She returns for the morsels she's hidden, occasionally, sometimes I find them though. It probably means that you're overfeeding your dog. Quoting: j_stevens0nMy dog was the same. We lived in the country and this dog was a hell of a hunter. She loved banana muffins and would take a couple to hide, then eat a couple. And when she discided she had enough, she would refuse any more muffins. I think they do it to save for laters, LOL |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 599024I'd lean towards this one. My dog now is a "hand-me-down", once owned by a friend of the family, then my sister, now me. When my sister first got her, she was severely undernourished, and hid them all over the place (which isn't bad with milk-bones, but gets a little weird with bits of people food -- nothing like folding clothes and finding a washed bit of pizza). It took a long time to convince her that she wasn't going to starve, that it was okay to eat a treat, because there were more. Her original owner got her as a puppy, but didn't have any money, so the dog was hungry all the time. Now she's fine, and she still hides stuff once in a while, but it's a different deal. Today she'll hide things that she doesn't really like (french fries, breadsticks, etc.) but it's a pretty rare thing, mostly on days when she's had plenty to eat. They don't last more than a few hours, often she goes and munches them in the middle of the night. (I know, because she hops out of bed, goes and gets them, and comes back to eat them...chewing loudly while I groan and try and fall asleep again.) She might do it 2-3 times a month. To me it's almost more like she's practicing hiding food than actually storing it. So, IMO, if your dog's hiding a little food on occasion, that's pretty normal. If it's hiding a lot of food regularly, especially stuff that it likes, it's probably a sign something is wrong with the amount or type of food you're feeding it. Probably the amount of food. Most dogs will simply increase their energy output (drive you crazy wanting to play and running around the house like crazy) if they get more food than they need. Also, while burying food is common in the wild, most dogs tend to avoid storing food in the house, because they can't really hide the food that well, and their instinct seems to be "better eat it before somebody else does". My guess is that maybe you haven't kept the food bowl topped off in the past, and it might have gotten empty one too many times, so now the dog knows if it hides it's food and makes the dish look empty, you'll notice and fill it, then with the excess she hid, she'll get enough if you forget again. Perhaps her food bowl is too small? ~ ~ "He who does not understand your silence will probably not understand your words." ~Elbert Hubbard |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 600770Is my dog sensing some shortage of food soon and making the necessary preparations? [link to wiki.answers.com] Answer It's called "caching" (cashing). Foxes do it when they see a good opportunity to catch a meal, but they aren't hungry at the time, so they save it for later by burying the food underground so that other animals won't get it. Dogs don't have dirt to bury it under when inside the house, so they use blankets, rugs, toys, and anything else that is movable to cover it up. |
