The NASA mission to watch now regarding our magnetic field is THEMIS.
"What are the signs of spring? They are as familiar as a blooming daffodil, a songbird at dawn, a surprising shaft of warmth from the afternoon sun. And, oh yes, don’t forget the aurora borealis. Spring is aurora season. For reasons not fully understood by scientists, the weeks around the vernal equinox are prone to Northern Lights. Canadians walking their dogs after dinner, Scandinavians popping out to the sauna, Alaskan Huskies on the Iditarod trail -- all they have to do is look up and behold, green curtains of light dancing across the night sky. Spring has arrived!
This is a bit of a puzzle. Auroras are caused by solar activity, but the sun doesn’t know what season it is on Earth. So how could one season yield more auroras than another?
“There’s a great deal we don’t understand about auroras,” says UCLA space physicist Vassilis Angelopoulos. For instance, “Auroras sometimes erupt with little warning and surprising intensity. We call these events ‘sub-storms,' and they are a big mystery.” What triggers the eruptions? Where is sub-storm energy stored? (It has to gather somewhere waiting to power the outburst.)
And, of course, why springtime?
To answer these questions and others, NASA has deployed a fleet of five spacecraft named THEMIS (short for “Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms”) specially instrumented to study auroras. Angelopoulos is the mission’s principal investigator.
uroras are much more than just pretty lights in the sky. Underlying each display is a potent geomagnetic storm with possible side-effects ranging from satellite malfunctions in orbit to power outages on terra firma. Telecommunications, air traffic, power grids and GPS systems are all vulnerable. In a society that relies increasingly on space technology, understanding these storms is vital.
Launched in February 2007, THEMIS has already observed one geomagnetic storm with a total energy of five hundred thousand billion (5 x 10^14) Joules. “That's approximately equivalent to the energy of a magnitude 5.5 earthquake,” says Angelopoulos. “This storm moved twice as fast as anyone thought possible,” crossing an entire polar time zone in 60 seconds flat!
THEMIS may have found the storm’s power supply:
"The satellites have detected magnetic ‘ropes’ connecting Earth's upper atmosphere directly to the sun," says Dave Sibeck, project scientist for the mission at the Goddard Space Flight Center. "We believe that solar wind particles flow in along these ropes, providing energy for geomagnetic storms and auroras." Sibeck likens them to ropes because the magnetic fields in question are organized much like the twisted hemp of a mariner’s rope. Solar wind particles flow along the ropes in whirligig trajectories leading from the sun to Earth.
Which brings us back to spring.
It turns out that magnetic connections between the sun and Earth are favored in springtime. It’s a matter of geometry: As Earth goes around in its orbit, Earth’s magnetic poles wobble back and forth. (The poles don’t really wobble, but the combination of Earth’s 23-degree polar tilt plus orbital motion makes the poles seem wobble from the solar point of view.) Around the time of the equinox, Earth’s magnetic field is best oriented for “connecting-up” with the sun, opening the door for solar wind energy to flow in and spark Northern Lights.
But wait, there are two equinoxes, spring and fall, with similar magnetic geometry. Indeed, autumn is aurora season, too. Geomagnetic disturbances are almost twice as likely in spring-fall versus winter-summer, according to historical records.
THEMIS is just getting started. The five spacecraft are on a two-year mission to explore Earth’s magnetic field and they are only now settling into their optimum science orbits. “With five satellites, we can map the complex ebb and flow of energy during geomagnetic storms better than any single satellite ever could,” points out Angelopolous. “There’s no telling what we might learn.”"

