Candles are cheaper then batteries.
Yep, and if properly utilized a candle provides light AND a little heat.
I bought a few new Christmas candles in December. They were scented pillar candles, and they weren't expensive. I decided to light one of them for the solstice, and I let it burn for 24 hours. I was frakkin' amazed by how little that candle burned down (less than 1 3/4 inches in 24 hours), so I decided to buy a few more if they were still available after Christmas.
They were, and I got them for HALF OFF. I cleaned out the shelf. They are stored in a cool, dark place, and they'll last for YEARS there...until needed.
Prepping doesn't have to be spendy.
