 kilometer diameter crater at Mary Bay on the edge of Yellowstone Lake (located in the center of the caldera). Additionally, non-explosive eruptions of lava flows have occurred in and near the caldera since the last major eruption; the most recent of these was about 70,000 years ago. Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho is the result of volcanic activity between 11,000 and 2,000 years ago.

Last Ice Age happened in less than year say scientists

« Previous « PreviousNext » Next »View GalleryPublished Date: 02 August 2008
By angus howarth
THE last ice age 13,000 years ago took hold in just one year, more than ten times quicker than previously believed, scientists have warned.

Rather than a gradual cooling over a decade, the ice age plunged Europe into the deep freeze, German Research Centre for Geosciences at Potsdam said.

Cold, stormy conditions caused by an abrupt shift in atmospheric circulation froze the continent almost instantly during the Younger Dryas less than 13,000 years ago – a very recent period on a geological scale.

The new findings will add to fears of a serious risk of this happening again in the UK and western Europe – and soon.

Dr Achim Brauer, of the GFZ (GeoForschungs Zentrum) German Research Centre for Geosciences at Potsdam, and colleagues analysed annual layers of sediments, called "varves", from a German crater lake.

Each varve records a single year, allowing annual climate records from the region to be reconstructed.

So, 13,000 years ago part of yellowstone had a huge steam explosion and we were simultaneously plunged into an ice age. Coincidence?

Ice Age blast 'ravaged America'
A controversial new idea suggests that a large space rock exploded over North America 13,000 years ago.

The blast may have wiped out one of America's first Stone Age cultures as well as the continent's big mammals such as the mammoth and the mastodon.

The blast, from a comet or asteroid, caused a major bout of climatic cooling which may also have affected human cultures emerging in Europe and Asia. Scientists will outline their evidence this week at a meeting in Mexico.

Their impact theory shouldn't be dismissed; it deserves further investigation -- Jeff Severinghaus, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
The evidence comes from layers of sediment at more than 20 sites across North America.

These sediments contain exotic materials: tiny spheres of glass and carbon, ultra-small specks of diamond - called nanodiamond - and amounts of the rare element iridium that are too high to have come from Earth.

All, they argue, point to the explosion 12,900 years ago of an extraterrestrial object up to 5km across.

No crater remains, possibly because the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which blanketed thousands of sq km of North America during the last Ice Age, was thick enough to mask the impact.

Another possibility is that it exploded in the air.

Climate Cooling

The rocks studied by the researchers have a black layer which, they argue, is the charcoal deposited by wildfires which swept the continent after the explosion.

Clovis hunting points, Center for the Study of the First Americans The Clovis people developed an advanced stone tool technology The blast would not only have generated enormous amounts of heat that could have given rise to wildfires, but also brought about a period of climate cooling that lasted 1,000 years - an event known as the Younger Dryas.

Professor James Kennett, from the University of California in Santa Barbara (UCSB), said the explosion could be to blame for the extinction of several large North American mammals at the end of the last Ice Age.

"All the elephants, including the mastodon and the mammoth, all the ground sloths, including the giant ground sloth - which, when standing on its hind legs, would have been as big as a mammoth," he told the BBC.

"All the horses went out, all the North American camels went out. There were large carnivores like the sabre-toothed cat and an enormous bear called the short-faced bear."

Professor Kennett said this could have had an enormous impact on human populations.

Population Decline

According to the traditional view, humans crossed from north-east Asia to America at the end of the last Ice Age, across a land bridge which - at the time - connected Siberia to Alaska.

The Clovis culture was one of the earliest known cultures in the continent. These proficient hunter-gatherers developed a distinctive thin, fluted spear head known as the Clovis point, which is regarded as one of the most sophisticated stone tools ever developed. Archaeologists have found evidence from the Topper site in South Carolina, US, that Clovis populations here went through a population collapse.

But there is no evidence of a similar decline in other parts of the continent. The Clovis culture does vanish from the archaeological record abruptly, but it is replaced by a myriad of different local hunter-gatherer cultures.

Jeff Severinghaus, a palaeoclimatologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California, told Nature magazine: "Their impact theory shouldn't be dismissed; it deserves further investigation."

