Is the left/center more intelligent than the right?
I've always been a bit dismayed that the people who go into politics tend to be rich or born into it or just have big egos or a sense of entitlement. Intelligence and a good education has never been an overt driving force behind their ambitions or a selling point. Yes charisma is vital and yes the intelligentsia is prone to scoffing and not listening, but I want leaders who are intelligent. Not just good at keeping their jobs.

But can intelligence be drawn along party lines? As someone on the left, the programming of the right has always been very evident to me. They use fear of the other, fear of the idea of leftist government involvement that would strip you of your freedoms, all while the right itself is stomping on liberties, sending citizens to die in imperialistic wars, and allowing the "free market" to burn through the economy like a wild fire. And then not let the free market balance itself in the end anyway.

It's no wonder the educated think the right is stupid. University students are often taught to see power dynamics (political, racial, gender, etc) and to deconstruct them, to trust in recent publications not ones 2000 years old, to care about the welfare of our species and even its diversity, regardless of how inane we can be or how little familiarity we have with others.

Is it fair that the left paints the right as extremely stupid, uneducated and arrogant? I have had moments of feeling really threatened by the right. Was I duped? Am I any different than the right who wildly accuse others of wrecking their families and their country? I mean we're both squabbling about the other taking away our rights and freedoms....

My association with the right is that they're like an old school patriarch whose rules you have to follow because they are the biggest person in the house. That if you confront them with something they don't like, you will be quickly disowned unless you fall into line in a "we'll do it live!" type bluster.

It just seems to me that nowadays the center/left is more kind. Kinder to its neighbours and to countries they don't like, kinder to its citizens, kinder to the earth (at least they say they would like to be).

Ultimately, GLP was taught me to like the people on the right more. I finally get that their passions, while sometimes at odds with mine and my life, are born out of the same desire to get what's best for themselves, the nation, and the world. I admire that wild feeling of individuality, of personal freedoms, and the small government sentiment. I respect the help yourself attitude versus the help me attitude.

I no longer think of the right as a rampaging patriarch who resorts to bullying when he feels threatened. I ended up thinking McCain was really classy and I felt affection for Palin...that pioneer butchy/heterosexual salt-of-the-earth woman that you don't see much on the media...reminded me of some of my neighbours in the country when I was growing up. She said some incoherent things and I wouldn't have wanted her as VP, but I certainly didn't hate her.

I think that's the secret. To maintain a sense of affection and connection with people. And while I can't ultimately let go of the fact that I think the center/left tries to be more kind to people beyond their own tribe--and that this is a type of intelligence in my books--perhaps we should drop the rhetoric about the right being stupid.

Yes because the more simple minded people tend to see things in absolute black and white, while more intelligent people see things in shades of grey. Unfortunately, there are more average to dumb people in the bell than smart to brilliant. It's easier to pander to stupid people than smart people, so the right is easier to manipulate by politicians.

No! The left/center is full of people who can't even explain the reasons behind their political stances.

well...the same can be said for the right too. I've come to see how much belief plays a role in identifying with one side or the other. And we can't always explain why we believe what we do. It's not always just because we were told to believe certain things. And even if it is because of that, it had to resonate with you in some way in order to swallow it.

We can't all be self-reflexive about everything we believe.

Since both the far left and right are so polarized, the questions should be, is the center more intelligent than both the left and the right combined.

I'm a liberal and I have to say, I have known some pretty dumb liberals too.

Anyone who just takes the political affiliation of their parents and cant give any reasons for their beliefs is trouble.

An intelligent person, to me, is someone who is thoughtful and questions everything, while always keeping an open mind.

People who count themselves in a political affiliation like left/right are less intelligent than those who don't.

Re: Is the left/center more intelligent than the right?
lovely writing starting this off, thanks

it's like, there are masculine women, some more so than than some men, but on the average, women are more feminine. There are no genious right wingers, but there are some very intelligent ones. There are very few artist right wingers either, but it's possible.
They usually won't be intuitive people. They ponder stories, take on emotions and thoughts that move one to the next in a linear narrative. (You can always find a narrative in human lives even when there isn't one. That's what we do.) Modern so-called conservatives just don't see that their "logic" has led them down a narrow, disconnected road. Stupid lefties get in my way in the street with all their petitions and causes, but at least I know these kids aren't in it for the money.

No... but if they repeat it enough, it becomes the truth.

You are absolutely correct. This dumb farmer believes that neither the right nor the left have one grain of common sense, and to me common sense is a huge component of intelligence.
