Yeah but most people make it at least past their thirties, even if they are doing drugs and drinking alot.

Look, one year of touring is like seven years off your life if you do not take care of yourself. I know many musicians that are still alive and some good ones that succumbed to the pleasures...I myself did a lot of partying and should have been dead while touring..however, musicians know this is part of the lifestyle.

Now, they can choose how to live, but many figure they only get 10 good years anyway..also, many are dealing with bi-polar and while creative have to struggle with the "NORMAL" balance everyone else seems to have.

Some, only see themselves as an extension of their instrument or pen. Sad..but true...when I had to stop playing I wanted to die and cursed GOD..hated everything, everyone and myself. So, although everyone is different, it usually comes down to delving into parts of the mind that others do not want to face...more often than not a lot of us are depressed and when the show is over..it is OVER if you know what I mean.

I used to believe that going out while on top was the best thing..but having lost quite a few friends to drugs and other things on the road...I don't agree..although for some..it was the choice they made.

Well thanks, that's the most well thought out reply so far, and it does make sense! I just wonder why there are plenty of junkies and drunks who manage to live long lives and have successful careers...and why the ones who don't make it become so popular to the point of nearly deification.

I have thought about this so many times. I don't think it's coincidence. TPTB eliminate not only people who are a threat, but also people who are a potential threat.

It really makes me sad to think about all the amazing people the Human Race has lost.

Well if they had actually been non-smokers and non-drinkers and non-drugtakers they would still be here today. They just had to say no. It's like when you see a fat person and they don't know how to lose weight. How about 'let's not put that slice of chocolate cake in your mouth' - that would be a good start.

I don't think they are being bumped off for the most part. It's the lifestyle as winningjob says. Besides the booze & drugs there's the lack of sleep, lack of regular meals, and lots of traveling (car & plane wrecks).

Jim didn't write Light My Fire. Robbie Kreiger wrote most of it, Ray Manzarek came up with the organ riff, Jim contributed some of the second verse and that was it. Jim disliked the song himself and hated performing it.

Personally I don't buy the argument that these people's music would suck if they weren't so stoned out of their trees. I believe the opposite is the case, I think they would've made even better music if they were in full focus of their faculties - but we will never know that for sure.

I mean, I don't smoke, I'm not a boozer, and I don't do drugs, but I have a huge passion for psychedelic music, and writing too. It is possible to write mind-altering music without actually going there and messing yourself up in the process.

Kurt I think had a valid excuse for his junkie lifestyle - he had a terrible stomach problem that doctors couldn't fix - so heroin was his only relief, so I can't really fault him for that. But the others, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison etc, they didn't need to stay on the path they took.

The german filmmaker Fassbinder made a movie about a once-famous actress who becomes basically a slave to people who control her with dope. I think that kind of thing really happens. Parasites attach themselves to a rising star and live an almost effortless and luxuriant existence.

I would safely conclude this was Robbie's baby, not Jim's. Jim didn't even like the song.
