yeah, and where is the "retired" option... I may not be employed...or even self employed...but I am working...at being self sufficient.

I'm out of work and homeless, but I get NO benefits from the government.

I will be looking for work starting Monday after returning to the US. Hopefully back in correctional nursing. Prison is a sure thing but would really like my job at the jail back as it is much closer to home. And the prison is waaaaayy harder work. lol But I enjoyed both of them to be honest.

disagree entirely. self-employed usually means 1) works very little or 2) works relentlessly, like 100 hours per week.

i hate when we are forced to language ourself into the dominant, corrupt, and stupid culture. work is not just being an american wage slave. it has many many many meanings, depending on the individual.

and self-employed encompasses quite a few of them.

I am unemployed and homeless. I was working full time for about eight months up until November, but I have been homeless since the Halloween before last. Before my last job, I was out of work for nine months.

I sometimes find some odd jobs stacking wood or doing snow removal.

Employed full-time, Verizon. Things are ok, Over time has been shut out. But, have a job and benefits and 2 boys to feed. And a wife to keep happy. Ok so far but cautious

except to pay taxes every now and then

don't pay SSI etc.
Will suffer upon retirement when Social Security gives them a far smaller check every month than those of us who honestly paid our deductions each week.

Well, the sad fact of the matter is that a lot of people just don't have that option. They may "know better" but when you and your kids are hungry TODAY, the future is just going to have to get put on hold. I've seen it a lot, in both cases. People who take their deduction through the year so their paychecks are a little bigger. And people who work off the books so they don't have to pay taxes at all.

I know one thing for certain, I would have taken a cash job in a heartbeat, if I could have found one, to keep from losing my apartment and moving into my car and a storage unit.

EDIT to add: But just to be clear, there are a lot of stupid people out there that don't have such good reasons as what I just posted here.
