Gigantism does happen. We have records, images of 'modern' folk who have grown pretty tall due to disorders, tumors in the brain, etc.

It is possible that that 12' fellow was a sufferer of one or possibly several disorders which spurned is terrific growth.

Goliath most likely was one of those types, after all he was dropped rather easily we now know that a tumor in the brain can cause both gigantism and it can make a person with that tumor susceptible to death with just a minor blow to the head.
