Fuck toms...
even though it has no flouride.. it still uses sodium-laurel sulfate. Which is a very potent skin irritant... Beware of supposed "SAFE" or "All Natural" toothpastes/
There are some that even specifically stated no SLS's but the ingredient it is replaced by turns out being worse.

I use the NOW brand xylitol toothpaste. Get it for less than $4. I think I got it for $2.50 each. Xylitol rocks. No cavities in past 3 years and only go to dentist once a year. I also chew spry fruit gum (with xylitol). Word.

Haha. I just checked the SLS-free products, which all have fluoride. Maybe baking soda is the way to go.

I had a tube of the peppermint with flouride

it was ok, had a funky taste. I also tried the non fluoride.

I will stick with my colgate total clean mint which is has no whitening agents in it, but still has the benefit of total

My family is living a truly relutionary lifestyle... we make our own healthcare products and sell them the local market here in Fredericton Nb, Canada.
We make soap the ol' fashioned way, lip balms, moisterizers, shampoos n conditioners, bear balm, and various salves All natural. We try to get our supplies as local as possible to keep the unity in the community.
And we just recently encountered this toothpaste problem. and have decided to make various toothpastes for two reasons. 1. for ourselves (which is the best reason to make any product) and 2. for awareness.

That's very cool. Do you use alcohol when you make tinctures? If so, what kind? I've been using Everclear. It works well for me when making herbal medicines, tinctures, salves. I'm doing this all in a very primitive way. I'm sure there are better ways of doing this.

Yeah we have a press and make plenty of tinctures... and theres nothin wrong with the primitive way.... Even when our electricity goes out during icestorms, we can still make all of our products, since our house is heated with a badass woodstove. Were starting up some really badass projects, since we are natives(im from mayan descent and my adopted family are maliseet) we are into many native arts and crafts, we are learnin how to turn our hides to leathers and We plan on openin up another table at our market for our handmade dolls, hackeysacks, pinatas and other fun handmade items.

sounds way cool, do you happen to have a website? i am definitely into the natural/home made way of doing things, if you can give any advice on getting into that, i would be grateful. i sold a variety of herbal blends for five years, that was all i did, i need to do it again, but i would like to have a line of products to offer
not so interested in the leather/crafts , i am just not good at that

Do you use an electric press or a hand press? Can you recommend a good handpress? I've seen some good steel handpresses for about $150 but I'm not sure. I've just been using muslin so far.

my family is doing the same thing on the opposite side of canada that you're from(BC here). great to hear you guys are at it over there. there's lots of people around here doing the same. we grow everything we eat, preserve and can for winter, some veggies are still being picked from the garden in winter, just picked a 5 gallon bucket of fresh organic carrots. we make all of our own healthcare products and medicine(moms a herbalogist) i fish summer and winter and have the freezer stocked. we are starting a revolutionary new system for growing vegetables in the winter.

Re: Tom's Natural Fluoride-Free Baking Soda Toothpaste
Did you know fluoride occurs naturally in a lot of bodies of water?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 575967

Fluoride, as such, is never added to the water. Only silicofluorides (a hazardous waste containing many toxic pollutants) are used to artificially fluoridate water, and studies have proven that they do not effectively prevent tooth decay, they only delay it. (See opposition's response to Question 4). Silicofluorides never occur naturally in nature, and they are 85 times more toxic than natural occurring calcium fluoride. Therefore, the effect on the entire body will be different.

This was proven in a study called, "Comparative Toxicity of Fluorine Compounds." After this study was completed, this statement was made: " ... this meant a daily intake of approximately 40 mg/kg of fluorine from sodium fluoride as compared with 3400 mg/kg from calcium fluoride. Therefore, from the standpoint of lethal concentrations and amount of fluorine necessary to cause growth inhibition, wide differences in toxicity of some of the compounds of fluoride were noted." (See 3-1: Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. July 1934, page 797). In other words, industrial waste (sodium fluoride) is 85 times more toxic than natural calcium fluoride. Both of them contain fluoride, but they are totally different compounds. (Also see 3-2).

Calcium is a well-known antidote for fluoride poisoning. When an antidote accompanies a poison, it makes the poison far less toxic to the body. Soft waters to which fluoride is artificially added lack this calcium which is present in most waters that contain natural fluoride.

"The claim that fluoridation is one of 'nature's experiments' is not valid because the salts put into the water supply, sodium fluoride or silicofluorides, are industrial products never found in natural water or in organisms. They are, furthermore, notoriously toxic, sufficiently so to be used as rat poison or insecticide. Calcium fluoride, on the other hand, which is the form commonly found in natural waters, is not toxic enough for such uses." — Dr. C. G. Dobbs, (Ph.D., A.R.C.S.) Bangor, Wales, England.

That's just what I was going to say. They have a horrific reputation for animal testing. DO NOT buy their products, please! Do you want to do business with the kind of people who pour bleach in animals' eyes? It's worth your while to get the free PETA shopping guide and they have an 800 number on their website that you can call any time to ask if a company does animal testing.
