These proton storms are worrisome to me. Not only do they threaten to dose ISS astronauts, but the lil buggers accumulate in the "belts" and ping pong around for a long time. They don´t go away.

looking at the farside of the sun from the spaceweather.com site, looks like there is more coming around the bend, lots of activity ahead and the graph showing percentages is still 90% for M-Class and 30% for X-Class for the here and now

I like your old time way of putting things! Certainly gets the old spirit yahdeeing!! lol He certainly likes his whisky that old Zeus!!! There´ll be no wine left in the cellar soon! All that binge drinking!! He´s like the fat guy in the dinner queue, always pinching the dinner tickets off Mars! LOL

It should be an interesting show on Radio Orbit this weekend, they´ll certainly have enough things to talk about anyway! Hopefully he can explain the gravity of the protons and the effect on our solar system. We should focus some of our greymatter on it, that should dampen their party, not unless these light particles are needed for our evolutionary process!? Could the geometrical vortex on Jupiter or Saturn be affecting the sun? Like firing its mass out into quantum tunnels and into our star...lol

What makes you think you have to pledge your allegience to something to gain knowledge? When all the knowledge you need is inside you already! It just needs waking up! Sing the right songs in the melody of the universal balance, and you´ll gain all the knowledge that you wish to access. BIG BANG: Giant sunspot 720 erupted again today (Jan. 20th at 0700 GMT), unleashing a powerful X7-class solar flare. The blast hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space and sparked the strongest radiation storm since October 1989.

In this SOHO coronagraph image of today´s event, the many speckles are caused by solar protons peppering the spacecraft´s digital camera. These protons were accelerated to near-light speed by the X7-explosion. This is what we mean by "radiation storm."

Note: ISS astronauts are in no danger from the storm because they orbit Earth inside our planet´s protective magnetic field. Plus, the station itself is well shielded.
