Jon Stewart (The Daily Show) was talking to Gwen Ifil. He suggested the gov give the taxpayers the money (versus the financial institutions) and that money is earmarked for people to pay mortgages and debts -- that way people pay off debt and the banks get the money. I like that idea. Economically, it doesn't create new spending per se, but if people are caught up, they may have more income to "new" spend to stimulate the economy. The idea of "bailing out the banks" doesn't help the average person, just the investors if they don't offer credit -- which they are not. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 478606I don't agree AT ALL with bailing out the banks. We (USA) are in a bad spot, but it just doesn't seem like anyone in DC is using 'common sense' to help get out of this mess. |

Paul Broun, R-Athens, wants to give about $9,000 to every taxpayer in the United States to stimulate the economy, he said today. Broun has proposed spending President Barack Obama’s proposed $825 billion economic stimulus package on taxpayer rebates rather than a mix of spending and tax cuts. “I urge President Obama and Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi to skip the pork wish list and work with my colleagues on a true economic recovery program that provides tax relief to small businesses and families and offers incentive-based relief for job creators,” Broun said in a news release. Under Broun’s plan, every legal resident who filed a tax return in 2008 would receive a check for $8,895.75. But one economist said stimulus checks like those Broun proposed are the worst way to bring the country out of its worst downturn in 70 years because consumers are likely to save the money rather than spend it. Infrastructure spending, aid to states like Georgia that are facing budget crunches, and tax cuts to encourage productivity would all be more effective, said Jeff Humphreys, director of the University of Georgia’s Selig Center for Economic Growth. It is a little to late for this. If they wanted to stimulate the economy they would of done it right with trillion dollars they used on tarp. The Gov. would of saved a ton if they would of bailed out working class families, ppl with incomes from 35k-85k combined. They could of paid off those mortgages and all of those ppl would of bought cars, boats and home improvement loans. No body spends money like blue collar workers with no debt. Of course there would of been rules, You would of had to have a home loan within your means and not living way beyond. And if you were able to make your payments on time then maybe you would of received a partial or something. The filthy rich would of been fine just like they are now, as well as the whit collar workers making 90k and up as long as they were smart. It would of helped a lot more then what they are doing now and would of been cheaper as well. |

I would hide it under my mattress for a rainy day. How can you stimulate the economy if there are no jobs and people are out of work . They will be buying the same stuff they did before such as heat, food, utilities. Do you think they are going to go out and buy items they can do without? That isn't going to boost the economy. In my state they are going to cut the program for medicine for the elderly. Oh that's going to save a lot of money people will get sick and have to go to the hospital because they have no meds and Medicare will have to pay the hospital bill anyway. |

I think putting the money in the hands of the people who would spend it is a great idea. The poor and the middle class (the bulk of America) would spend it why, because they have to, they need to, and they would create empty shelves and empty car lots that would need to be filled. Will it happen NO, Is this Congressman just 'grand standing' because he knows it will not happen Yes. |

Speaking for myself and living well below the gov't's poverty line perameters, I would put $15,000 or $10,000 or even $5,000 immediately into the economy. I did not receive the Bush rebate last year and again, if I had, I would have immediately gone out into the market and spent it. I think the American people are slowly, ever so slowly, catching onto how the gov't really works. All smoke and mirrors. No better example was the bank bail-out and the auto industry bail-out (and there will be more in this ultimate "good ol' boys club"). People, this is how Corporate Fascism works. The connection and inter-action between the gov't and the corporate world is seemless. They look out for each other and certainly not the ordinary man and woman in this society. My favorite scam is how the government gives the bogus "tax breaks". That is pure fluff, just like all of our supposed leaders. |
