We are actually trying to get rid of all our children items before February 10th, then we'll start fresh, and be selective in what we receive. We don't want to be caught giving something away that might have lead in it. Crazy! As for our food.....WOW! We have given away nearly twice as much food this month as we did last month. People are coming out of the woodwork, needing food. Everything we have is free. It is a tiny little "WalMart". We have clothes, housewares, food, toys, etc. etc. Just about anything you can think of has come thru our doors. And how are you? Blessings to you also! |

OP I live in a very small town here in KY have you heard of Whitley City? Well there is no resources here at all. Most of our people here are out of a job. The agency is adding staff and phone lines and expanding its hours to try and keep up with the demand. But even with all that, this week some Mississippians didn't get their unemployment checks because of a computer glitch. Because of that glitch, 2,000 people didn't get their weekly unemployment checks. We're told the problem's been fixed and their money should be available by the end of the week. Unemployment benefits in the state start out at $30.00 a week and top out at $230.00. Officials say because of the recession, more than 9,000 Mississippians applied for unemployment funds this week. That's doubled from the same time period last year, when some 4,228 people received jobless benefits. |

Right before Christmas, Haynes, 33, said he lost his job at Kelly Services, a temporary staffing agency with an office in Beaumont. "They say jobs are available, and there's ads in the newspaper, but when I go out there, they say there's nothing," he said. "Some places have told me I'm overqualified. That's something you hate to hear." Haynes is among thousands of job-seeking people in Southeast Texas and across the country, hoping to no longer rely on the state-funded Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund for unemployment benefits. States would like residents to find work as well, since many are facing critical shortfalls in their Unemployment Trust Fund accounts in 2009. According to the National Conference of State Legislators, five states have Unemployment Trust Fund accounts re-serves of less than three months to cover benefits. Another eight states have reserves of less than six months, and six states have less than a year in reserve, according to the group. The U.S. Department of Labor recommends that states maintain a balance to sufficiently cover benefits for one year during a typical recession. Texas Workforce Commission spokeswoman Ann Hatchitt said Texas is not in nearly as much trouble, but the state's Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund is $144 million short of what's needed to get through 2009. Money for the trust fund comes from taxes nearly 278,000 Texas employers pay each quarter, Hatchitt said. The amount each employer pays is based on a tax rate the workforce commission sets each year, she said. Hatchitt said the Texas Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund's balance is $1.3 billion. The Texas Legislature requires the workforce commission to have a balance equal to 1 percent of all of taxable wages in the fund. Hatchitt said that is estimated to be $874.6 million. Through Oct. 1, 2009, Hatchitt said the workforce commission estimated that the trust fund balance would be $730.5 million - $144.1 million below the guideline. Assuming those projected numbers are accurate, Hatchitt said the workforce commission would implement a deficit assessment during calendar year 2010 to make up for shortfall. The state requires the workforce commission to add the deficit assessment to the employer tax rate when necessary, Hatchitt said. In 2009, the workforce commission reinstated a replenishment tax, according to the commission. The commission temporarily suspended the replenishment tax, a component of the tax rate, in 2008 because of strong economic conditions in Texas. Employers pay the replenishment tax rate to cover unemployment claims that were not charged to a specific employer. This tax tends to rise following economic slowdowns when claims increase and businesses close. Texas employers will pay a minimum 0.26 percent unemployment insurance tax rate - or $23.40 in tax per employee in 2009, according to a news release from the workforce commission. The taxes finance the Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund which provides unemployment insurance for Texas workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own, Hatchitt said. The rate is up from 0.1 percent in 2008 - a 25 year low - and is the first increase since 2004, according to the news release. As the state's unemployment rate rises, the workforce commission will have to dip deeper into the Unemployment Insurance fund. From November 2007 to November 2008, the state's unemployment rate rose 1.4 percent, sending the workforce commission's insurance fund spending up more than $42 million. The state unemployment rate in November 2008 was 5.6 percent. In that month, the Texas Workforce Commission paid $136,655,893 in regular unemployment insurance benefits, Hatchitt said. Some of those benefits were related to Hurricane Ike. The state's unemployment rate in November 2007 was 4.2 percent, and the workforce commission paid $94,242,070 in regular unemployment benefits, Hatchitt said. There's no way to predict what the unemployment rate in Southeast Texas will look like in 2009, but Robert Crawley, a workforce commission labor market analyst, said the rate should be seasonally affected like it is every year. In January and February, Crawley said unemployment rates are higher because temporarily hired season workers are being let go. Plus, he said, that is a slow time for construction activity. In the summer months, Crawley said the unemployment rate rises again because of the number of people looking for summer jobs. The rate declines at the end of the year because of seasonal hiring, he said. Haynes said he's hopeful a position opens up in the near future, because he needs to be able to pay the taxes he owes on his house in Beaumont. If he doesn't find work soon, Haynes said he may move to a bigger city, where he hopes more jobs will be available. "I haven't given up," he said. "I'm just going to keep looking. Why are the funds not 'set aside' as they are taken out of each individual's paycheck and later used to pay that same individual. As it stands currently, the funds taken in to both programs through payroll deductions, or taxes, are used to pay individuals that are collecting those benefits now. They are not put in to any type of special, individual, account to secure your future, although they are taken out of your income. After this recession is over, we can only hope that some kind of evaluation of all Government programs will be made. Otherwise, we may be looking at even harder times in the future, or worse, our children will have no 'life line' with Social Security or Unemployment Compensation. We can not let these programs continue on their path, nor can we let them go bankrupt. Thank you, but I give my Lord the glory. It is Him who leads me. I only follow. It is truly a family venture. My husband supports the ministry with his tithes. I home school, and our boys volunteer in the ministry with me. But seriously, Americans (and the world!) We must all join together in our communities to make it thru this government generated crisis! The Lord has guided me, and perhaps He will lead many others to follow the same pattern. I won't give you all the whole testimony because it is tremendous, so I will give the shortened version: The building was donated, and the community donates clothes. I With the aid of two other volunteers (who love and fear God), and including our boys, we sort thru the donations of clothes, housewares, pots and pans, toys, shoes, etc. Then we open the door, and everything that has been donated, goes out to the community. IT is first come, first serve. But our building is like a mini walmart. We have anything and everything. People, go to your city meetings, tell them this needs to be done. It will help so many people in this time of great crisis. Someone, of course, will take the brunt of the work on his shoulder, and the brunt of the bills. But it is well worth it. Once word gets out, you will get tons of donations. You won't believe the items people have in their closets, or give to goodwill, or just throw away! Why not give it away to someone who needs it? I pray this catches on. |
