SNIP At least 59 people have been killed and 130 others wounded in a fire at a nightclub in the Thai capital Bangkok.
Locals and foreigners were among more than 1,000 revellers packed into the Santika club for New Year celebrations when the blaze broke out, quickly spreading through the building and causing the roof to collapse.
The fire started at the club in the city's Ekkamai district early on Thursday morning, triggering a stampede as partygoers ran for the building's only exit.
Police Major-General Chokchai Deeprasertwit told the Associated Press the fire may have been caused by firecrackers brought into the club by guests or sparks flying from a New Year's pyrotechnics countdown on the nightclub stage.
Dozens of bodies wrapped in white cotton sheets lay on the pavement outside as fire crews moved in to douse the embers of the club in an area popular with foreigners and wealthy Thais.
