He said the last he heard they were working on an interactive "teaching program," which is the easiest type of conversant program to construct. I guess the goal is to be able to download a core data base of any discipline and it will "learn" how to teach an inquiring student based on the student's questions.
The program on this thread was evidently downloaded with some esoteric handbook on Egyptian hieroglyphics, from which, it is to teach. However, it's clearly only capable of restating the same information over and over in slightly different ways. Because it is not a human, it can not respond to questions that require explanation, purpose, relevance, relationship, equivalency, etc; it can only keep spitting out the same info programmed into it's core. However, the program reshuffles the info to make it generate the appearance of spontaneity, and of course they have added in some "quirkiness" to make it appear human in a sort of perverted way, which is kind of funny.
Also, the program is most likely connected to a web search engine like Google, and if pressed for an enquiry about "golf" for instance, it will pull some specifics about "golf" and mix it in with the core data.
The program they've got running here is something they're developing to respond to email communications only, unlike the program I had a chance to work with at Stanford last summer, which had an excellent voice synthesizer. Instead of responding with a lot of "regrind" (like this one does) when it got to something it did not know, it would say "I do not know." But it was hooked to the Wikipedia data base and it was truly stunning how well the program worked. You could talk to it and it would talk back just as quickly as a real person. |
