[GOP Congressman]Broun: Stimulus package more effective as taxpayer rebates ($9K per taxpayer)
The Athens Banner-Herald ^ | January 27, 2009 | Blake Aued

Posted on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 6:39:50 PM by 2ndDivisionVet

U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Athens, wants to give about $9,000 to every taxpayer in the United States to stimulate the economy, he said today.

Broun has proposed spending President Barack Obama’s proposed $825 billion economic stimulus package on taxpayer rebates rather than a mix of spending and tax cuts.

“I urge President Obama and Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi to skip the pork wish list and work with my colleagues on a true economic recovery program that provides tax relief to small businesses and families and offers incentive-based relief for job creators,” Broun said in a news release.

Under Broun’s plan, every legal resident who filed a tax return in 2008 would receive a check for $8,895.75.

But one economist said stimulus checks like those Broun proposed are the worst way to bring the country out of its worst downturn in 70 years because consumers are likely to save the money rather than spend it.

Infrastructure spending, aid to states like Georgia that are facing budget crunches, and tax cuts to encourage productivity would all be more effective, said Jeff Humphreys, director of the University of Georgia’s Selig Center for Economic Growth.

If they want to stimulate the economy, they should give that money to everyone making less than a certain amount, say 15,000. Those people would spend the money for sure.

I for one could put it to very good use, but I just am not sure if it is right at all. This entire bail out scenario, while we are being 'told' it is needed, makes me very nervous.

Not quite, I meant isn't it wryly amusing, that a university of Georgia professor would claim that Barack Obama's economic cabinent was wrong about their assessment of the American economy and that the state of Georgia should be ear marked for additional funding.

Obama's pork barreling is evil, yet the professor's pork barreling is the solution to the economic woes being experienced by America.

You know, that is the immediate reaction from those of us who are in need. Which is my point, all of it sounds very 'taxing' (pun intended).

But, are we better off just saying "NO THANK YOU?"

~Galatians 4:16
Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

~“In the Communist world, we see failure, technological backwardness, declining standards of health, even want of the most basic kind -- too little food. Even today, the Soviet Union still cannot feed itself. . . . East and West do not distrust each other because we are armed; we are armed because we distrust each other. And our differences are not about weapons but about liberty. . . . The most fundamental distinction of all between East and West is that the totalitarian world produces backwardness because it does such violence to the spirit, thwarting the human impulse to create, to enjoy, to worship. The totalitarian world finds even symbols of love and of worship an affront.” Ronald Reagan

This is one way which will probably help usher in the mark of the beast. Like Nesara was proposing to eliminate past debt and start anew... with even some money ready in the account. All you have to do is get your remote control chip and the rest is yours.

The TARP ripoff that was pulled on the American taxpayers would of gone better if they had gone to everyone who has a mortgage, (income of 250k and down) and brought them up to date, then put them 2 years up.

This would of done several things, stopped all foreclosures immediately, give the owners a chance to breathe, save up, and look to refinance a fixed interest instead of those ARMs, etc. And the banks still would of gotten their money!!

As it is now, the banks took the money, don't want to lend a penny! (first hand experience, contractor here, had 2 customers with great credit told NO to new house loans) and the people are still being screwed.

SAVE? NOT fucking likely for most. It would be used to pay off existing debt, helping banks and such, but wouldn't help manufacturing much at all.

Anything left over would be spent at WalMart, helpin the Chinese economy!!

Here is another good idea. Rather than give banks billions that they don't lend out and use to buy corporate jets this person is proposing the government LOAN not give but LOAN $20,000 per employee to small businesses.

Jon Stewart (The Daily Show) was talking to Gwen Ifil. He suggested the gov give the taxpayers the money (versus the financial institutions) and that money is earmarked for people to pay mortgages and debts -- that way people pay off debt and the banks get the money. I like that idea. Economically, it doesn't create new spending per se, but if people are caught up, they may have more income to "new" spend to stimulate the economy. The idea of "bailing out the banks" doesn't help the average person, just the investors if they don't offer credit -- which they are not.

Eliminate Capital Gains Tax for 6 months and the economy will soar. Lower the rate business tax to be more competitive currently at 39% which is the 2nd highest in the world. Drop it to 29% and what the jobs soar!
