Greeting, RM Girl, out of simple curiosity, do you typically refer to yourself as being "Malay" or being "Malaysian"?

There are three major ethnic groups in this country, and those of Austronesian descent identify themselves as 'Malay'.

Some Malaysians prefer to refer to themselves as belonging to a specific ethnic group. My mom is Japanese and my dad's ancestors are Dutch, so I usually just refer to myself as 'Malaysian'.

Interesting. I just spent three months touring Malaysia, and at every turn I was firmly corrected when I used the term "Malaysian". I honestly cannot remember one person who didn't state s/he was "Malay" or "Chinese Malay" etc. when asked, but I do understand the ethnicity differences. Thanks for the response, RMG.

Well that's true, because Malaysians tend to identify more strongly with their ethnic group. Many of us aren't exactly proud of our nationality either. I've met some fellow Malaysians while I was living in Indy, and there were an alarming number of them who tried to pass themselves off as other nationalities. Their accent was a dead giveaway though.

Topi isn't a Malay name, though it really is a Malay word.
It actually means "hat" or "headgear".

Yes, thanks. It was not my first visit to Malaysia, but my first extended where I had time to learn about and enjoy the culture and landscape at my own pace. I absolutely loved the experiences. We started on Tioman, then to KL, Taman Negara, Cameron Highlands and then Perhentian Kecil. But more than the sights, I enjoyed the people.

Your comments about nationality give me a chuckle. A couple of times I have been tempted to claim Canada. ;) But I have learned that most people do not identify an individual with - or personally hold one responsible for - the politics (or gov) of the one's home country.

For that I am grateful.
