No humiliation intended, Trench.
Posting that map could be enough of a teaching tool to at least give anyone thinking about heading up here a clear idea of what they'd be getting themselves into.

Aren't you from AZ, Trench? Winds like that aren't exactly a big deal for us, are they? Even the last few days, up north where I live, we had a real 'blow over the outhouse' storm that blew all night and all day for about three days. Concerning your post, you show a quality here I hadn't noticed before and I like it very much.

I don't think Montana really gets this cold either...

I walked the dog earlier and it was the first time I've seen him with cold paws. Julius is a long-haired German Shepherd...

I got frost nip on the tops of my ears in about 10 minutes. Ouch. They'll be peeling this week now.

429, will the dog tolerate booties? Don't know if you're in Anch
If so, Ray's Harness Shop, on Int'l Airport Road will fit them to your dog's paws.
Petco's booties are crap
AK Mill & Feed has them too, same quality as Ray's but more expensive.

Sweet, I'll check that out. I don't know if he'll wear them, but he started hopping on one paw and stuff today... Might as well try them. They'll be good for going out on the rocks in the summer too.

I love mill and feed. They have a little bit of everything I like to do.

I don't think I've seen ray's, is that by the bush co or closer to the airport.

I'll concede it doesn't often get that cold, but when it does get really cold, you don't get any warning and that's one of the things that makes this country dangerous. The high desert has a big temperature differential for night and day all year round and also the weather changes back and forth so your body can't get used to any one situation. Death from exposure happens here every winter; often with the intoxicated who fall asleep just anywhere and wake up dead. I've set out to town for shopping on a clear, sunny, just mildly chilly day and had a blizzard waiting for me on the way home.

Almost became one of those casualties myself once because of failing to carry the clothing for such surprises and when my truck got stuck, had to walk a mile and a half to my brother-in-law's. And, like a fool, I was wearing a skirt too and must have had a hundred pounds of ice and snow stuck to it by the time I got there. You'll feel like sitting down for a rest, 'just for a minute' but if you know cold, you know what'll happen to you if you do that.

Good thing you kept moving. Sit down, lose track of the minutes ticking off, you wind up another statistic.

Back in the 80's I came close to hypothermia at a forest service cabin. Once was enough.

The high desert was my list for potential places to check as a new location, until I found the right property elsewhere. Beautiful country out there - and sparse population.

Here's the point I'm making on this thread. Lots of states see subzero temperatures. It's winter, northern states get cold.

However, a good portion of Alaska sees sub zero temperatures last for months on end.
Maybe some folks think roughing it out in a SHTF scenario in subzero temperatures for months on end will be what they're looking for.

When I was a kid I though so too & man was I wrong. You work day & night just to keep warm. There's hardly time to do anything else.

Hmmm... wonder if we can make reservations for New Year's Eve? At least there is one place where I can wear my mink topcoat or the sheered beaver lined bomber jacket and no one will bitch. They'd understand I was merely trying to keep warm. And the fucking animals were raised for their pelts, anyway! Mink have ONLY one use on this earth - and it's not for eating! They are nasty horrible creatures that will bite their mates, eat their children, and attack anything within 50 yard of itself. The only good mink is a dead mink. Or better yet, a skinned dead mink!

Did you know if you skin 40 minks and throw the carcasses outside, even starving wolves will not eat them! They taste bad on top of everything else - so I'm told!
