Anonymous Coward User ID: 430328 Malaysia 07/18/2009 08:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm Malaysian. We don't talk or write like that. Quoting: TX PATRIOT 728483Greeting, RM Girl, out of simple curiosity, do you typically refer to yourself as being "Malay" or being "Malaysian"? . There are three major ethnic groups in this country, and those of Austronesian descent identify themselves as 'Malay'. Some Malaysians prefer to refer to themselves as belonging to a specific ethnic group. My mom is Japanese and my dad's ancestors are Dutch, so I usually just refer to myself as 'Malaysian'. |

I just spent three months touring Malaysia, and at every turn I was firmly corrected when I used the term "Malaysian". I honestly cannot remember one person who didn't state s/he was "Malay" or "Chinese Malay" etc. when asked, but I do understand the ethnicity differences. Thanks for the response, RMG. . |

He/she was trying to write in this thread as a non-native speaker, and got nailed. |

I've met some fellow Malaysians while I was living in Indy, and there were an alarming number of them who tried to pass themselves off as other nationalities. Their accent was a dead giveaway though. So did you enjoy your vacation here? :) |

It was not my first visit to Malaysia, but my first extended where I had time to learn about and enjoy the culture and landscape at my own pace. I absolutely loved the experiences. We started on Tioman, then to KL, Taman Negara, Cameron Highlands and then Perhentian Kecil. But more than the sights, I enjoyed the people. Your comments about nationality give me a chuckle. A couple of times I have been tempted to claim Canada. ;) But I have learned that most people do not identify an individual with - or personally hold one responsible for - the politics (or gov) of the one's home country. For that I am grateful. . |
