Seriously though, when I've talked with people about keeping a pantry stocked, I've said how vulnerable we are to a transportation disruption here, there are so few roads in and out of the area, if they close I-5, that's where ALL the groceries and supplies come in. A couple of bridges down from an earthquake (god forbid) could have a serious long term impact on NW Washington & the whole area. Same with Vancouver, B.C., Canada, there are hardly any ways in and out of there, it's just squished against the ocean at the foot of the mountains. Of course all this same talk about bottlenecks for supplies in, applies to anything like an evacuation out of here. Really if anything ever happened, no one would be going ANYWHERE. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 563638 United States 01/07/2009 09:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | CAMP MURRAY, WASH., - The State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) began a Phase III activation at 8 a.m. today due to statewide flooding as well as significant landslide and avalanche hazards. Gov. Christine Gregoire’s office was notified when the State EOC activated. Her staff will receive periodic updates on the flood situation. KING The National Weather Service says a series of Pacific storms will drop heavy rain in the Olympics and Cascades, potentially flooding some Western Washington rivers. Washingtonians should consider the following preparedness actions: • Respect road closures, be aware of potential landslides and don’t attempt to drive through standing water. • Listen to radio and television stations for local information and weather reports. The State EOC activation will include personnel from the Washington Emergency Management Division (WEMD) and other key state agencies, including the departments of Agriculture, Transportation; Health, Fish and Wildlife, Natural Resources, Social and Health Services, Washington National Guard, Ecology and the Washington State Patrol. Staff from the American Red Cross and the Washington Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster also are reporting. Two counties – Thurston and Whatcom – already have declared emergencies because of flooding and landslides. The State Enhanced 911 Office, in cooperation with local telephone carriers, reminds people across the state: • To stay off the telephone unless you have a critical need to make a telephone call. Remember a FAX or a computer also uses a telephone line and its use may affect your ability to get immediate help in a life-threatening emergency. • DO NOT call 9-1-1 unless you need an emergency response from police, fire or emergency medical personnel. • If you experience other types of problems not related to these emergency services, call the appropriate telephone number for those services. • If you pick up your telephone to make a call and do not hear a dial tone, DO NOT HANG UP. Simply wait a few seconds, and you will get a dial tone and be able to make your call. [link to www.krem.com] Looks like the temps in Spokane are warming up too. They broke records for snowfall, over 6 ft+, they will get hit hard too. [link to www.krem.com] |

I was down in Pierce county earlier and it was pouring buckets non-stop... couldn't even see the road as I was driving. |

Yeah with the ground heavy with snow, rain, and water, weight on the ground, sure don't need any stress on fault lines. Remember the flooding in Centralia dec 2007 that left the town under 10 feet of water! Levees, and dikes that never got the repairs needed.....Supposed to be worst! |

They've evacuated a large nursing home and moved the residents to the high school in our town. On the drive home tonight there were two SUV's stranded in standing water up to their doors. Kind of sucks because now my kids have friends staying the night and hanging out all day tomorrow and I can hear them destroying Ozzy Osborne's Crazy Train on Guitar Hero World Tour... drums and all. |

OP User ID: 590052 United States 01/10/2009 07:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hello, I don't know if my user # changed, since my last post my power, phone went out at 4am. I just got power and comcast service around midnight. Corps Of Engineers released water from a dam a flooded a town, and a levee broke somewhere....gets catching up on news. Mt Baker hwy was closed due to nocksac river over many parts of the hwy, and a mudslide 8 ft deep closed the hwy. North pass, and south pass was closed, and I was totally cut off. Still no mail or garbage service since dec 11th, I'm hoping the hwys are open....will check wsdot in a min... I have a small creek that runs from the mountain, that turned into a river overnight! A waterfall cascading down from the mountain could be heard 2 blocks away! I didn't even know where the water source for the creek was until now! The waterfall is very beautiful, but has turned the little creek into a river, and has flooded our streets. Looks like Washington State was totally isolated for a while too! Wow!
