What to do for pinched nerve in the neck and shoulder area?
Today when I turned my head I felt something snap in the back of my head/neck area. Then the pain kinda moved down into my shoulder and shoulder blade was well. I'm miserable.

I remember I had a few of these in my teen years and they went away on their own after a week or two.....but is there anything I can do to speed it up?

Massage from a physical therapist who is well-versed in massage therapy. Might take a coupla sessions.

A little Advil would help too.

Re: What to do for pinched nerve in the neck and shoulder area?
ice it for fifteen minutes.
it will numb the nerve so you won't feel the pain.
use something betwix your skin and the ice or at least move the ice around in a tiny circle so that you don't freeze the skin.

advil/motrin is an anti-inflammatory and can help relieve some of the pain (it's in the aspirin family, so if you can't take aspirin, don't take this)

Thanks for all the advice. I do have an acupuncturist and thought about seeing a chiro (I'm afraid of them, had a bad session once).

What kind of thoughts are you having? Are you being stubborn about something?

Pain = resistance

Give up trying to control and all pain goes away.

See a chiropractor. Really no other choice.

There are many good chiropractors out there, but a few bad apples.
Ask around, and find one that others have used and respect.

OP you can make a tea with turmeric (indian spice). This works very well for me as I have bad knees and it never fails me. Bonus of course it is not a drug. Take a half teaspoon in tea, use honey to make it more palatable. Do this as often as you can throughout the day. FYI the turmeric can sometimes be binding (if you know what I mean). It will work... trust me.

You may also try a caster oil (aptly named palm of Christ), soaked pad on the area which is causing you discomfort and use a heating pad at night. This is in addition to the turmeric of course.

Re: What to do for pinched nerve in the neck and shoulder area?
A trapped nerve in the neck starts off being painful, and can gradually send the muscles into spasm, as happens with a bad back. It can become excruciating.

I booked a session with a friend who was a physiotherapist, he took 10 minutes of stretching my head, which released the nerve. A year later this happened again. Both time were when I turned my head to look at my alarm clock.

When it happened a third time, I got my brother to do the job, as my physiotherapist friend was dying of cancer.

After that, I moved my clock, and learned not to twist my head so far! Home brew fix that worked for me doing what the physio did:

Lie on your back on a dining room table, get someone to grip the head above the ear on one side, and below the jaw (and ear) on the other side. With reasonable careful force, pull the head slightly A symmetrically, stretching the head slightly more on the side with the trapped nerve. Pushing the chin down rather than tilting the head backwards.

It is pretty obvious when the nerve has released, though the shoulder / neck can remain tender, the serious pain goes.

Ice it several times a day and do gentle stretches for that area.

Take Aleve.

Thanks for all the advice. When I woke up it was still there. I took 2 tylenols, stretched where it hurt for about a 1/2 hour, then took a very hot bath and now it's all better. Almost, I'm still a little stiff in the neck.

That will teach you not to turn your neck, you old bastard!!
Do you think you are a young man and capable of such acrobatics? If you find yourself in a situation where you must look to your side, turn your whole upper body, not your NECK!

Now that you have hurt yourself by turning your neck, take lots of muscle relaxers and painkillers immediately.

King Bio brand has a nice one for neck problems. Worked for me till I finally saw an old fashioned Chiropractor. Not the gentle one for me. I don't want to go back fifteen times when one time will do it.

I have cervical arthritis and sometimes when I turn my head I get the cracking/popping sound. I think the best thing is to wear a cervical collar for about a week and stretch the tendons and muscles and it should feel better.

A cayenne oil massage will help with the pain. It will not irritate your skin unless you have a cut, etc.