According to the new idea, the comet would have caused widespread melting of the North American ice sheet. The waters would have poured into the Atlantic, disrupting its currents.

This, they say, could have caused the 1,000 year-long Younger Dryas cold spell, which also affected Asia and Europe.

The Younger Dryas has been linked by some researchers to changes in the living patterns of people living in the Middle East which led to the beginning of farming.

A massive explosion near the Tunguska river, Siberia, in 1908, is also thought to have been caused by a space rock exploding in the atmosphere. It felled 80 million trees over an area of 2,000 sq km.

The new theory will be presented and debated at the American Geophysical Union's Joint Meeting in Acapulco, Mexico, in late May 2007.

So, do those dolts even realize that their "5 KM SPACE ROCK" is the same size as the 5 KM CRATER LEFT BY THE LAST YELLOWSTONE STEAM EXPLOSION AT THE SAME FREAKING TIME?

Gee, same size, same time.

There have been no reports of gaseous emissions out of the ordinary coming from anywhere in the park or any change in water quality or geothermal activity either or unusually fast uplift or subsidence. Right now they are just a curious set of earthquakes. So for everyone hoping to get out of their January mortgage payments I think you are out of luck.

I will grant you that the park is snowed in so to speak and there are fewer people around to make observations this time of year, but in the absence of some other, new developments I do not feel that there is anything to be concerned with yet. In the event that there is a confluence of volcanic event indicators such as the ones that I have mentioned then I feel that there is something to be concerned with. Without these additional factors we have a one dimensional event/viewpoint from which to attempt to extrapolate useful information.

70,000 years ago the human race had absolutely zero ability to store food long term. Im not saying that tens of millions to billions wouldn't die, however I think we are in much better shape to face this then we were 70,000 years ago.

So, do those dolts even realize that their "5 KM SPACE ROCK" is the same size as the 5 KM CRATER LEFT BY THE LAST YELLOWSTONE STEAM EXPLOSION AT THE SAME FREAKING TIME?

Gee, same size, same time.

i think we dont know how a super volcano can be before it blow we never see one

:(

The Lord has always kept me aware of anything that is going to happen about 2 weeks in advance (in my own life, not in others). I'll give a brief history so this will make sense....I run a food and clothing ministry here, and the Lord miraculously provided the building, and my volunteers. I would be totally lost without my volunteers. We click well together and have become the best of friends. A week ago the Lord told me that neither one of them would be working at the ministry soon. (The Lord gave me this word once before about another volunteer, and sure enough within two weeks, she had moved on and no longer works for me.....So needless to say I was very distraught, and asked the Lord WHY??....I told my husband, either the Lord was going to replace the two of my friends, or the ministry would no longer exist. I truly believe, the ministry will no longer exist because this ministry has become our love, and our life. To make a long story short, people, destruction is coming on America. Whether it is Yellowstone, I don't know, but something terrible is about to happen. I feel it in the air. I feel it all around me. Be prepared. I believe it could very well happen between Thursday and Sunday.

Where are you located?

Whenever scientists classify the seismic activity around a super volcano as been out of the ordinary, I think its time to be atleast a little concerned.

Theteck:

The fact remains that no one knows what the precursors to a super-volcanic eruption look like because there hasn't been one in recorded history. We can observe and evaluate all we want but until there are some real indicators there is little we can say or do. Once the real indicators start happening then it will be clear that it will erupt and then it will be too late. Lets remember too that the probabilities of this thing going off in our life time are infintessimal. That is to say, we would need some boku bad luck.

The Toba Eruption was the largest volcanic event in the last 25 million years. That was 70,000 years ago and the human race who depended solely on hunting and gathering managed to survive. Millions maybe billions would die but the Human race would survive Yellowstone.

You have a good point, but it is very hard to compare our civilization today to that of 70K years ago. You have 3rd world countries that rely on 1st world countries for food aid.

Of course they did. They were in an ice age, the world was a freezer and they had woolly mammoths to hunt! I wouldn't be surprised if they also knew how to preserve things with salt. We now are the ones who don't save food. Just in time system, worldwide.