Earth’s magnetic field acts as a shield against the bombardment of particles continuously streaming from the sun. Because the solar particles (ions and electrons) are electrically charged, they feel magnetic forces and most are deflected by our planet's magnetic field. However, our magnetic field is a leaky shield and the number of particles breaching this shield depends on the orientation of the sun’s magnetic field. It had been thought that when the sun’s magnetic field is aligned with that of the Earth, the door is shut and that few if any solar particles enter Earth’s magnetic shield. The door was thought to open up when the solar magnetic field direction points opposite to Earth’s field, leading to more solar particles inside the shield.
Surprisingly, recent observations by the THEMIS spacecraft fleet demonstrate that the opposite is true. "Twenty times more solar particles cross the Earth’s leaky magnetic shield when the sun’s magnetic field is aligned with that of the Earth compared to when the two magnetic fields are oppositely directed," said Marit Oieroset of the University of California, Berkeley, lead author of one of two papers on this research, published May 2008 in Geophysical Research Letters.
Researchers have long suspected that this "closed door" entry mechanism might exist, but didn’t know how important it was. "It's as if people knew there was a crack in a levy, but they did not know how much flooding it caused," said Oieroset.
Previous spacecraft could only sample a small part of this enormous layer of solar particles inside the Earth’s magnetic shield, but the five spacecraft in the THEMIS fleet spanned the entire rapidly-growing layer to give definitive measurements.
While the THEMIS researchers discovered the size of the leak, they didn't know its location(s). This was discovered by Wenhui Li of the University of New Hampshire, Durham, N.H., and his team. They used a computer simulation to discover where two holes frequently develop in Earth's magnetic field, one at high latitude over the Northern hemisphere, and one at high latitude over the Southern hemisphere. The holes form over the daylit side of Earth, on the side of the magnetic shield facing the sun.
The simulation also showed how the leaks develop. As solar particles flow out from the sun, they carry solar magnetic fields past our planet. Li's team realized that the solar magnetic field drapes against Earth's field as it passes by. Even though the two fields point in the same direction at equatorial latitudes, they point in opposite directions at high latitudes, When compression forces the opposite fields together, they link up with each other in a process called magnetic reconnection. This process tears the two holes in Earth's magnetic field and appends the section of the solar field between the two holes to Earth's field, carrying the solar particles on this section into the magnetosphere, according to Li's team. "We've found if the door is closed, the sun tears down a wall. The crack is huge – about four times wider than Earth and more then seven Earth diameters long," said Li, whose paper will be published in an upcoming article of the Journal of Geophysical Research.
Solar particles by themselves don't cause severe space weather, but they get energized when the solar magnetic field becomes oppositely-directed to Earth's and reconnects in a different way. The energized particles then cause magnetic storms that can overload power lines with excess current, causing widespread blackouts. The particles also can cause radiation storms that present hazards to spacecraft in high orbits and astronauts passing through the storms on the way to the moon or other destinations in the solar system. "The more particles, the more severe the storm," said Joachim "Jimmy" Raeder of the University of New Hampshire, a co-author of Li's paper. "If the solar field has been aligned with the Earth's for a while, we now know Earth's field is heavily loaded with solar particles and primed for a strong storm. This discovery gives us a basic predictive capability for the severity of solar storms, similar to a hurricane forecaster's realization that warmer oceans set the stage for more intense hurricanes. In fact, we expect stronger storms in the upcoming solar cycle. The sun's magnetic field changes direction every cycle, and due to its new orientation in the upcoming cycle, we expect the clouds of particles ejected from the sun will have a field which is at first aligned with Earth, then becomes opposite as the cloud passes by."

Right about now I wish some magnetics specialist would waltz in here and explain what is or could be making our field act the way it is, at least then we might have *some* idea of what is going on. I've seen our field develop that thick blue line extending away from the planet many times before.
Usually it happens before a CME or something, the 2 colours seem to switch places and wrap the earth up, with the thick blue line extending outwards, almost as if trying to ground itself (I'm assuming blue is negative and red is positive).

coherent changes of the solar wind parameters depending on the large-scale solar wind
structures can be used as a flexible tool to predict the flux enhancement of radiation
belt electrons during geomagnetic storms 1-3 days in advance.We report the averaged
variations of the solar wind parameters and radiation belt electrons during isolated geomagnetic
storms driven by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and corotating interaction regions (CIRs)
using a superposed epoch analysis centered on interplanetary shocks
and stream interfaces, respectively, whose arrival times can be used as a precursor for
the flux enhancement. A total of 49 CME- and 6 CIR-associated storms with Dst <
-100 nT are identified during solar cycle 23 from January 1996 to December 2004.
In CME-associated storms, the average flux recovers to the pre-storm level about two
days after a shock arrival. The occurrence probability of the >2 MeV electron flux
alert with >103 pfu at geosynchronous orbit is 14, 22, 41, and 43% in the 4 days after
the shock.
In CIR-associated storms, the average flux recovers to the pre-storm level
about one day after a stream interface arrival. The probability of an electron flux alert
is >80% one day after the stream interface arrival, and remains at that level for at least
the next four days.
We have had NO CME Activity noted ~ So that has to be ruled out
But just maybe this Last Coronal Hole on Friday the 13th Generated a CIR that is part of Solar Cycle 24 . If it does get classed and this has lasted over 5 days this would be noted as a rather long event , Given there were only 6 CIR events during Solar Cycle 23 from the time frame of January 1996 to December 2004 .It would be quite rare if that were the case.
Anyways off to do some more study time with this topic and a couple directions I would like to look into. Thanks in advance for everyone whom has put their ideas on the table. I will keep my mind open to the ideas and theories presented for making this a better thread.

It's not the data I'm interested in but the how these sorts of events affect us and the planet.
For example, our magnetic field is supposed to protect us from all the high energy particles that happen to come our way, right? So why on Earth does it also ALLOW these particles in, on a regular basis? It just doesn't make any sense. This process is called magnetic reconnection.
Magnetic Reconnection -The process which causes magnetic fields of opposite polarity to merge together, releasing magnetic energy. Commonly observed in solar flares, and in the magnetotail of Earth.
You can tell this is happening by the Aurora activity. Apparently there are 2 types;
Proton precipitation into the cusp after lobe reconnection at the magnetopause and emissions produced by electron acceleration after reconnection.
Polar Cusp Region -The region of the magnetosphere where the distortions caused by the solar wind create a funnel-like zone that reaches deep into Earth's polar magnetic field, allowing low-energy solar wind particles to reach the upper atmosphere.
So, now our shield has 2 ways in, for high energy particles and low.

The magnetic field do help a lot, look at all the marvelous biodiversity on the planet and what ncredible histories we are grasping from its past. It protects a lot... although everything is variable and everything has... limits.
Most likely... there are no contradictions at all, everything is related but we fail to notice some of the relationships.

I fail to see how that has anything to do with anything going on out in space... Unless you're somehow inferring that the Earth is growing like some living being, fed by the reconnections with the sun...? Which is uh.. no offense fairly crazy but would make great story material.
